I remember reading somewhere in the Houston Chronical that JVG did play ball back in the days...I think it was for highschool or some other league(college?). So he did experience basketball on the court wise, probally the reason he was a good coach in NY. I think the problem is, he hasn't played in a major league like the NBA before, where the game are totally different from other league. All the great coach like Sloan,Jackson, and Brown all played proffesionally so they know what it takes to be great.

The reason why JVG can't coach offense is because he doesn't believe in it. He relies soley on defense to win his games, which is fine, but not on a team that has a 2-time scoring champ and a HUGE chinese guy ready to explode.

Go to NBA.com and look at the JVG teams. None of them scored more than 90ppg except for 1 season, and he has had the likes of Houston/Sprewell/Ewing/Starks/LJ/Francis/Mobley/Yao/Taylor/
    Jackson/TMac.

The problem is that when we need to score we don't know how. We don't know how to score early in the shot clock, because JVG uses all the clock on every play. We don't know how to run a fast break even when we get the chance.

Time isn't going to change things, Sura isn't going to change things. This is the type of basketball JVG plays, history backs up my claim. Don't look for much to change under JVG.

Whats with this infatuation with scoring? So what if his teams haven't averaged 90. Boo Hoo.

He also has never coached a losing team. He also has never been out of the playoffs.

    Cry me a river, Britney.

Have you been watching our games? We are out of sync. We don't have much chemistry. We look like a team put together just last month. Look what happened last time a team was put together in a month, in the Olympics.

Ewing was a relic when JVG was head coach, and JVG got them to overachieve. Once we get it together and play at optimal efficiency, we will average 90-92 points and start kickin ass.

Teams can score less than 90ppg in the East no problem, but we need to score to win games in the West. JVG runs an Eastern style game and we aren't in the EAST. Look at our recored East vs. West last season, that tells you everything right there.

I have been watching our games, I watched all the games last season, and I am seeing the EXACT same problems.

JVG did get that vet team to play his style of basketball. But when they got too old, he was left with a bunch of guys (except Houston/Spree) that never played all that much. And JVG lost it-he freak'n quit.

I sure hope you're right that JVG can get this team going and kick'n ass. But getting the Knick's to the playoffs/finals isn't that great of an achievment. Winning championships and having your team at the top of the standings is.

Rikesh316. Jeff Van Gundy did play basketball. In fact, he left another school to start at another school. Where do you come up with this crap? I know you go on your intuition, so I'm curious to see how you actually came up saying that Jeff Van Gundy never played basketball.

JVG would be better as a college coach. His offense reminds me a lot of what Rick Majerus did at Utah. It worked, but that was because college ball can be slown down.
