Mack, I think there's one or two things happening with the trade exception. 1) It's been offered to a team to acquire a player - like Daniels for instance - and the Rockets are waiting for the team to accept OR 2) They have one or a couple of mediocre deals on the table from another team, and have decided to wait to see if any better deals come about before accepting the mediocre one thats already on the table.
Agreed Jerry, I don't think anyone on the Rockets or on this board wants a bunch of scrubs. But, you also don't want to be handcuffed into a bad deal that prevents you from being flexible in the future, And just because, as you later put it, the Rockets "are known for getting scrubs" doesn't mean you have to rush into a bad deal. They are different issues. One thing you can't critisize the Rockets for is the willingness to "strike a deal, as it seems you are now doing. But, your angst is understandable. Peace.
Yeah, I think what you want to do (barring injuries) is sign the 2 max players to long-term deals and surround them with short term contracted role players. Well, I'd give 'em a long term deal if it was fair and they were a good fit within the team. But if a guy is not happy with his role on the team, I think it's best for team and player to have the flexibility to make a change.
I think The Rox management's patience is a good thing. We already have the 2 biggest pieces of the puzzle set, we don't need to go out like everybody else that throwing big money to players just because there's not too many quality free agents available. IMHO, I think we'll probably be OK without addition of a guard, but we have to get a backup center or another big man. Our bench is so thin it's going to be tough if any one is injured.
Actually spurs were always very good about going under cap for most seasons. Remember them letting Stephen Jackson go this year instead of overpaying, or the Hedo go instead of overpaying. If you are talking about the Mavs or Sac, see overpaying gets you max two good seasons and now both team are in very hard pressed postions. It seemed that both of these teams are on the decline and will continue to be on the decline the next 2 seasons. Lakers, with the exception of Devean George don't overpay. Minnesota are in the same postion SAC was in the year they lost to the Lakers in WC, if they don't make a move this year, they will be on the decline the next few years.
And one last thing, I've posted this in another thread but here it is again. We go into every season feeling like we are either better than last year or can still be a contendor on the team, that's why I look at the OVERALL track record of the Rox and I'm very content.
Spurs Jeopardy! Malik Rose Manu Ginnobli Rasho Nesterovich Who are the three players whose contracts the Spurs will regret sooner rather than later?

Very good post. You have to give the Rockets an A for trying. They had a couple of bad contracts, Maloney and Moochie were the worst. The big move for EG has turned out badly. Overall they aren't afraid to make the big splash and are not content with middle of the pack.
