Haha, I remember that. I wasn't there but it was the story. That was in '93? I think people stated throwing stuff at him a lot because he was such a b**** about it.
The Pumpkins are great. I am not surprised that there has been some hatin' going on as I admit Billy Corgan is a somewhat easy target for that. But I am a little dismayed that there haven't been more SP fans speaking up. "Siamese Dream" is my all-time favorite album by them. I thought about playing my box set "The Aeroplane Flies High" the other night as I was listening to the Cars' "You're All I Got Tonight" (which is off the first Cars album - one of the greatest debut albums ever, but that is a story for another time).
that show was fall 93. it was my friend brian's shoe actually. it came off whilst crowd surfing and someone chunked it and hit billy in the face. billy got mad. they were actually pretty good live at that point. when i saw them in 96 i actually fell asleep, i was so bored.
Did anybody like Zwan? I liked the first single, "Honestly" and the album was pretty decent. When I heard they broke up, I was actually disappointed. If SP comes back together, more power to them, but if not, we're not missing anything.
That's awesome about the shoe thing. When I did see them in 2001, while one of the band members had his guitar tuned, they told the crowd that story. I thought it was funny then, and even more funny now. I got the impression Corgan didn't like it too much though.
oh, so they DID return to Houston after the shoe event?? I thought Corgan vowed never to return... too bad.
The Pixies created the genre. Nirvana brought it into the mainstream. And the Smashing Pumpkins perfected the art. The most musically sophisticated "grunge" band to come out of the early 90's. I wonder if the sound will continue to evolve as Corgan now seems less gloomy. Or do they go back to the roots? Either way I am excited...
funny..i don't see them personally as "grunge." i don't know what i call them other than rock...but i don't hear grunge. i'm not saying i'm right...just my subjective ear on it.
i never really saw them as grunge. they seemed to be more rooted in hendrix style psychedellic rock than dirty punk. at least their early stuff like gish, where billy was ripping some tasty guitar solos and he wasnt wearing a cape and thinking he was a vampire. i would agree w/ them being the biggest band to come out of the early 90's though. i remember w/in like a week nirvana, pearl jam and the pumpkins all played at the vatican - around fall 91. nevermind, 10 and gish all came out right around the same time too. there was also a show at the unicorn in late 92 w/ pearl jam and the pumpkins opening for the red hot chili peppers. fishbone and primus were the next night and i could only afford one so i went to fishbone and primus - no regrets - great show.
Dude the Smashing Pumpkins are a freaking great band. Jimmy Chamberlin is one of rock's all-time great drummers, Billy's voice is so uniquely soft but angry. The guitar work of James Iha and Corgan is awesome... Crescendo's are monstorus. They could write eloquent ballads, and balls-out rock songs. Anyone that disagrees needs to go listen to Geek U.S.A. from Siamese Dream. Bring 'em back. I miss them!!
I LOVED the Smashing Pumpkins (through Pisces Iscariot) then forgot about them. I've seen them twice once at Liberty Lunch - I think the night before the infamous Houston shoe incident. Corgan was an ass - he ragged on the crowd off and on throughout a short set (about an hour). The second time I saw them was the tour they went on with Pearl Jam and RHCP - it was really good, but the Pumpkins were the third best show that night. Now why would Corgan talk about getting the Pumpkins back together right as he's releasing a new solo album that no one is paying any attention to...
it wasnt me, it was the one armed man! i do remember that. it was his favorite hat which he wore in most videos and photo shoots. he was pretty cool about, but you could tell he really wanted it back. he wasnt mad as much as disappointed. "please give it back". he did get it back.
One of my favorite bands of all-time. Enjoyed the lyrics, enjoyed the sound, and they put on a good show in concert. I'm psyched about them coming back, although I did enjoy their early stuff more than what they evolved into.
I was at that show. It was at what was then known as Rockerfeller's West. Billy commited the cardinal sin of telling the crowd to stop throwing stuff our they would leave. Sure enough..plunk. It was pretty funny. What sucks about it was that they were really smokin' that night. That was the only time I saw them when they were actually good. As for the reunion...who didn't see this one coming?
Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie were their pinnacle...then they started changing their music, which is all fine and good but the new music wasn't as good, throughout that time Billy kept namedropping the Beatles as examples of bands changing their sound for the better, but to me there is no contest between those 2 bands as far as evolving their sound. Seems to me the SP became in their late stages U2, the band that just has to be always relevant and just has to have that so called "#1 band in the world" title. But they had some great music in their time.
