Because it is interesting to discuss.

Discussion, even if it reeks of braggadocio = fine.

Chant at a game = lame.

SEC University didn't win, the University of Alabama did. That's why "Big 12/Ten" is not chanted when the Jayhawks, Longhorns, Aggies etc win a game (unless it is in a mocking/sarcastic manner).

Why would I want to prove my conference is best? I hate all the other teams, yet arguing my conference is arguing why I think all those teams are so great. Why would you do that?

When your team just proved it was the best - why celebrate the conference? It sounds like a Marxist redistribution of chants.

First of all, I think you can throw pro sports out entirely for this conversation. Pro is just different from college. I have traveled to opposing SEC universities and tailgated with some of their students and alums. That's just a whole different feeling than going to an away pro game. Pro vs. college is also different because of the nature of how you become affiliated with your team, as well as the way the championship is decided.

I referenced traveling to opposing stadiums, and in that same vein, "southern hospitality" is a factor. Every place I've gone, some fans have been rowdy, but overall I've been blown away from the hospitality of opposing fans/alums. They'll invite you over, crack open a beer for you, offer up some of their bbq, jambalaya, etc, and ask you how your drive was. They give you a reason to respect them and to get behind them.

Also, regarding respect, I think it helps that from top to bottom, the level of play in the SEC doesn't deviate too substantially compared to some other conferences. You build respect for each other because every team in the SEC plays each other hard and almost no game is guaranteed (I hold my breath every time my team plays Vandy, Miss State, or Ole Miss because they always give us tough games). Almost every SEC team has had some level of success, so the historical respect is there and there aren't many superiority/inferiority complexes amongst teams.

Geography plays a factor, in a couple ways actually. One isn't really a direct factor, but I think it is a differentiating factor between pro vs. college. In the SEC, all the teams are grouped together in the SE states, whereas in pro, you can have teams in totally different geographic areas be in the same division. The direct way geography plays a factor, as stupid as it is, is because there still some latent civil war mentality of backing your southern "brother in arms." You may have your quarrels with your neighbor, but you back him when someone goes against him.

Most obviously it comes down to the way the college football champion is decided. In the pro, it is always to your benefit to have the other teams in your division lose. Strength of schedule doesn't matter and you get playoff berths depending solely on record. In college, if other members in your conference are highly ranked and good beat non-conference opponents, it is actually better for your team. The increased public and media perception can lead to your team getting the benefit of the doubt (in preseason rankings and in being voted into the championship game). Does LSU get into the championship in 2007 without the SEC's reputation? Probably not. UF in '06 and '08? Maybe, maybe not. SEC teams have made some big statements the past four years in championship games and it has definitely helped them.

Lastly, once the SEC has gained public and media perception as being the best conference, its conference members want that reputation to continue. SEC teams have seen the benefits it has reaped, and that want to maintain it.

Thanks. It just seems that for some reason, SEC fans somehow think of the SEC as a community. Something other college fans don't(i.e. UT fans don't particulary care about other Big 12 schools because they're Big 12 schools). Not saying it's either right or wrong, but definitely something that stands out.

Can't really remember. Haven't driven in years. But I seemed to remember 6 hours from Sugarland to near Dallas downtown on I45.

Is it suppose to be shorter or longer than that?

I just found this quote on another website that more eloquently states the southern pride/civil war mentality part of the equation:

The SEC as a whole functions as a confederacy of sorts. We fight amongst one another and resent one another, just as the original confederate states did amongst themselves, but more often than not we will pull for one another when facing an outsider to where chants of "SEC! SEC!" have replaced the old slogan of "The South Will Rise Again" as a testament of regional pride.

We generally make it in less than 4 hours from I-45/N. Shepherd.

Was it the only Bama chant? No. They even modified a Gator chant, awkwardly I might add as the syllable count didn't match. Is adding another chant and taking pride in surviving the best conference and representing it is so reprehensible? They can chant the name of their local restaurant they ate breakfast ate every morning if they wanted to, I'm not going to cry about it.

And I don't know what Richard Marx has to do with it, but I will be right here waiting for you to overcome this odd fascination.
