"You have two players sharing the same backcourt that can take any defender off the dribble." This could be the reason why Webber WOULDN'T want to come to Houston... Let's face it, Mobley gets 90% of his shots in iso... You think that Webber wants to stand on the other half of the court to watch Mobes do his thing? Doubtful... Also, if Webber does come here and we do go back to the old style of dumping it down low, how would Mobley respond? I don't see Mobley earning his stripes by firing open 3's all night... What we would need to do is get some MOTION into our offense... Imagine that, one guy dribbling with four guys moving around the court... Rudy T might think he'd be inventing the wheel, but he wouldn;t be... If we keep our same iso offense, acquiring Webber will be just like the Pippen deal... The only way he would fit in is his ability to run the floor... But, he wouldn't be able to do that if he's the only one rebounding... Just some food for thought... ------------------ Check out my homepage! Loads of sports pics! http://www.public.asu.edu/~sykim/
I somehow think if we got the probable MVP of the NBA that we would change up the offense to suit his game. Don't think that'll be a big problem. ------------------ President of the Jason Collier and Mo Taylor fan club! Draftsource.net ClutchTown.com
I think Webber would fit right into the current system. Just substitute Mo with Chris. When Mo isn't in fould trouble, Rudy does some pretty creative things for him to accentuate his strengths. I am sure he'd do the same for Chris. I don't think Rudy can every go to the old dump it in style because that would nullify much of what Steve and Cuttino bring to the table. ------------------
Really? Ever since Rudy has been around, we've had some type of ISO... If we ISO Webber, that makes Mobley and Francis obsolete if they are standing behind the 3 pt line... If you think that Rudy is an offensive genius then your fooling yourself... Rudy refused to change things for Pippen, what makes you think he will be able to adapt his offense to get the most out of Webber? All you can say is that you can hope he does that, but Rudy's past history has proven that he is stubborn when it comes to changing philosophies... And don't tell me about how he has changed our offense so much from the 90's... We still have ISO that freezes out 4 players... Also, who wouldn't scrap the dump the ball down low offense when your top inside threat is Mo Taylor? Rudy is an overrated coach... He is a good coach, but not the great one everyone perceives him to be... For instance, the Rockets still don't know how to defend a pick and roll... You would think that a great coach like Rudy would know how to somehow contain it... Rudy's best assets are the fact that players want to play for him because he gives them free will on the court... ------------------ Check out my homepage! kidrock, I think you're being unfair to Rudy. The Pippen experiment failed b/c Pippen was so quick to step into the shadows... he recognized that Charles was a much better player than he was, so he laid off. Charles and Rudy both said that Scottie had tons of opportunities that he never took advantage of. You can put the guy in your lineup, but you can't make him drink... or something like that. ------------------ We're going to stay together until something happens, if something happens. - Sidney Lowe on Shareef's career in Vancouver.
"Charles and Rudy both said that Scottie had tons of opportunities that he never took advantage of." Of course they are going to say that! You think Rudy will say that his offense doesn't work? You think Barkley will defend Scottie after he dissed him? If this was the case, then why was Scottie unhappy? Why did Scottie go to Por, a team with more talent? ------------------ Check out my homepage! Loads of sports pics! http://www.public.asu.edu/~sykim/
So let me get this straight Genius, Rudy runs ISOs most of the time that freeze out 4 of the 5 players on offense, but the players love playing for him cause he give them free will on the court.....to what .......stand around?????? Sounds like a contradiction to me Which one is it either ****ty ISOs that only involve one player (perhaps you should do a count on percentages of offenses that are isos) Or The players love the coach cause he lets them play loose unchecked offense. Or Is it you don't know anything but Criticising ------------------ CUT Tino These Heaves are just getting Ridiculous!
When I mean players like playing for him, I'm talking about the star players... Such as Barkley, Pippen (around the time we signed him), Mo Taylor, Anderson... He is an attraction to star players and would-be FA's becuase they know that they get to have an ISO... Whenever we acquire a decent FA, they always talk about how they want to play for Rudy... Then when they come here, they end up being disappointed... Ala Pippen, and pretty soon Olajuwon, Anderson and Taylor... What I'm saying is that there is no way that the whole team loves Rudy's system... Just Mobley, and in his heyday Olajuwon... ------------------ Check out my homepage! Granted, I've only watched two games since Monday ( ), but I have to admit that the iso is called alot less than it used to be. ------------------ We're going to stay together until something happens, if something happens. - Sidney Lowe on Shareef's career in Vancouver.
kidrock, let me get this straight, basically your saying you dont think the Rockets can sign Webber b/c of Rudy's ineptitude? Lets completely disregard the fact that players have outwardly stated they are big Rudy backers and would love to play for him since he is very understanding of them. Forget the fact that Garnett praised Rudy T throughly, he's a negative since you say so. As the season has progressed esp recently, the Rockets have gone less and less with the guard isolation and more with the screen and roll. The screen and roll looks to be developing into a staple play for the Rocckets, and Chris Webber fits right into those plans. Webber is an excellent screen and roll forward and should be able to fit brilliantly into the offense. Also, Webber is a good passer out of the high post and should be able to hit guards for easy scores moving w/o the ball. ------------------ Check out the Best Source for Draft Info Draftsource.net
If your such an anti-Rudy, than why even post on here Kidrock8, you know everyone is going to fire back at you. But it response to your post... What happened with Barkley...he didn't end up dissapointed. And I wouldn't say Hakeem is really dissapointed, he just feels he has more left in him. And you can't say we didn't try with Pippen...b/c every time he got the ball he shot up a 3, instead of using his so-called good driving to the basket skills. NBA fans need to face it, Jordan and the triangle made him look good when he really is just an semi-star at best. He hasn't done anything on the court better in Portland than he did in Houston, except they made the playoffs. But it wasn't because of him, I assure you of that. It was because they are loaded with talent. Mo Taylor will be here as long as we have room to sign him. Nothing is worse to him than his Clipper days, and he is feeling great right now under Rudy. Shandon is a little more questionable for the future, but if he leaves it won't be from dissapointment. Remember all the CBA players we brought in 95 and 96? A lot of that was due to Rudy. He has an eye for talent, and that is part of the reason he is a great coach. He turned Mario Elie, Sam Mack, Chucky Brown, and now Moochie Norris from CBA stars to well known NBA players. I don't know how you can say he isn't a great coach...he is on the verge of possibly having championship teams with two different eras of players. ------------------ "Steve is good. Steve is real good." -- Cleveland's rookie point guard Andre Miller on Rocket rookie point Steve Francis
Having all that cap space can be a burden as well. Signing one or two players to the max significantly restricts your movement. Webber will get the max and the Mavs will give Finley the max and Mutumbo should get it but that's it. Even Taylor isn't going to get $7 million per. Most guys will be getting contracts ranging from $3 to $5 million per season because most teams just don't want to overpay for people any longer. There will always be one or two crazy deals, but not as many as before. Part of being "playas" in the offseason is adding pieces to the puzzle. That doesn't necessarily mean adding 2 or 3 superstars. It just means good solid players. IMO, Webber, Francis and Mobley are enough scoring stars to make up a solid core to go with Anderson, Norris, Thomas and others including our draft picks next season. The mix of players is more important than the individuals. ------------------ I am very very sleepy.
Jeff, Doesn't it seem as if that's a problem that the Rockets would at least enjoy to have? If Webber and Davis came on board, or even Dike were signed to a 8 or 9M per contract (not unlikely given all of the crap that people have tried to force upon ATL) the Rockets wouldn't lose any continuity. Davis or Dike would be serviceable centers that did as they were expected, defended and threw outlet passes to the running crew. Worse things could happen, the Rockets could sign Cato to a 6 year, 42... oh wait, nevermind. But I agree w/ you about the league turning into a bunch of 3-5 million dollar contracts, I've been arguing that for the past year and a half. The days of big contracts are over. (Davis at $6.5m/y or Dike at 10m/y) and Webb at 11+m/y still sounds equitable. That would entirely compliment this team... what you lose in a center w/ a jump shot you regain in defense and boarding and transition offense. Mmmm... yummy. ------------------ We're going to stay together until something happens, if something happens. - Sidney Lowe on Shareef's career in Vancouver.
Jeff-I'd have to disagree with the thought of 3-5 mill being the standard. Look at even last year. Tim Thomas got a contract averaging 10 million per....and he wasn't even going to be a starter. Mercer got money. Fortson got like a 6 mill a year contract off a season he played like 15 mpg. IMO, there will be more "max" players. ------------------ The Serious Police are watching. Follow the rules or be assimilated. Shandon is underrated.
NIKE: That is true. But, each year that goes by, the number of players that get the big bucks decreases as teams run out of cap space. When you think that only two teams really had any cap space at all last year (Orlando and Chicago) and only two will really have any this year (Houston and Chicago), it is easy to see why teams don't want to kill their cap space. Achebe: Generally speaking, I agree. However, I do think that Mutumbo is the wrong guy for Houston. Davis and Webber I could see but I just don't like Mutumbo very much and he doesn't fit the run up and down the floor play of the younger Rockets. Ultimately, teams that have success are teams that have been together for a number of years. When their core of players has been together for 3 years +, the team succeeds. The Rockets are in the same boat. More than anything now, they need continuity and, hopefully, this offseason will help stabalize them for a while. ------------------ I am very very sleepy.
I just remember reading that in the Chronicle after Collier and Langhi signed their contracts. If you can do a historical search in the chronicle (I can't), it should be right around 10/01... or before training camp started. Yeah, I did the search of the Chronicle archives last week and turned up nothing. The only mentions that I could find simply said that Langhi signed, nothing more. Also every free agent list I can find lists Langhi as a free agent next off season. That includes the lists that show player and team options. ------------------
When you think that only two teams really had any cap space at all last year (Orlando and Chicago) and only two will really have any this year (Houston and Chicago), it is easy to see why teams don't want to kill their cap space. Jeff, According to RealGM 10 teams can be under the cap by more than $5M this offseason. Of course, some of those teams will resign their own free agents and use up their cap space, but still there should be many more teams with cap space this off season. Atl, Chi, Hou, LAC, Det and Sea are all pretty much guarenteed to be significantly under the cap. ATL $15.9M CHI $24.9M LAC $13.7M DAL $7.8M DET $10.4M HOU $14.5M SAC $6.4M SA $16.5M SEA $ $5.3M TOR $7.4M ------------------
I would absolutely love to have an Antonio Davis/Webber frontcourt. It would kind of be reminiscent of Hakeem/OT. And then there's still Francis and Mobes + maybe a good SF draft pick. *sigh* ------------------ snap crackle pop
