I don't know, they've been promoting the hell out of that movie. It's only real competition this weekend is The Black Dhalia. There have been much worse movies than The Gridiron Gang that have made a bunch of money...
I actually think Dwayne is a pretty good actor. I loved The Rundown and thought his part was pretty funny in Be Cool (or whatever the name of the Get Shorty sequel was). He just has that wrestler stigma hanging around him. Were he to get a chance at a really good action movie, I think he could be the next Ahnold. Part of the problem is he seems to take pretty crappy projects.
Who didn't like the Scorpian King? that was Cinematic GENIUS! Rocket RIver That's GOLD JERRY . . . PURE GOLD!
I think the thing that annoys me about the commercials for Gridiron Gang has been that phrase about how most kids making a mistake just get grounded or their car keys taken away, but the kids in the movie end up there. I know some people are connected enough to keep their kids out of serious trouble, but the average kid does not just get grounded for stealing a car or bringing a gun to school.
I could happen way more often than it really happens, it would still pale in comparison to the percentage of kids getting the normal punishment of getting sent to juvie. And before it turns to a debate, I'm only talking about that line in the trailer. The true story the movie is based on is of course, a very good thing and hopefully more kids in juvie can get that kind of help and attention to turn their lives around.
I applaud the move. The nickname kept him tied to the WWE, which loses you instant points in respectability. He actually looks like he has some ability. Apparently he was the only good thing about Be Cool. I was skeptical of Gridiron Gang at first; seemed like another empty Hollywood rehash. But it does actually look like it has some depth, from the trailers at least.
I think you're reading to much into it. Plus, what I took it to mean is when most kids make a mistake, its cheating on a test, lying to their parents, being out after curfew or something else that would only warrant a grounding or loss of priveleges. But other kids, who don't have a healthy family environment, they make a mistake it's roberry, assault, doing drugs, etc and they end up in jail.
Which Longest Yard...the classic Burt Reynolds film or the s****y Adam Sandler remake? I think some of ya'll are underestimating this movie. It's a football movie primarily aimed at youths whose debut at the box office coincides with the start of High School football. How will it not make money?
I agree with those who thought he was pretty good in Be Cool, an otherwise completely terrible movie. Rundown was pretty good but as someone else pointed out, you won't get taken seriously as an actor with action roles. But the opening scene where he has to get money from the QB in that club? That was a great fight scene. Walking Tall (the remake) was terrible but I don't think you can blame the Rock.....er DJ for that.
is it just me or is everyone else tired of these feel good sports movies where they take these hopeless kids outta the ghetto and put them on a sports team. how many of these will they make??? although coach carter was good, i must admit.
It comes in cycles...remember all the "disaster" flicks of the mid-nineties...Armageddon, Deep Impact, Volcano, Dante's Peak. Then the War movies (i never get tired of this genre though)....Saving Private Ryan, Thin Red Line, Enemy at the Gates, Black Hawk Down, We Were Soldiers, Captain Correlli's Mandolin, Windtalkers, Band of Brothers, etc. So you can probably think Remember the Titans for this current inspirational sports movies cycle.
Bull****. Just admit that you are dropping "The Rock" so you don't have to give Vince McMahon a cut of your movie earnings anymore. Geez.
