I love the way they have "Animals Have Rights" plastered over their, um, chest. One of the reasons I love the Rockets.

I'd like to think they're mutually exclusive. A fine woman... a fine basketball game...

...now if you could get a fine woman at a fine basketball game, that would just rock!

Gotta agree - their most impressive talents seem to be changing their outfits.

I (and my wife) really expected a better show from them when we saw them in person - there are hundreds of high school cheerleading teams that are much better than them. What they need is better pay (to attract more talent), better benefits (they don't even get much in the way of free tickets for friends), and a good coach/choreographer.

Just be glad that the rest of the Rocket's organization isn't run as half-heartedly as the promotions department.

I think you're being too harsh Ali Cat. I'm no dance critic but the routines the powerdancers do seem to be pretty pro looking - they are in time most of the time and appear well choreographed.

Obviously no-one goes to a game to see the powerdancers, heck, I get more entertainment out of the guy who does tumble runs in the 4th quarter, but Puedlfor is right - they are a welcome diversion during timeouts etc.

Consider this - the Powerdancers probably spend more time practicing together during the season than the players, and I'm being serious. I just read an article in SI saying that NBA dancers get paid squat (The Laker Girls get like $50 a game, so you can bet the Powerdancers don't get any more).

They are athletes and fans, which makes them twice what we are. And twice what the Rockets are. Give the women some respect.

perhaps we should ask... would you still go to the game/ watch it on the tube if there was no cheesy exploitation, errr, power dancers to be had, and you instead used time-outs to visit the loo or to grab another pop?
this is not about your sexual appetites, guys... it's about THE SPORT. PERIOD.

Payaso: But they hardly ever show the power dancers on TV...during time outs they mostly show commercials. I personally would rather be assualted with "cheescake and jiggle" than marketing ploys. As far as when I attend games...I usually do visit the "loo" or grab a barley "pop" rather than watch the dancers. But I certainly do not think they detract from the sport...nor are they being exploited. Those girls want to dance...and they do so more for their own reasons than for money or fame. I knew a girl who was a power dancer several years back...and she was a schoolteacher by day. Being a dancer doesnt even pay as well as being an educator. She did it because she was a fan...and liked to dance. What else are all the high school and college cheerleaders and drill team dancers gonna do when they grow up? Some people are easily offended...if your sig. other is offended by the human form...I would say she is one of those people. You cant please everybody...but if you promise not to look...maybe the she will ease up a bit and let you watch sports anyways. Just beware of the XFL..haha.

Rollin- w/o revealing too terribly much about what I'm about, I can tell you this much- my s.o. feels it personally b/c being a person who (and this sounds so cliche', but it's true) was all about emphasizing her mind over her considerable physical attributes when she was younger. She's not the type to get jealous or catty of the cheesecake crew; hers is the kind of physique that could get hurt doing those kind of moves. (ladies out there who are bigger than a 34A-B will concur with that [IMG]) She liked to party and have fun when the party was on Westheimer and the stories she could tell about pig mo-fos driving around and making lewd suggestions to her as she was just walking along minding her own business are pretty sordid, at best. It was assumed that just because of the way she was built, she must be highly promiscuous- even her own mother accused her of that. (she was chaste) That tends to color your opinion of men and how they operate, and how the popular culture is a permissive attitude towards lewd behavior. Her own draconian approach to sex in sports, or sex/titillation in TV entertainment where I'm personally concerned, is my cross to bear; but I agree with her on the role it has played in spectator sports. The power dancers are all about appealing to the basest, lowest common denominator in men and are, therefore, an affront to both women and men of reflective thought.
Regarding the tradition of cheerleaders at every level of spectator sport- it seems to me that it had its origins in the pre-Title IX days, when there was no mandated equality in interscholastic sports funding... I draw the parallel to the days when all the boys took shop, and all the girls took home-ec in high school. Girls couldn't put on pads and expect to compete on par with adolescent males, but they could put on short skirts and shake pom-poms on the sideline. It's a relic from a sexist era. I realize I could easily ramble on ad nauseum on the subject (issues like basic modesty and transcending the cultural LCD) but the plain truth of the matter is... you could do well without it.

I never played sports, but I am in good shape, and I've never had a problem with the ladies, or any of the other issues which are stereotypically associated with "being in the band."

The point I'm making is that dancing, cheering and playing music takes as much talent as being on the field with the "jocks." Should gymnastics have the same label you are giving to cheerleaders/dancers? After all, gymnastics is full of girls in tight (and sometimes skimpy) clothing with great bodies.

Points well taken. I totally understand her point of view. It must have been hard for her being so attractive...and feeling ashamed of it. The men making rude comments were out of line. But tell me...was she dancing around suggestively in a skimpy outfit on Westhiemer? My guess is no...but those men were rude anyways. Nothing would have changed that. The thing I have trouble understanding is why anyone would object to someone utilizing their talents in the way they see fit. Maybe the power dancers are all very intelligent women (notice I say maybe) that also like to dance and look good to themselves and to the men and women in the audience while they dance. I do not see why anyone would be offended. It is not like they are topless or nude like their Mens Club counterparts. I have a tendancy to believe that their dancing would be alot worse if they were to wear heavy, restrictive garments that provided enough coverage to make EVERYONE happy. By that same argument, you could say that the Rockets themselves are guilty...because they wear shorts and sleeveless unis...that are sure to excite some of the female fans. Perhaps we should make them wear the warm up sweats throughout the game to prevent this? I have heard females comment on the tight pants that football players wear. Are the tight pants utilized to appeal to a female audience? Is that a double standard? I do not see what is wrong with being intelligent, talented AND attractive. I do not see what is wrong with women and men participating in different activities according to their individual talents. Like I said, I can do with or without the dancers...but I do not think the world (including the rude guys on Westheimer) or myself would change if they are gone.

lynus, i think i will have to disagree with you. i was in both band (percussion) and sports (football, basketball, track). and if i had to compare them it takes alot more to be in sports than in band. no disrespect towards former band members, and present band members.

The number of athletes who go pro (and stay pro) compared to the number of musicians (or dancers) who go pro and are successful is probably just about equal. A greater number of successful musicians exist due to the fact that musicians usually don't suffer from career-ending injuries like a torn ACL. Dancers DO have to worry about such things, though.

There are plenty of differences for various types of talent, and many degrees of each. One does not necessarily take more than another.

I don't want to get into what constitutes a "great" athlete vs. a "great" musician vs. a "great" dancer, etc. Of course the numbers get smaller for each level of "greatness." But I think there will always a last-chair instrumentalist for every guy who rides the pine, and a popular local musician for every guy in the CBA, a "One-Hit Wonder" for every Ralph Sampson, and a Stevie Ray Vaughn for every Hakeem Olajuwon.

Ali Cat, you don't really understand men do you? We like to look at pretty women. Is there anything wrong with that? Aren't you flattered when(if) you see that a guy is attracted to you?

i dont know about professional sports vs. professional musicians. but in my opinion (having done both) high school football/basketball is alot harder than band. especially football and especially "texas football". "two a days" at the end of summer was one of the hardest things i've ever done in my life and thats not even with pads.
