Why didnt Yao score 20 points in the losses vs. Clippers, Grizzlies, Indiana(twice), 76ers(twice), Wizards?

if they keep take bad shots, turn the ball over and don't give yao the ball, how could he score 20+ and win the game?

I did not check the stats, but I guess in those games Yao both took less shots and shot poorly with low rebounds to go. The problem was Yao's passive attitude generated by his own teammates.

    Several comments:

    1. I'd like to see our record when Yao shoots 8 or more free throws.

    2. The reason why Yao's scoring is important is all related to the foul issue. If he is scoring efficiently, it usually means the refs are calling the fouls against him properly and he is shooting a lot of free throws. If he scores low, it usually means he was in foul trouble himself or the refs weren't calling the fouls on his defenders who were shoving him around with two hands. Yao's high scoring is directly related to his foul count and to how many fouls he is drawing against his opponents.

IMHO, when I view games, I look to see how Yao is defended and are the refs calling the fouls against his opponents. This is the #1 key to success for us. If I were Adelman, I would hire one guy whose job it was to watch Yao's defenders and holler out "TWO HANDS!" every time Yao's defenders put two hands on him in the post. That has got to be a constant theme from our bench to the officials, a constant beef. In the games where the officials DO NOT call those fouls, it jams up our offense and forces the game much tighter. Hence, the lower win percentage. IF.........the refs would consistently call the post action properly, we would likely have about 5 losses for the season right now, despite the injuries.

But what happens is if the refs are not calling the two handcheck fouls, then we naturally go away from Yao, because his turnovers go up and his shooting percentage goes down as the defense is allowed to rough him up. That in turns leads us to guys like Rafer and McGrady taking low percentage bombs, which craters our offensive efficiency further and takes us down to a slightly above average team.

You can look at Yao's points per game, you could look at his free throws taken, you could look at his foul count, you could look at his opponent's fouls against, and it will all tell the same story. There just aren't many games where Yao is scoring over 20 points and taking a high number of shots. He is averaging a little over 19 points right now at 13 shots per game. Which is a very efficient 1.5 points per shot. That efficiency is directly related to how often he gets to the line. If you pull up our win percentage in games where Yao averages over 1.5 points per shot, we are probably undefeated.

In games we win, Yao averages 1.66 points per shot and over 22 points per game. In all of our losses Yao is averaging 1.25 points per shot and 15 points per game. In games we win, Yao is taking an average of over 7 free throws per game. In games we lose, Yao is taking an average of 5.4 free throws per game. In games we win Yao is taking an average of 13.5 shots, in games we lose Yao is taking an average of 12 shots. In games we win, Yao shoots an average of 60.5% from the field. In games we lose, Yao shoots an average of 43% from the field.

That should tell us something. Why would his shooting percentage go from 60% in wins to 43% in losses? Why would his free throws go from over 7 to 5.4? Is it because he isn't aggressive enough in our losses? I ain't buying that. The reason is because of inconsistent officiating. Yao becomes passive as a result of getting banged around and no foul calls. The officiating is what creates his passivity. He doesn't want to turn the ball over. He doesn't want to take the shot and know he is going to miss because he is getting banged by two defenders and pushed by two hands in his back/torso.

I'm sorry but I don't believe Yao's effort level fluctuates that much during the course of a season. Yao gives consistent effort. It's the officiating once again dictating what style we are going to play. And this is where I feel Adelman and his staff are not doing their job. They should keep Yao in there and make him run over a couple defenders, get an offensive foul call or two or three, whatever it takes to get the officials attention and get the league office attention that Yao is being officiated inconsistly and not by the rule book.

We could win 70 games easy in a season if the officials were forced to call the action against Yao properly.
