this makes a lot of sense given they called him in the morning and rejected him in the evening

This, they know if P.Jackson came back and wins, all the credit will be to him not the Lakers brass who brought in Nash and D.Howard. Don't forget D'Antoni won a gold medal with Team USA in the Olympics recently, so he was hired possibly for recruiting Team USA players and soothe D.Howard who may resist P.Jackson's overbearing way. D'Antoni is going to have a lot of pressure, they went from 11 rings to 0 rings.

The mystery is over, the conspiracy theories discredited. Mitch Kupchak gave an interview to reporters yesterday morning on this exact subject.

The same reason they pushed him out in the first place -- he's too domineering and Buss and Kupchak didn't appreciate him second-guessing their decisions.

I'm sure that played a part in the decision-making, even though Kupchak doesn't address it.

But ultimately I believe him when he says that Lakers brass felt that the triangle would be a bad fit for their current team--that it would marginalize the talents of Nash and even Howard, who they view as the future of their franchise.

So the Lakers go from Mike PnR-never-won-championship Brown to Mike I'll-ask-my-PG-to-PnR-to-death D'Antoni?

I'm pretty sure that PJ didn't want the job. So, he did what anyone in a good position would do. He asked for the moon. If they caved, then it's an opportunity he can't pass. If they don't, who cares? Stay home and enjoy life.

I just went through a similar situation in a job interview. It was exhilirating.

What's interesting is that Jackson never expressed immediate interest in the position and they never offered him the job either.

According to Kupchak, the early reports about travel restrictions, salaries, etc. were completely false. Things hadn't even advanced to the point where they'd be negotiating that sort of stuff.

"Sources" were not only wrong, they were basically lying about the status of the talks between both parties.

Again, this is if you believe Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak. And I happen to believe him over "sources close to the organization" any day, as there is no source closer than the man who was actually at Phil Jackson's house and speaking with him about this.

I thought I read that phil also wanted long road trips off so he didn't have to travel with the team.

We all read that. It was a lie.

Phil wanted a couple of days to think about it, while the Lakers thought of this as an ASAP situation. Buss moved on to the 2nd candidate. Simple as that.
