Would your Swedish friends be willing to give up their citizenship to come to the US? I know some Danish people who came to the US but were unwilling to give up their citizenships.

I don't know those guys from Adam but they do have some pretty graphs.

Here's another one from The Economist Intelligence Unit. It scores Sweden pretty high ("full democracy"), including a civil liberties score of 9.41 (out of 10). The US is a "flawed democracy." We'd been recently downgraded because of the erosion of trust in government. Our civil liberty score is pretty good compared to the other dimensions scored, but it's still only 8.24.

The point being, regarding Sweden, that your idea that socialism leads to authoritarianism leads to censorship is some Red Scare bullshit that probably should have died with Joe McCarthy. Swedish socialism is nothing like the communism of the Soviet Union or the People's Republic of China.

 

I'm guessing everything you know about Sweeden you learned in 10 minutes from listening to Sean Hannity.

A thousand years before the concept of socialism was even invented, when the ancestors of moderm Swedes were pillaging mainland Europe, they never had American free speech.

The Scandinavian legal tradition, (which brings us concepts that we all know and love like jury trials) has always been one where the majority decides what is acceptable.

And historically, limitations on free speech have been about protecting conservative institutions, like the monarch, the nobility, and state religious institutions and authorities.

When you foolishly try and attribute that to socialism, you just prove how shallow and frivolous your knowledge of the world and its history is.

 

We should probably worry about the USA before we worry about Sweden, because we're further down the road than they are. We've built a system of mass incarceration of blacks, but we need to worry about the slippery slope of authoritarianism Sweden might be flirting with on twitter?

You seriously want to equate Sweden blocking hate speech on their twitter feed to the president of the United States getting accused of obstruction of justice and sharing sensitive intel with the Russians?

 

I've never said that. I responded to the other poster who asked me about Sweden because it was high on his list. I've never said the other poster's more positive experience about Sweden was not true.
