I'd suggest this is no surprise at all to Morey.

There's a reason he went out and brought in veterans on the minimum instead of D-League 'potential talents' for those roster spots.

I still feel like we're not excited enough about Terrence Jones. To me he is the most important development this season. At 22 and seeing his first real minutes as an NBA starter this season I can't be more excited with his production. It only gets better from here folks (if we could keep people healthy).

Just to add a little bit more on your perspective, the Rockets are the 7th youngest team in the league. The rest of the younger teams are under .500 and struggling.

This. Mchale has somewhat done a decent job of developing these players, but definitely not a championship-level coach.

Exactly! I really feel like the team would be playing much more consistently like what we saw against Portland with a coach that held them accountable. The effort level varies so wildly from game to game, with either Lin or Bev in the starting lineup. It just seems that some games they 'check out'. This is the coach's job. Players are accountable, yes, but a great coach would not let a young team like this skate for more than a couple minutes before reaming them out.

Are there any championship level coaches before they won their championships?

this is a trick question but I think there are top tier coaches who are able to lift performances of their teams by a large margin. (Pop, PJax....)

Very good young coaches (Vogel, Thibs, Brooks)
    Veterans (Vangundy bros, carlisle,hollins, carl)

and there are coaches who just happens to have the best talent on the court
    (Spoelstra, Brooks)

Well, Pop and Phil are not available. Thibs and Vogel's ceilings were EC finals in a conference that perennially sucks. And people would laugh at you if you thought Carlisle was a championship level coach before 2011. Most media guys had the Mavs losing to Portland that year.

Considering they made the second round of the playoffs last year and won 2 games against San Antonio.

They lost a couple key bench players but gained Iguodala. They have some experience.

I say that most forget this is real life and it takes two or more teams to tango. This is NOT a video game where DM can simply force trades out of thin air.

Larry Brown before he stole Rick Carlisle's team. Rick Carlisle before Larry Brown stole his team. Arguably SVG & Rick Adelman.

On what planet does a package involving promising young talent like Jones and Lin constitute as "thin air"?

I think McHale is capable of leading a team to a championship. I don't see any major flaws to what he is doing. It's easy to question decisions when they don't work out, and to some degree he is experimenting. A manager for a baseball team is going to make moves that don't always work out but that isn't what makes them a great manager.

What makes a coach great is his ability to get his players on the same page and to play as a cohesive unit on both ends of the floor. Given how young and inexperienced this team is, you have to measure McHale by the improvement the team is making in this area - which isn't measured game to game but rather month-to-month. I do see improvement in this team since Nov. So I have to disagree with the assertion that he isn't a championship level coach.

He might be. It's just too early to tell.
