Yes, it's one-sided on the surface- you're talking about one of the most iconic, record-setting rock bands in history against a group that, while having a few hits in the 80s, lie in relative obscurity. And, although I love Floyd and admire their work, I give a slight edge to The Smithereens as far as a favorite. OK, my predictions for this poll are as follows: 1. My vote will be the only one for the 'Reens. 2. This thread will go off page 1 faster than Rasheed Wallace's career as an Atlanta Hawk; or 3. A bunch of clowns will come on here and vote for the Smithereens out of pure goofiness without probably even knowing any of their songs.
Umm... 1. Please read post 1. 2. Pink Floyd's music is just a bit too slow for me at times. I much prefer harder-rocking stuff. Not that I feel this way, but I know many people who feel P.F. is extremely boring and they'd much rather listen to Nirvana, Green Day, The Ramones, Black Sabbath, etc. 3. How would you rank The Beatles?
1. Ah. okay. Now read post #5 2. ok, but I'd think you'd compare one heavy-rock band with another. 3. Not a Beatles fan. Wouldn't rank them high. I like ~5 or 6 of their songs which is a pretty small percentage of their work.
Well, according to millions and millions of people, you'd be called an idiot with no musical taste whatsoever based on #3. And who says I can't compare two bands that are dissimilar? They both consist of a bass, drum, guitar, and keyboards set-up, right? They both have at least a few songs that display a similar style (Young Lust from P.F. and War For My Mind from T.S. are actually very similar). I did- and I'm to assume that because I prefer a not-as-popular band to a legendary one, that I'm on crack?? OK. Sorry. I forgot that what the masses consider great should be my primary criteria. Check.

Pink Floyd is my all-time favorite band, so for me it's not even close even though the Smiths has some good stuff.
Of course- my best friend's favorite band is Pink Floyd, and he'd laugh his a** off if I even dared ask him this question. And the thing is, I probably own more Pink Floyd CDs than some who voted for them- Piper, Obscured, Meddle, Atom Heart Mother, DSOTM, WYWH, Animals, Wall, Final Cut, even Ummagumma- got em all. Just goes to show how music's an opinion thing.
I like The Smithereens, but OP... you're basically throwing a bunny in a lion cage here. It's Floyd without a doubt. Without a doubt. Anyone who wants to question that, just listen to Dogs off of Animals. Or listen to The Wall in its entirety. Or Saucerful. Or Dark Side. Not to mention all of their other great albums like Piper, Meddle, Wish you were here... I mean, come ON. I'm not even quite sure where the musical comparison comes in here...
