We won't win a championship by keeping Dragic over Lin, paying Parsons, and drafting someone other than Royce White.
These are all 'middlemen' moves. Morey gives leniency to legit stars, throws cash at them, and surrounds them with roleplayers.

Do I think we could have some better roleplayers on the roster right now? Yes. Do I want something to happen before the season starts? Yes.
There is still time for something to happen, and I've been wrong in criticizing our off-season moves in the past.

 

First off, Morey did not draft Yao or trade for Tmac. He did not fully build that team. Second, you anoint a team championship caliber without the team ever competing for championship? Talk about jumping the gun. So again, what championship caliber roster did Daryl Morey assemble?

Morey has been with the Rockets eight years (!!!), and in that time he's constructed two different championship-caliber teams. The Yao-McGrady-Artest Rockets didn't win a championship, but it wasn't for lack of NBA talent. The Harden-Howard Rockets have had one year.

Most organizations never assemble that kind of talent once in an eight-year period, let alone twice. It's pretty damn remarkable. I don't know if this Rockets team will win a championship -- no one does -- but if they don't, it won't be because they have a bad GM.

 

Evidently, every time a GM joins a team, he needs to find a way to void the contracts of all the current players to start the franchise from scratch to get any potential credit for "team building."

 

So in other words, if players hadn't been overpaid this off-season, as they are in every off-season, or if players had chosen not to follow the money, as they most often do, then Morey's master plan would have worked perfectly? Is Morey's vision dependent upon teams and players choosing to act in a way that only benefits the Rockets? I hope not.

I guess his plan is always to swing hard to try and improve the team. I don't know if there are any bench vets who would have definitely made us contenders for the length of the contracts they ultimately signed?

If we manage to upgrade the PG or PF spot, then we are well ahead of last season.

 

The only thing I criticize Morey for is sticking with Mchale.

 

And even this criticism can be mitigated if we can somehow pull off a Kevin Love trade (Love would love to reunite with him).

Did Morey draft Yao Ming? Did he trade for Tmac? How exactly did he build this "championship caliber" team that never even reached the WCF? Stop giving him credit for something he never did. As far as our current Rockets, we aren't even close to contending lol. Did you even watch last year's Portland series? I did. Plus even MOREY said multiple times this team was a "player away" from being a contender. Yet Centerville on clutchfans.net has annointed the Houston Rockets contenders without even getting past the 1st round? lol. Please stop while you have a chance

 

If you have suggestions about different avenues of improvement, please feel free to share them, otherwise stop complaining. Nobody cares how outraged you are at Morey.

The question isn't what championship caliber roster did Morey assemble, but how would another GM have won us a championship in the same position or even have us significantly closer? What are the moves that Morey missed on that a different GM wouldn't have made that has us with one or more titles over the Heat and Spurs the last few years?

That's how I judge front office performance. Sure the bottom line matters, but I need to have a clear cut reason to think someone else is going to have me significantly closer to those end goals, or I don't change because the GM didn't meet a goal I don't think any other GM would have met. There are other GM's that are just as good, maybe a few are better. It's hard to imagine that whoever you consider better is looking to leave their contending team to come here though.

Pick your GM of choice and we can nit pick their resume and find moves they missed on. It's inevitable. How bad do those misses set your team back? Even if another GM makes none of the same mistakes Morey did, they inevitably would make different ones. You can't just assume they would have the same successes and none of the mistakes.

Morey isn't infallible, or perfect, but you will be hard pressed to find a better available replacement and you can easily find a bunch that would be much worse. If the argument is that some people shouldn't paint him as the best GM to ever walk the earth before he has won a title, then I can agree with that. If the argument is that he is the reason we haven't won a championship, then you have to explain how any other GM would have won us a championship in the same situation.

 

How bout if I make the same request of you.

I have posted nothing prior to this that would give away my loyalties towards any member of the Rockets FO or players so you cant accuse me of being president of some fan club that only you imagine.(by the way, aweeesome debating skills there hoss)

You talk alot of **** yet I see nothing from you that makes any sense as to what they should be doing instead.

So tell us oh great one, great seer of things that us meer mortals can not see....what are we missing that only you can see?

Keep in mind, we expect all your suggestions to have very clear proof that they are right or we get to skewer you as an incompetent dolt, just like you do.

Can't speak for the man, but he was super aggressive & I respect the hell out of that. Myself I might have gone after Gasol HARD and taken my shot with him and Chandler (even an overpaid Chandler). Obviously he didn't agree. But I'm curious,

What was your right move? Just overpay like everyone else? Pay Lin, Asik, & Parsons $15 mil apiece (more than Harden + Howard) just to keep the team together? What's your call?

Morey assembled the complementary pieces that, in my opinion, elevated the team to "championship caliber" by 2009. It's a subjective judgment -- one with which you're free to disagree -- and we'll never know if they would have fulfilled that promise, because the two superstars' careers were ended in their primes.

A loss is a loss, but the teams were clearly about as evenly matched as two teams can be. In any case, I happen to agree with Morey that the team is a piece or two away from being a legitimate "contender."

However, I do consider a team that...

a) has the best 2 and best 5 in the league
b) is still fairly young and has only one year together
c) is in position (cap, assets) to add the one or two pieces they need

...to be "championship caliber," even if they aren't yet legitimate contenders. That Morey was able to do this after just three years out of the playoffs and NO losing seasons since the Yao-McGrady-Artest team imploded is remarkable. No other active GM in the league has accomplished anything like it.

I think you should take a deep breath and wipe the spittle off your chin while you have a chance. Did Morey diddle your boyfriend or something?

 

This is an excellent post. All that guy does is complain and call other people idiots. Meanwhile I have yet to see him string together a cogent argument that is not filled with fallacies.

 

I say the same thing when watching Morey's fan club make excuse after excuse for him. The best GM in the league? That alone is a fallacy

Lol@all the people arguing bottom line results. Are you also saying that Darko Milicic is better than Malone? Morey has been here EIGHT years and has no ring. Well Malone played for almost TWENTY years and has no ring, surely that's more than enough time to win a ring, right? Right? The truth of the matter is 8 years isn't even enough to build a contender if the pieces didn't fall into place, if we look at teams like Detroit, Atlanta, Toronto, Kings etc. all those teams have been rebuilding since YaoMac era and are still rebuilding today. You can say their GMs have been terrible but what about Presti? The dude has been the opposite of Morey, he got a club that had Durant, another lotto pick and massive cap space on day 1, and yet 6 years later he has had the same number of rings as Morey has. If you look at his situation and Morey, they were light years apart in terms of starting points and yet in just 2 more years Morey made a roster that can be comparable to a guy who had a superstar on day 1 and like 5-6 lotto picks.

In the case of GoRox specifically, Im sorry to say but all the posters making well reasoned posts are just wasting their time, no matter how you present the facts its really easy to just keep repeating the same old and tired arguments again and again, and when all else fails just call someone the president of Moreyfan.net and move on to someone else. When I was arguing with him he basically admitted "no one is saying Morey isn't a good GM", now I see him claiming he is outraged at how bad Morey and his staff have been doing. Its time somebody calls out his BS.

 

Why...??? Things that Morey does haven't shown you clear proof he is right. But maybe Morey will use his suggestion if he reads it and likes it since he likes to read clutchfans to get ideas... Which is probably why we're in the mess we're in now. Lol..
