At University of Chicago, they had a march about 2 weeks ago. They did some provocative stuff -- they put a bike lock on a decorative gate and threw paint on a bronze sculpture (it was later cleaned with a power washer). Police responded in riot gear, tackled and arrested one protester which set off an escalation in which other protesters tried to stop the police car from taking him away and it turned into a bit of a brawl/beat-down. Some cops got pushed or kicked and a police car was damaged, while protesters were beaten with batons and pepper-sprayed. Ultimately 3 were arrested.

Yesterday, one of the arrested was evicted from his dorm and put on leave of absence. He hasn't gone through any of the academic disciplinary process yet. He's lawyering up to sue.

Just sharing this vignette to illustrate that this unrest on college campuses is probably going to get worse. At least some universities like U of C have decided to get more tough on protesters. Protesters, meanwhile, are maybe disillusioned with the failure of the peaceful encampments from last year to get any results (even colleges that struck a deal to vote on divestment are voting against divestment) and are now edging into more provocative actions. The election is probably tamping down some activity, and then winter weather will be a deterrent after that. Come spring time, if Israel is still killing people, I think it could be big.

    Good.

So far, everything seems to be getting much better with Trump than under the previous admin. Every little thing. Return to sanity.

My Aunt worked at Rice for many a year.
She was in charge of all their real estate holdings that were bequeathed to the school from doners.
Lived on Watts Ave. Just a medium walk to her work. I loved spending summers in the Rice village. I used to go to this place called Butera's and get strawberries and cream daily. wonder if they are still around?

Rice Village was cool; we lived in West University Place, had a double lot. my old man did his residency at Methodist Hospital. got to hang out with him in the doctors lounge when he was on call, and watch The Man From U.N.C.L.E. on the color TV.

moved away in '68, but google maps shows they built an extra house in our old back yard.
