I agree. He's a puppet and I don't understand why anybody is paying attention to specifically him. He's probably about to get paid though and will be making six figures through a TV show, book, or something else handed to him by all of the unneeded attention.

    another plumber further...

Knoxville's Joe the Plumber doubts Obama, too

Knoxville's version of "Joe the Plumber" is Joe Shanks, the owner of Joe's Plumbing Service of Middlebrook Pike in West Knoxville.

    Michael Patrick/News Sentinel

Knoxville's version of "Joe the Plumber" is Joe Shanks, the owner of Joe's Plumbing Service of Middlebrook Pike in West Knoxville.
    Who won the final debate?

Joe the Plumber, of Knoxville, that is, says he's less concerned about whether he gets a tax break if his customers still can't afford to hire him.

Still, Joe Shanks, a licensed master plumber and owner of Joe's Plumbing Service in the Cedar Bluff area, has followed the presidential campaigns the same as his much-quoted counterpart in Toledo, Ohio, who questioned Democratic Sen. Barack Obama over his proposed tax hike for those who make more than $250,000 a year.

Shanks said his business, which he jointly runs with his wife, Catherine, doesn't earn the couple nearly that much income.

Especially lately, with business at about half what he usually handles, thanks to a flailing national economy that has left would-be customers skittish about hiring him.

"I can't make money right now," explained Shanks, who's been in business for 25 years. "I've had to lower my prices just to get the job. I'm going for that cheap dollar - I have to."

Shanks, an independent voter, said he's supporting Republican Sen. John McCain, citing the official's career experience in office as the deciding factor for him.

"I'd just feel more comfortable, confident and safe with McCain," the plumber said. "McCain's been there. Obama's just not that experienced."

Shanks likened the decision to a homeowner in need of a plumber - would you hire the guy who just got his trade license, he asked, or a seasoned professional?[/rquoter]

Who would I hire? Depends. Do both have the proper credentials? Who's more focused on my problems? Did the plumber speak highly of their business or resort to putting down the competition? Who seems to be easier to work with? These are all considerations for me whenever I hire professionals. These are also considerations in my decision to vote for President.

I've hired 2 seasoned professionals with extensive experience who have done a crappy job on my house. And the person who has done the best work on my house is a kid from Texas Tech who's only been in business for 2 years.

So, somebody hand Shanks a plunger so he can pump the s**t right out of that stinky analogy.

The man should take personal responsibilityfor injecting himself into a political discussion with multiple flat out lies. He's made a joke of himself and he's solely responsible for it. Next time maybe he can just stick to the truth.

Yeah exactly, he wasn't there to seek out an explanation or solution. He was only there to instigate drama. The guy already had his mind made up before he went in there. Still, I believe Obama handled the situation well and seemed genuine in his efforts to relate to the "average joe".

Wait, what was the problem again? What business? What plumber?
What a waste of space and time that Joe Plumber guy. Shows what kind of character he has and a stark contrast to the character of Obama.

    Ya think it backfired??

I mostly disagree about the usage and relevance of the stories about him beating his wife. It's the shadier side of reporting that goes along with finding the truth behind his claims.

McCain is trying to capitalize upon other "Joes" by making him a symbol, so trying to assassinate the man's character won't win the argument and in fact will be counter productive when credible facts are unearthed.

These people operate under a different wavelength. Just as they accepted Sarah, they will see Joe as one of their own.

first off idiot joe the plumber needs to pay his back taxes before arguing against any tax policy

2nd since he makes nowhere near 250k, barack obama will be putting more money in his pocket than john mccain will..........he an idiot for worrying what would happen if he somehow did make 250k

that's like me worrying about what it would cost should my hypothetical escalade gets into an accident and totals.

Since when is revealing the truth about a liar the same as character assassination? He lied about who he was, what he did, how much he earned, etc. The media is simply doing it's job.

This guy is a total schmuck. I hope Republicans plaster this guy all over the place. I doubt hard working Americans who pay their taxes and don't beat their wives and don't lie to get on national television will be very impressed.

This guy is one of the many morons in this country that continues to vote against his own economic situation. He'd rather pay MORE in taxes to get McCain elected even though he's b****ing about higher taxes.

And this is what the candidate you support said about Obama, someone you should take lessons from:

While many believe McCain and Obama don't like each other personally, it would be hard to prove as such after listening to McCain's heartfelt comments on his opponent.

"I don't want it getting out of this room, but my opponent is an impressive fellow in many ways," McCain said. "Political opponents can have a little trouble seeing the best in each other. But I've had a few glimpses of this man at his best and I admire his great skill, energy and determination. It's not for nothing, but he's inspired many folks in his own party and beyond. Senator Obama talks about making history and he's made quite a bit of it already. There was a time when the mere invitation of an African-American citizen to dine at the White House was taken as an outrage and an insult. Today is a world away from the cruelty and prideful bigotry of that time – and good riddance.

"I can't wish my opponent luck, but I do wish him well."

If supporting McCain over Obama meant that we could ship people like you to a foreign country for permanent residence, I would gladly vote for Mr. McCain, someone who unlike you understands respect and dignity.

i agree, and you'd think that the TREASURER of Obama's campaign, Martin Nesbitt, should do the same.

Weaken the financial markets?? The same financial markets that have crashed and burned to the ground? What's he going to do, kick the ashes?

I worry about you, T_I. When Obama wins, you better have a suicide prevention hotline on your speed dial. Or make sure your passport is updated.

I notice you don't end your posts with "case closed" anymore. Why is that?

    An oldie but still enjoyable:

If you've seen or heard the ENTIRE interview Joe says something like "it sounds like you're in favor of a flat tax."

Obama goes on to explain something that makes no sense at all and it's quite obvious he was above his pay grade on the subject.

Actually Obama's answer on flat tax did make since. He said that in order to get enough money with the flat tax there would have to be a huge national sales tax, and the rate would also have to be fairly high.
