I'm not even particularly religious but I'm pumped about this movie with all the press it's been getting. That and it'll save me some time actually reading the book version. :D

I hear the books pretty good though.

The big local church here in Plano spent $42,000 to rent out the Cinemark for several showings today so their members could go check it out. The same church has also taken it upon themselves to buy commercial airtime on Channel 8 promoting the movie, as well as their services. I assume they'll have a "free DVD with baptism" promotion in not too long.

i'm gonna organize a bunch of gay & lesbian couples to go to one showing and have us all make-out during the movie (a la Jerry and Schindlers List)

Anyone know if this qualifies for Best Foreign Language picture? Since no country speaks Aramaic or Latin anymore what country would it be representing?

"Okay, what kind of sick doggie snuff-movie is this?"

don't know yet. havent been following that thread but will check it out.

you should have asked the box office for your money back since you walked out before the movie was over.

Didn't any of the historical innaccuracies bother anybody else? I mentioned in the D&D one how the Passion has Jesus carrying the entire cross as opposed to the cross beam and also, they nail him through his hands, which is blatantly wrong. The Romans nailed you through the wrists. But this isn't even directly word for word from the Bible. There are completely made up lines of dialogue, you've got made up flashbacks of Jesus thinking about carpentry. I knew this was gonna happen, people are taking this movie to be 100% the truth when it is most certainly not. One of the worst historical rewrites has to be how Gibson turned Pilate into this sympathetic character who was bending to the will of the Jews. Learn your history, Pilate was one of the cruelest Romans ever. Knowing that this isn't 100% what is in the Bible, I just don't see why I should spend money on it when I'm being lied to and told otherwise. This movie seems to be more about Mel Gibson than it was about Jesus.

BTW, don't judge Gigli until you've seen it.

well it was a joke since we're not in D&D (yet) but now I feel like doing it for real just knowing it would piss people like you off.

BTW, how come mel gibson's not getting any death threats like Kevin Smith got for Dogma?

what event was Gladiator based on? While there was a real Commodus, the Maximus character was fictional.

Ridley Scott never said The Holy Ghost helped him direct it either.

Whining about a movie with historical backgrounds not being entirely accurate is like whining about a Quentin Tarantino movie not being directed with enough respect for civilized language.

the point is Gibson is claiming that his movie is accurate.
so if it's not he should be called on it.

OH MY GOD MEL SAID HE WAS GOING TO MAKE THIS A COMPLETELY ACCURATE FILM AND I CLEARLY SAW THE NAILS BEING DRIVEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HAND AND NOT THE UPPER WRIST. DEFAME HIM! LIAR! ANTI-SEMITE! STONE HIM! BLAME HIM FOR THE WAR!

outlaw -- are you seriously concerned with the fact that Mel includes random flashbacks that might interfere with your getting a straight version of the Gospels? somehow i doubt you're very concerned with that.

you've made your opinion very clear. we get it.

I made a serious argument, it's not my problem if you can only answer by claiming that I called him an anti-semite etc.

As for Gladiator, that was a weak argument. That movie was fiction and not once was it advertised as being based on any historical events. There weren't people coming out of that movie claiming to have had their lives changed, there weren't historians and history proffesors renting out entire theaters to show that movie to their students.

I'm a Christian, and it doesn't bother me if somebody messes with the story of Christ and pops out something like Jesus Christ Superstar or The Life of Brian. The artists behind those never claimed they were historically accurate. Now people who would call the works I mentioned "blashpamous," are going to this movie and believing that it is 100% accurate. It just exposes a bunch of frauds, like the tv evangelists who beat you over the head with the Bible constantly yet even these supposed theologians won't aknowledge that the Passion isn't 100% true.
