Absolutely. That was purely chasing the money with no regard at all to his future career.

I think if we're giving credit to owners and GMs (especially one who got extremely lucky after drafting Appel and Aiken back to back with the 1.1 pick of the draft), we should definitely give credit to the players who produced on the field, especially Jose Altuve. Altuve brought the team back to relevance and absolutely carried that first championship team on his back.

All the tanking and draft capital and free agent spending wouldn't have resulted in anything without the little superstar who signed as an amateur free agent in 2007, back when Drayton McLane was team owner and Tim Pupura was GM.

ARod's first contract with Texas was completely worth it despite Texas having to eat some salary.to trade him. It was signed when he was 25 years old and he was an all-star level player until 35. Granted he opted out and signed a second contract, where the last few years were under water, but it netted the yankees a couple of championships, so I don't think the Yankees are complaining about it.

Most of these long contracts are still ongoing but the players have been productive. Machado is in year 7 of his 10 year deal and still great. Feel like Ohtani is going to turn out to be a steal even at his big number, based on the deferred comp. Judge. Harper. Seager helped the Rangers win a title. Time will tell but the success rate is higher than some think.
