    NES

    Contra is first
    Bionic Commando is second
    Ninja Gaiden is third

Then comes stuff like Punch Out, Mega Man 2 & 3, Castlevania, Zelda 2, Ninja Gaiden 3 (NG2 sucked), Duck Tales, SMB3 and Adventure Island.

Most underrated game for NES is Faxanadu.

    SNES

Super Castlevania 4 is first (best CV ever; love this game)
Super Mario World and Zelda: Link to the Past tie for second
Final Fantasy 3 and Chrono Trigger tie for third

Super Metroid closely follows these five, then comes stuff like Street Fighter 2, Donkey Kong Country, Yoshi's Island, Contra 3, Starfox and Final Fantasy 2.

Most underrated game for SNES is Super Castlevania 4, which isn't given nearly enough recognition.

i loved marble madness, the two player mode was great, it just took a while to learn the controls.

i think ninja gaiden was my favorite series on nes, favorite game was probably contra or the first rbi baseball.

on snes gotta go with super metroid, super street fighter 2, and mario kart.

I like SC, but Rondo of Blood is MUCH better.

Symphony of the Night is my favorite. None of the similar GBA games have matched it yet.

HELL YES!!! RCR is definitely in my top 5 all time games list. Buying techniques, kicking bad guys asses, taking their money, man this game was so ahead of its time. It took Double Dragon and made it addictively fun. I have yet to find an action/figher game that even rivals RCR. To this day, I can still get some of my college friends really into this game when I introduce it to them.

Also, Mario World on SNES made Mario 3 look like crap. Don't get me wrong, I loved 3 when it came out, but with Mario World, you didn't just beat the game. In addition to defeating Bowser (the easiest task IMO) you had to find all 96 levels, beat all of star road and the special, get all the different colored Yoshis, etc. I mean, this game was just revolutionary, and paved the way for other great games like Donkey Kong Country in the future. Plus, the music kicked ass (Though DKC: 2 has the best video game soundtrack of all time IMO. Final Fantasy 3 (or 6) is just behind it).

Worst game ever was Clu-Clu Land (I think that is what it was called.) I don't know what possesed me to get it, but as a result I am scarred for life. Chubby Cherub also deserves mention in the roll of crapulence.

Alright! Alright, it is obvious everyone under the age of thirty has owned a NES in their lifetime; can we move on to a superior system like TurboGrafX16;)

Seriously I loved "Revenge of Shinobi" on Genesis Probably wasted about 3 months of my life on that one.

Earthworm Jim was also the Schyat.

What system has Rondo of Blood?

SOTN was very good (one of my top 5 Playstation games), but I still prefer SC4. Better soundtrack, better level design and non-stop action.

    NoooooOOOO!!!

anti... this is probably the first time that i've disagreed with you.

mario 3 was the shiznit and the tanooki suit rocked.

what made it even better was the movie "the wizard". it hyped up the game sooo much that it became an instant classic. possibly the only movie that fred savage's acting was halfway decent. i remember wanting to be that "wizard kid" growing up (forgot his name).

where have all the side-scrollers gooooone? (paula cole reference... yes, i listen to wuss music). seriously though... side-scrollers were the best thing since sliced bread. mario 3 i think was the first side-scroller that had the ability to go back to the beginning of a stage/to backtrack (on nes at least). good stuff! ground-breaking game! i don't think i ever beat it, but then again... i don't think i ever used the game genie on it. sigh... :(

You're wrong about that. Really, really, really, really wrong.

The Wizard was good, but they got too many of the actual gaming things wrong. (ie: wrong music while playing double dragon, a unexplained huge scoring boost when he blows the whistle in SMB3, etc..).

However, all of the inconsistancies can be forgiven because of the power glove line. :D

damn. i feel like a traitor to my generation now. sigh. :( what was the first game that did that? were you saying double dragon?

i remembered the wrong quotes/lines/music in "the wizard", but all is forgiven because the main focus of nintendo was to pump of mario 3's release... not to give a darn about the teenage mutant ninja turles game on nes or any of the other crap.

    damn... i'm old. :(

by the way... how was the powerglove? i never had one. i had the powerpad though. i remember the bad guy in "the wizard" using the powerglove while playing "rad racer" (another excellent game).

EDIT: if i remember correctly, "ghosts 'n goblins" had the ability to backtrack... didn't it?

I don't know about the very first, but you could scroll backwards in Mario 2, and that certainly came before SMB3.

    Metroid, perhaps?

Metroid and Kid Icarus came out the same day, IIRC, and were famous for being the first password enabled games.

No idea on the back scrolling though...

And Mario 3 is still mediocre. By far the worst music score in the entire series. :p
