I think Screaming Atomic Pachyderm would have been a better name ... or possum.

    Grizzled says:

They're *Canadian*? This is totally undermining our 'most Canadian music sucks' theory here at the Costello household! Dammit.

I have lots of bands I love that no one else has heard of, because they're all from New Zealand. They rule though. Really.

One practical-for-poor-college-students thing about loving a band that hardly anyone else likes: if they come to your town you can usually see them in a little tiny club for next to nothing. And the little tiny crowd at the little tiny club will usually be extra enthusiastic and fun. Yay.

Ah, thanks DoD. That brought back some great memories of Pookie and the rest of the Screaming Atomic Buffalo gang. Now everyone that doesn't believe in SAB, such as the conspiracy theorists *cough* haven *cough*, can see how the alternating style and methodic rhythms of SAB and especially "Moose Pollution" are so damned catchy. I still have the beat of "Moose Pollution" playing itself in my head after this discussion of the band.

In the spirit of this thread I will pst some lyrics from a band you probably havent heard about.

    Boyzvoice - Father Christmas

Do you remember the time when you realized
father Christmas was just a lie.
How could it be true, they'd been lying to you,
and you just wanted to die.

And ever since that crucial day,
your Christmas feeling has gone away.
But don't be sad - hoo, hoo
    have no fear,
I will take you into Christmas mood this year.

    Ref:
Let me be your father Christmas tonight.
    Tonight
    Clipetieclop, ding dong -
    ding dong, merrily, oh hi
    It feels so right
Let's make love behind the Christmas tree,
    where nobody sees us.
Hurrah, hurrah, it's the birthday of Jesus.

    I will bring you presents
    I will give you hugs
    You can serve me poorage
    you can serve me "gloegg"
And I promise you that stars will shine
when father Christmas takes you from behind.

    REF

    Rap segment:
Jingle, Jingle, Ho, Ho. Father Christmas says hello.
You know what I'd like girl
I'd like to - pull you into my sack and bring you onto my sled
and fly you all the way to the North Pole - Yeah, Yeah
We can build ourselfs a huge Igloo
Where we can make love, and raise kids - Ah, Ha
Small Christmas children dressed in red,
we'll have a merry, merry Christmas the whole year through - Yeah

    REF
Hurrah, hurrah, it's the birthday of Jesus.

You find a "boyband" with a cooler song than that - I challenge you all.

lol! See, Brian Adams and Celine Dion are our export market bands, and you can't really blame us for them. You are the ones who buy it. ;) The New Pornographers is the kind of music we make for ourselves. ;) I don't know that much about them, actually, but they seem to be made up of members of a number of Vancouver indie groups. Neko Case has been in a number of interesting and very good bands including Neko Case and Her Boyfriends, which is one of the better names I've heard. I saw her at a folk festival, but she started in a punk band and has also done alt. country. If you like the NPs you might also like Sloan, they're from the other coast and are a bit popier. The Weakerthans is another band you might try.

    Other bands:
blues rock: Wide Mouth Mason, The New Meanies
harder rock:, Econoline Crush, The Watchmen
    celtic rock: Great Big Sea
chick rock: The Kim Band, Painting Daisies

Do tell! The Internet makes the world much smaller these days. ;)

Newfoundland rock, really. Might be splitting hairs a little here, since Newfoundland music has a strong Irish/Celtic background. There is a difference, though.

I did know that, but I thought the subtleties of Newfoundland (and Labrador ;)) rock might be lost on our American friends. Great, great live band, btw, as I'm sure you know. I saw them at the Calgary Folk Music Festival a few years ago. Everybody was on their feet dancing for the whole set.

Grizzled asked about my New Zealand bands. I know someone in this thread also mentioned Pavement. If you're keen on all that jangly college radio stuff (Portastatic, Yo La Tengo, the Elephant 6 bands), you could do worse than check out any of the bands on the groundbreaking Flying Nun label (http://www.flyingnun.co.nz) - the best known band on that label was probably the Chills. But there's also the Clean, the Verlaines, the Able Tasmans, Bailter Space, Straitjacket Fits, Look Blue Go Purple, Garageland (described by one American reviewer as 'a New Zealand band trying to sound like an American band trying to sound like a New Zealand band', wackily), Sneaky Feelings, Chris Knox, zillions of others. We have some cool dance stuff too, on other labels - I'm fond of Pitch Black and Salmonella Dub. Singer-songwriters - Neil Finn (although he's not very obscure since he's ex-Split Enz and Crowded House), Dave Dobbyn - lots and lots. I'll probably kick myself after I send this, forgetting someone crucial. Oh, and I *love* this little tweepop band called The Brunettes who aren't even on the internet, as far as I can tell. I've been looking for a while.

Most Aussie bands are pretty awful, IMO, but I'll give props to the Go-Betweens and Paul Kelly - really great, pretty songs.

Grizzled, I've actually heard Sloan - they're pretty good. So I suppose I can't slag off Canada anymore. Bugger. ;)

    Oh I almost forgot:

    Buffalo Tom

Very Cool band from the early 90's in the spirit of Dinosaur Jr. and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Im not sure if they are around anymore, but I loved that band. Great music!

One of my favorite lesser-known artists is Bebel Gilberto. Her first record, "Tanto Tempo," just came out last year. She's the daughter of legendary Brazilian guitarist and singer Joao Gilberto, and her music is a fantastic mix of classic Brazilian Bossa Nova and modern electronica. This record just begs to be played on summer nights.
