Dancer was fantastic, and extremely moving. The swan dress was made for her by a friend of hers. It was ugly, but bless her for being so true to a friend. Good Morning Rocket Fans! IMO the SAG awards are a better indication of who deserves what award. (I'm a little biased because I'm a member of SAG). But the SAG awards are voted on by the members of SAG. Hence you are being voted on by your peers. A much better indicator of whom did the best job. To me the Oscars have become more of a recognition of one's body of work than the actual film they were nominated for. I guess I've never been good at playing the politic game. All of the people and films I would have liked to win didn't. But I've gotta agree with Gascon here! If anyone can explain to me how Julia Roberts beat out Ellen Burstyn for best actress please do! Her performance In Requiem was, hands down, the best by any actor all year ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
I think The Daily Show with Jon Stewart said it best: "Gladiator may have been the best film, but its direction, screenplay, original score, art direction, and supporting actor could've been better." A disgusting pick in my opinion. The only thing that would've been worse is if Chocolat would've won. I'd probably have destroyed the television. Here's how it should've been: Best Film: Traffic Best Actor: Ed Harris or Javier Bardem Best Actress: Ellen Burstyn Best Supporting Actress: Frances MacDormand Best Supporting Actor: No qualms with that one. Screenplays were right on as well, even though I would've liked to see O Brother Where Art Thou win. ------------------ www.swirve.com...The reason Al Gore invented the internet.
Hmmm... On the Spacey and Washington issue, I can't agree. I've been in a bit of theatre, and Washington had what you call an "easy" role. It wasn't incredibly ambiguous, he was obviously the "good guy," and had to be righteously indignant a great deal. Granted, he did a very good job of this. But look at the ROLE, no matter how moving... it wasn't as difficult. But Spacey's role required MUCH more subtlety. The emotions he had to depict weren't as clear cut. Yet he managed to brilliantly. I enjoyed both films, and both performances a great deal. In the end though, I would have given the Oscal to Ed Norton for American History X that year... followed by Spacey, followed by Washington. ------------------ Boston College - Big East -East Division Regular Season Champs Worst to First in 2001!
haven, I think Norton was nominated in 1998 when Benigni won. ------------------ www.swirve.com...The reason Al Gore invented the internet.
Normally, I don't at all care about these awards. However, I was invited to a party to watch the thing and -- since I'm married now -- I went. There were about 20 people making their predictions there. Somehow, someway, going mostly on what I thought of the titles of the movies, I won the contest with 15 of 23 correct. I really don't know how I did it. I got a little crystal bear from Egypt for my efforts. ------------------ RealGM Gafford Art Artisan Cakes
washington won an oscar for "glory" in (i believe) 1988. what ultimately hurt him last year was the uproar over the film's depiction of actual events. not sure why it caused such a big stir, as most "true" stories devate freely to increase dramatic structure, but it made headlines and became an over-inflated big deal. and who knows, perhaps that was an easy excuse for the academy to not give the award to an african-american. i don't really believe in competition amongst actors in this sense, because each is asked to do something completely different from the other with regards to their character. but i'll say this -- it's hard for me to imagine another actor doing what spacey did in "AB". it was a medicore movie, but he gave such a complete performance, facial, body -- the man's eyes, how sad they were for the first part of the film, and how they literally jumped to life each time they laid eyes on the cheerleader... it's kin to hanks' performance this year in cast away, and why i thought he should have been a lock. what other actor would you pay money to watch talk to a volleyball for two hours? i can think of very few. i thought he was sensational, in his least showy performance, and deserved the oscar. ------------------ Ric http://www.houstonprofootball.com
bingo! it began to feel like an after school special. when it ended, i told my fiancee -- "that's for the 40+-year old white male who lives, on purpose, in complete ignorance of this situation. they'll find it shocking, i found it worthy of a 'duh'." i certainly appreciated the task of keeping some 300 story archs in line, and from a technical perspective, it was, quite possibly, a masterpiece (very jfk-like, in that regard). but it had too many stories, and the bad ones (cz jones', don cheadle's) robbed time and potential from the better ones (the movie loses momentum every time del torro leaves the screen, and douglas' story became mere surface as it gave time to other, less deserving ideas. but you could see the germ of a really explosive idea with all the politicing, and power brokering behind the scenes). my pick, unquestionably, would have been "almost famous." if music's ever spoken to you on a level above and beyond toe-tapping, it was a small valentine of a movie. and, for the record, cameron crowe can do no wrong. i thought, otherwise, it was a medicore year for movies. i was trying to collect what would have been my top five... and "meet the parents" made it. a win by default (though i thoroughly enjoyed MTP). ------------------ Ric http://www.houstonprofootball.com
I thought Denzel Washington and one of the main high school players in "Remember the Titans" were excellent. And who knows how many behind the scenes people there were that did well but no one knows about. ------------------
If you ask me, the guy who has really been robbed was Morgan Freeman. His performance in The Shawshank Redemption was better than Tom Hanks' in Forrest Gump. He was also nominated for Driving Miss Daisy, but I didn't see that or My Left Foot, so I can't say whether Daniel Day-Lewis or Morgan Freeman had the better performance that year. (He was also nominated for Street Smart in 1988, which I didn't see. But it's hard to argue with giving Connery the Academy Award for The Untouchables that year, at least in my opinion). ------------------ Houston Sports Board
I agree, but wouldn't Freeman's performance have warranted a nomination for supporting actor, rather than lead? tim robbins was the leading actor in the movie. ------------------
to answer your question -- no, seeing as freeman was, in fact, nominated as best actor for shawshank. remember, in addition to sharing the screen with robbins, he also narrated the majority of the film -- majestically. i can't imagine that film without his soothing, weathered tones. quite possibly the best on screen narration ever captured -- he's hypnotic. unfortunately, no matter how vital, narration isn't showy enough for oscar, and thus, i don't think freeman's work ever received its rightful due. ------------------ Ric Houston Pro Football.com
I think you may have just given the best description I can think of for what the actual Oscar-voting process is actually like. ------------------ "There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. Well since I just saw this thread after being locked up the last two days studying for a test and writing a paper, I feel I need to clarify things now. I didn't like American Beauty. I thought it was kinda boring and pointless. And yes I saw it more than once. And yes I know how to analyze things. I thought Gladiator was a poor man's Braveheart. In absolutely no way should it have won best picture. My choice was CTHD. By far one of the most original movies I've seen. Oh yes, JayZ and I have been together for over four years. That's right, four years. ------------------ Poopy!
He won the freakin' Best Actor Oscar. Thats the exact opposite of being underrated! As for Russell Crowe winning best actor, all I can say is GO AUSTRALIA GO! Seriously though, I haven't seen CTHD or Castaway, but I think it was a worthy performance. Plus, I think this is a case of payback - Crowe could have won for either LA Confidential or The Insider (awesome performance). Finally, I just don't get Bjork. Can one of the "musically enlightened" members of this BBS enlighted me as to why she is popular. I find her music excruciating. ------------------ Maybe all the rulers are wrong. He did a fine job in Titans...but come on. You think he deserved a nomination for it? ------------------ "There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. I agree with you - I'm just surmising why he may have won this year. The judges/voters are human. They shouldn't be influenced by past performance but they surely are. Just like when Jordan won the All-Star game MVP in his final year when everyone knows Kobe should have won it. ------------------ Maybe all the rulers are wrong. Davo, wrong answer. Yes, he won an Oscar for THAT movie, but I think he's missed on alot more then he should have. I am a big Spacey fan, and I don't think he gets just due. Heck, Hakeem won the MVP, but I still think he's underrated in history. ****, Shaq gets nominated as one of the top 5 centers ever, and Dream isn't mentioned ? Oh, but Dream won an MVP. My point is, when people sit around and talk about great actors, how many times is Spacey mentioned ? Don't jump down my throat because Spacey won an Oscar. ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? This deal isn't gonna make or break me Norm, so don't jerk me around." I think the fact that a mix of people think Traffic, Almost Famous, or CTHD should have won shows that there is no agreement on the best movie in the first place. So my question is why are any of our opinions any more "right" than the Oscar Committee and why is the Oscar Committee stupid for having made this pick? ------------------ http://www.swirve.com ... more fun than a barrel full of monkeys and midgets.
