i am a battier fan... and i am more than okay for trading gay for him ALONE. my issue is the same as others who have posted similar thoughts: WE GAVE UP WAY TOO MUCH FOR HIM.

unless the rockets have a KICK ASS offseason, this trade single handedly shows hows r****ded CD and JVG and les really are. and now morey is supposed to take over?? yeah right... :(

but battier will be awesome i think! i have always liked him. he is as smart as they get on-court and i think he will fit our team perfectly. now who will play PF? (not that we didn't already have this problem... but it seems we could've gotten more with the talent we've had)

if we sign mike james and get another PF, we will be good. any ideas as to what PF options are out there? and can we afford it? how do we put together a team now? someone tell us!

As of now, the way I see it, we simply traded Swift for Battier. This might be an upgrade in itself, although we take on a longer contract.

But, in the process of the trade, we just gave away a #8 pick with an incredible upside. That is what is so unforgiveable.

crap. i was in favor of this trade, now I'm trying not to think about it. To everyone, stop hypothesizing about whether we'd be better off with Gay than Battier if Tmac goes down. If he goes down, we suck and he will be the Grant Hill contract that anchors this franchise.

    Specific questions to Memphis X:

Can Battier do a competent defensive job on Jerry Stackhouse? How about Josh Howard? (IMO, we are one decent, long defender short of giving Dallas a hard time (assuming of course that we sign a decent guard, like Mike James)

Can Battier do a competent job on Manu Ginobli? (I suspect the answer is no, but want to ask. Ginobli isn't a speed merchant as much as he is crafty and strong.)

Can Battier stay in front of Boris Diaw? Tim Thomas? Shawn Marion?

Thanks for the insight. And people, please treat MemX with some respect. He is a welcomed guest around here.

MemX - one last question. What's your feel on whether Swift is negative trade value? I suspect he is but don't know the feeling in Memphis.

Yeah Battier is not a 4 he is more a 3/2 and his defence is probably better than anyone we have and dont forget that he averaged 1 block ans 1 steal per game

While I wish we could have kept Gay, I'm glad to have Battier. He was on my Yahoo! fantasy team (I won first in my league) and he's a good source of blocks & steals. Plus, his shooting percentage is'nt so bad either. He'll be a solid contributor beside #11 & #1.

Stealing our football team, taking the hometown QB hero that should have been ours, stealing Rudy Gay in return for a mediocre player. Why does it seem like Tennessee always plays a role in screwing us? I ****ing hate them.

Here I was thinking JVG and Mike Fratelo were friends. Firts Stro now this? At least Fratelo could have given his "friend" a heads up on both players.

Now I am confused for real.

Boris Diaw did not play the 4 for Atlanta either - this is the new wave of the NBA and dmanit Shane will be our startiong 4 and shift to the 3 when Mac sits for a short break.

We will use the fronting defense against teams with elite PF.

Boris Diaw did it - and he is not even that good of a defender.

This is the new movement and this is the kind of new wave PF JVG has been hinting about. I think our offense will greatly improve because of this.

So for now (baring any trades or FA signings)...our starting five will be like this...

    1. Alston - PG
    2. Bogans - SG
    3. Mac - SF
    4. Battier - CoF (combo forward)
    5. Yao. - C

If this starting lineup stays healthy and together for at least 70 games, we should be able to win 50 games.

    How do you mean?

Phoenix did it? We have to start being positive about this because there is almost nothing we can do now.

I really like that lineup - I think Shane can give us close to 18 PPG by just spacing the floor and huscle points. He can also grab 5-7 rebounds which is about what Juwan gave us. He could not possibly be worse than Juwan on defense.

If you really think about it - it is not as bad.

My only concern is how it will affect Yao - since Yao has limited lateral movement.

    Are you nuts?
Diaw is a big time athlete. Battier is not.
Do you want to have the PF of the Rockets to be a 5 rebound per game guy?
Battier averaged 35 minutes and averaged 5 rebounds a game.
Unless we're trying to lose (maybe we are after this trade) he's not going to be playing significant minutes at the 4 let alone starting.

Being a Rox fan must be too hard for you. :p

Relax, go to bed. Have a sweet dream. Rox can even win 60 games with that lineup.

    In your dream of course.

Ugh. Doug Christie 1.5 is a very good comparison.

I like your attempt at being positive. The odds are against Battier being more productive. I predict Battier will remain a 10/5 player with the Rockets at best. I've looked at the PER stats for the Rockets who came into JVG's system. Mostly they have gone down. There has been only one that has gone up. Guess who - Mike James. And we've seen what happened to him.

Best player in the draft? Please. Gay fell down the draftboard for a reason. Your delusion speaks to a fan whose team has never won a single playoff game. Suck on *that.*

He was in the the top 2 on the draft board of Collangelo and West. That's saying something. Not being at the top of Billy Knight, Michael Jordan/Bickerstaff, McHale or Steve Patterson's draft board isn't a negative.

    Anyway ...

Bringing up the Grizz's playoff futility (0-12) while supporting this crappy trade doesn't speak well of Shane's ability to have an impact.

    I still love it. :D

In 1999 we traded Brent Price, Antoine Carr, Michael Dickerson, Othello Harrington, and a future 1st round pick for Steve Francis (who was named rookie of the year) and Tony Massenburg.

Needless to say that Steve Francis helped us to land TMac. And to this day, Grizzlies' are still searching their super stud. Unless Gay is proven to be the best player in this draft, don't use this line again.
