and dont get me wrong, family guy can be pretty funny... but if you can watch seasons 3-9 of the simpsons and still think that family guy is a. funnier b. more clever you're an idiot, and deserve to be called as such. hell, just watch the south park episode that discusses family guy... they nail it on the head. anyone can just come up with a bunch of random allusions and call them "jokes." (south park is infintely more funny and clever than family guy as well).
OK, I think I have caught it once or twice on Cartoon Network. It was around that time that I decided that Cartoon Network had gone to crap. I like Simpsons, but the supporting cast on Family Guy is just funnier to me. (Keep in mind, I haven't watched either in several years.)
yea...it wasn't a knock. i just consider that show the same kind've humor as family guy only to the extreme. the jokes in family guy are rarely plot driven...it's out of left field and completely random. SWTsig...yea South Park did nail them. for the record I think all 3 are hilarious. I was thinking about trying my hand at cartoons before the burdens of responsibility shackled me down...
Even though I agree The Simpsons has dropped off in recent years, (I guess most stuff post-'99) it's still my favorite and yes, there's better plots. Family Guy was always alright to me but I always thought it had too much of the same jokes, and was a childish rip off of Simpsons.
The early seasons of the Simpson's constitute some of the most genius comedy put to screen. Especially around seasons 3-6, which is when I feel the show was at it's absolute best. The writing staff was great and featured a young Conan O'Brien to boot. One thing that makes those seasons so appealing to me is that Homer had not been transformed into a total boob. I mean, he was a boob in those episodes, but he had emotional layering that allowed us to see that he meant well in spite of it all. Try to recall the flashback episodes, such as when Marge is pregnant with Bart. Homer comes across as a genuinely good guy in spite of his buffoonery. The Simpsons has lost this recently as Homer, and all of the characters it seems, have been emotionally pegged. Family Guy can be funny, but it lacks the charm of the Simpsons in every way. The humor is always out of left field (I laughed when Lois and Peter were doing role play and Lois was the "Sexy Grimace," but it made no sense), to a fault.
Classic Simpsons was great. The stuff they've made in the last decade is not very good. I can't make myself watch more than a couple of minutes of Family Guy so I don't know if it is funny; I find it very unappealing.
Family Guy sucks. A lot of bad pop cultural references with the "Do you remember that time....?" When it's not that its basically taking any opportunity to take a big dump on Meg. Didn't Seth MacFarlane stop writing scripts for the show years ago? I look at it more like those comedians that rely too heavily on shock humor. Then again I don't understand why people say South Park is genius either. Simpsons was good the first few seasons but again it became too dependent on celebrity guest appearances, and it too turned into more of shock comedy than before. I can at least let that slide because it took a good number of seasons before the quality of the show started to deteriorate. It took one cancellation of Family Guy for it to turn into what it is now, and really if it wasn't canceled I don't think it would have had the cult following it did in the first place. Maybe I'm just getting old.
For the record, I'm a big fan of both shows. The Simpsons obviously has always been my favorite show. The Simpsons was a fine steak dinner with all the trimmings, creamed spinach, dinner salad, and a nice creme brulee to top it off. Family Guy is just the steak with a whole lot of sauce. Read: The Simpsons incorporated jokes into the story-lines of the characters and pioneered a lot of off-color humor, The Simpsons was truly revolutionary. There were right-wing Christians who thought the show was utterly vulgar and straight from Satan. Yes. The Simpsons. And this was only because they said stuff like "damn, fart, ass" and portrayed the characters just like any other ones on the sitcoms that were running at the same time. The amazing thing was early on the show was remarkably tame compared to today's standards, but it was shocking to even see cartoon characters in a bar downing beers, ogling strippers, or showing their bare asses. The Simpsons paved the way for Southpark, King of the Hill, FG, and so on. These shows would not exist if it was not for The Simpsons. Family Guy for the most part went straight for the shock value, gross-out, pop culture references to get the laughs. The thing is, it works. It works because the characters are genuinely funny. Quagmire is funny, Adam West is hilarious. Joe, Cleveland, it goes on and on. FG has no trouble beating a dead horse to death over and over again with Herbert the Pervert jokes and Peter vs Chicken fights. Lets examine the similarities in the household... Father : Below Average IQ, Overweight, Completely inconsiderate of family's feelings for the most part, beer-guzzling blue-collar worker. Mother : Obviously out of her husband's league. Most of the guys in town want to get with her. Extremely annoying voice. unusual hair color. Constantly trying to be the voice of reason in the household. Kids : 2 older siblings close in age and then a baby. You can't say that Family Guy wasn't directly influenced by The Simpsons. I think Southpark said it best when they had the "Simpsons already did it" episode. The Simpsons have been around so long that they have even had episodes that were similar to other episodes. So can you really say Family Guy is "funnier" than the Simpsons? If you're talking about ha-ha funny, then I'd probably have to say yes... but is it a better show? God no, Nothing FG has done has come close to matching some of the screenwriting from The Simpsons heydey (Seasons 3-9) In conclusion, lets just enjoy the shows for what they were and stop trying to argue which one is "better" or "funnier" thank you.
This basically sums up my sentiments on the matter. The characters on the Simpsons, especially Homer, have lost much of their depth in recent years, which is really a shame. Family Guy never had that depth. What you see is what you get, and you get it over and over and over and over...
Nothing beats Simpsons in its prime. And I think it will remain that way too, because shows today are so shallow it's depressing.
I always liked 'Dinosaurs', the original Simpsons rip off. I have watched bits and pieces of Family Guy, can't seem to ever get into it. King of the Hill I really enjoy - but no one I know seems to agree.
+ a million there shouldnt even be any further discussion, no one will say it better. [/thread] lets enjoy the ha in both shows as long as they are still running....its only a matter of time before they get replaced with more stupidass reality shows.
IMO, the simpsons haven't been funny for about 8 years while the Family Guy is a lot wittier than the simpsons. Family guy is better.
Like others have said... Simpsons = Michael Jordan Family Guy = Kobe Bryant Did Michael Jordan have a better career? Absolutely...but now he's old and nowhere close to what he used to be.
oh and i find South Park to be a lot wittier than FG but they are all great great cartoons but if i may say BRING BACK FUTURAMA FOR GOOD!!!!!!!
