The only travesty about the oscars was that only 1 of the 163 nominees was black. Could the academy be any more obvious about their racism? I thought gladiator was a pretty good movie, I haven't seen CTHD, and I thought Traffic was one of the most boring movies I've ever seen. By the way, I think the biggest rip ever was when Denzel Washington (the hurricane) lost to kevin spacey (american beauty). ------------------
I agree on all points of that brilliant post. ------------------ Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon is the greatest player in the history of basketball. If you disagree, you are not a Rocket fan.
Another thing. A good film doesn't always have to be a low budget tear-jerker with a sad ending. Sometimes, high budget films are actually good. Gladiator is a great example of this. ------------------ Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon is the greatest player in the history of basketball. If you disagree, you are not a Rocket fan.
traffic was the best film as far as im concerned. how is it that every year the best director's film never wins best picture? i didnt think it was boring at all. it took an unbiased look at the war on drugs, going down down the chain from the drug czar to the kingpin to the dealer in the ghetto. this and american beauty wins these awards because they tell the truth about america that america doesnt want to see. ------------------
Traffic was also deserving. There were quite a few quality high-budget films this year. ------------------ Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon is the greatest player in the history of basketball. If you disagree, you are not a Rocket fan.
SFR, admittedly, I haven't seen "the hurricane," but Kevin Spacey was awesome in American Beauty. Very convincing. He's an underrated actor. ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? This deal isn't gonna make or break me Norm, so don't jerk me around." Harry Carey "Norm, if I had a mohawk scalp, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you."
Man, you really have to see "Hurricane." Denzel's performance puts Spacey to shame. ------------------ The season's almost over...and I still really need that keg of Pepto-Bismol.
I saw both and Spacey was terrific but Washington gave one of the best performances I've ever seen. The fact is that he has been dissed by the Academy at least 4 times - Hurricane, Malcom X, Philadelphia (supporting actor) and Mo Betta Blues. I am not sure why he continues to lose or not get nominated, but it is ridiculous. I loved American Beauty and Hurricane. Spacey was terrific. IMO, Washington was slightly better. Tough call. ------------------ AAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!
Let me sleep on it, I'll give you an answer in the morning. Gascon, you don't have to sign your name on every post. We know who's writing it! Mc Mark BTW you hit it on the nosey! ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
I liked Hurricane, but I thought American Beauty was much better. Kevin Spacey took an amazing role on a low budget (I think it was filmed in the $500,000 to $1,000,000 range) film and totally completed the movie. Denzel was great... but he had the wind on his back the whole time. He did get ripped off though on Malcolm. I'll have to look up that year just to see what did win. ------------------ (===)
Unforgiven won the Best Picture Oscar the year that Malcolm X was up for it. And Al Pacino won the Best Actor Oscar for Scent of a Woman that year. ------------------ Houston Sports Board
Thanks mrpaige. That's interesting... two great films, but Denzel IMO, should have beaten Pacino. I love Al Pacino, but he rehashes characters more than Woody Allen (who just plays one ). ------------------ (===)
I second that nomination. I dont think they show stuff America doesnt want to see. Traffic, for example, was no big shocker to me and I doubt to most Americans by now. I thought it was a very boring movie. I greatly appreciated Benecio Del Toro's acting though, but thought most everything else, maybe with the exception of Don Cheadle (I just think he's cool), was kinda weak. I kinda have the same problem with American Beauty. America already recognizes these tyes of problems exist and know about them. THe story was jsut told in a creative way. Nonetheless, a lot of scenes in the movie were pointless or just cheesy. The pot kid taping the bag floating around was just really dumb. I dont care what you think, that is NOT beautiful. My vote for best movie goes to CTHD. Id much rather watch a movie about some mystical Asian world filled with cool Kung-Fu fighting, an excellent story, amazing scenery and good music. I mean that tree fighting scene shouda won the Best Picture oscar itself. ------------------
And you'd made such progress ever since dating Ali. You missed the point. You fail. Rewatch the film and I'll hide your quote before Ali sees it. ------------------ (===)
Thats just it. I understand what the point was suppossed to be, BUT certainly didn't get it "impressed" upon me by that scene. It was dumb and coulda been done much better. ------------------
gladiator was entertaining, but movie of the year it was not. I thought Traffic was great, very telling. Crouching Tiger was awesome. ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? This deal isn't gonna make or break me Norm, so don't jerk me around." Harry Carey "Norm, if I had a mohawk scalp, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you."
Gascon...don't fret. All awards shows, whether movies, stage or music, are dictated by the almighty dollar. Unless you have the cash machine behind you, you have no chance in hell of winning. Do what I do: refuse to watch any awards ceremony and watch movies & listen to music that you enjoy, rather than what is hip, trendy or popular at the moment. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
Sorry heb. Like I said, I don't know why I absolutely can't stand the music. One of my best friends said that Dancer was easily the best movie of the year, but I just can't bring myself to go watch it. And what was it with the swan? ------------------ I'm about to boldly go where many men have gone before.
While there may be some truth to that, remember, Benicio Del Toro was this year's winner for best supporting actor. I don't remember(and please, correct me if I'm wrong) a particularly strong performance by an African American this year that stood out as Oscar-worthy. On Hurricane: Terrific performance, mediocre movie. I think that hurt Denzel in the end. Also, Kevin Spacey's character is a perfect example of a character that is much more subtley difficult to pull off successfully than Denzel's character in Hurricane. Denzel's portrayal was brilliant, emotional, and in your face. Kevin's was brilliant, subtle, and biting. I would have been happy either way that year...but only if it had been either of those gentleman. Oh, I know, mcmark. It always kind of cracked me up when Mango did it, so I thought what the hell.
