It didn't have to be a complex plot, just one where the viewer didn't see the end coming a mile away. Was I the only one who figured it out so early?

I don't understand the Seabiscuit nomination either. It was a nice sports movie, nothing great. I loved Whale Rider by comparison. Agree about Pirates of, it and Finding Nemo were the most enjoyable movies I've seen this year. Lost in Translation - flew over my head. I thought the Scary Movie chick was very funny, an Scarlett has a nice butt, otherwise it did not do anything for me.

I thought The Alamo was going to sweep all the awards. What, it wasn't released? D'oh!

I agree. I can't see how the movie(s) can get so many nominations and the guy who could arguably have given the best acting job gets nothing. Rediculous.

Honestly, I found Sam and Frodo the most irritating characters (after the comedy dwarf, Gimli. Why did they do that to the character?)

Good films, no really great performances, IMHO.

Wasn't Gimli comic relief in the books as well?

I have to disagree with those who are prasing the selection of Ken Watanabe. The man has charisma, no doubt, but as far as actual acting, it was a bit cardboard at times for me, especially his need to punctuate almost every tense conversation with a glare straight ahead followed by a sudden sharp turn and stalk off stage right.

Don't get me wrong...it was a good movie, good enough to overcome the obvious and annoying Tootsie Factor...and Watanabe played a role in that, and at times was quite good. But not an even performance, IMO.

I'm surprised that "The Last Samurai" didn't get some many nominations, I liked that movie, and I thought Tom Cruise deserve the nomination of best actor.

Vescey - to all nominations for ROTK.

Having not seen Lost in Translation yet...

Here is what I think should win:

    Best Picture - Mystic River
    Best Actor - Sean Penn
    Best Actress - Naomi Watts
Best Supporting Actor - Benecio Del Toro (This one is the closest to call, I would be happy if Robbins or Watanabe got it too.)
Best Supporting Actress - Marcia Gay Harden
    Best Director - Clint Eastwood

In a perfect world, 21 Grams would win Best Picture and Inarritu would win Best Director, but oh well.

Last Samurai, Matchstick Men, and Big Fish were robbed of some nominations I think...

I think anybody who thinks any actors from ROTK should have been nominated needs a serious reality check. There was acting in ROTK? I guess they deserve something for 'acting' like there was a decent script to read from. And being able to say their lines straight-faced.

I 'geuss' the Academy didn't need a reality check though.

Which picks are god-awful. Have you even seen the other movies that got noms?

You are right that I wouldn't put money against ROTK. I just think awarding achievement for three movies and three years at the Academy Awards is ridiuclous. It's just one movie that should be looked at. It's unfair for other movies.

And Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, stands alone as the best film of the year (and all time).

I'm sure when they do another AFI Best Films thing, ZRB's notions will prove true. Citizen Kane? Bah! The Third Man? Double Bah!
