Thanks for the explanation. But it seems that they associate talent with being unknown. Is that accurate of me to say?

Also, if you truly like someone's music and think they have talent, wouldn't you still listen, even if they did "sell out?"

For example, I know Metallica is well known. My boyfriend has been listening to them from like day one. And he's a little upset because they've changed their image some. And while he doesn't like it, he still loves the band and listens to their music-old and new. I don't know if that's a fair comparison or not, but it seemed to make sense to me.

    Any thoughts?

What you are asking is tantamount to which came first: the chicken or the egg? Trying to figure out if a band has sold out is one of the toughest things to determine. I mean it is right up there with trying to come up with a chemical equation for ketones being mixed with esters or better yet trying to prove the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. If you look at it and think about it too long, you will pull your hair out ala Larry Fine.

So, how does one go about in determining that judgement? That is the crux of the problem, now isn't it. I mean if the Screaming Fairies had been able to turn the corner just a little bit, they would have been the next big savior in alternative/modern rock since Radiohead and the Smashing Pumpkins. Now, all they do is wash cars during the day, but play in seedy little clubs at night including one in Nashville (my sister, her husband, and me saw them....they kicked ass!).

So, remember the next time that you get that 3 Doors Down or N Sync or Limp Bizkit CD, just think about Seymour Butts (the lead singer of the Fairies) and him washing cars during the day. Life sucks, doesn't it.:(

Huh! I didn't realize it was so complicated. And I'm not familar with Screaming Fairies, but I guess there's a reason.

Well, thanks for the input at least. I know you've talked to Lynus about music alot, so I trust your opinion! ;)

How can you have all this discussion of Screaming Atomic Buffalo and not mention their epic song, "Crazy Like a Manhole Cover"? I never understood why they didn't release that song as a single, as opposed to "Moose Polution." Now, as for SAB's inspiration coming from Ludacrous Prairie Dogs, that is a sketchy accusation at best. I mean, these are essentially the only two bands playing their genre. Certainly LPD came first, but SAB's innovations over time more than give them a unique enough sound.

It is sad, DoD, to hear about SAB's band member dying, but I have to admit I was tiring of their music anyway. Once you have heard one smooth jazz/acid hip-hop/industrial/bluegrass band, you have heard them all.

I'm really more into this cup and ball now. You never know where this crazy thing will go!

RR, you're right, "Crazy Like a Manhole Cover" was also another great hit by SAB. Even though it is arguably just as funky and fresh as "Moose Pollution" I think the reason it didn't get released as a single was the public appeal.

I mean, while not to many people would really relate to "Crazy Like a Manhole Cover" and the lyrics to the song, "Moose Pollution" was just a single that not only had a beat that makes you boogie, but the lyrics and the name of the song just relate so well to everyone. I know when I first heard "Moose Pollution" after liking the name, I was immediately captivated by the spell-binding lyrics and beat.

Princess, I know where you are coming from, but sweetie you need to realise people like and dislike stuff based on many factors not related to anything at all. When I was younger, I listened to the go-gos, force mcs, chicago, el debarge, lisa lisa and the cult jam, the jets, micheal jackson, madonna, whitesnake, and all kinds of one-hit wonders. I followed every fad there was to follow. I listen to none of these groups now. My taste change as I grew older. That's it. Now, I listen to mostly traditional country and bluegrass, and I feel like I understand music better; so I am less likely to get caught up in a fad. Just know people change. What you may feel is a striking trend to underground music is just the way folks express themselves at this time in their life, a way to assert their individuality. Let them. It is healthy. :)

Here some bands that I love that not many know about (yet)

Super Furry Animals and The New Pornographers: I recently got the Nuggets II boxset from Rhino that features psychadelic rock bands from the '60's from England and all over the world and these bands reminds me of that stuff. Every song is really different and has hooks galore. I love classic pop music like the Beatles, The Beach Boys, Phil Spector, Buddy Holly and Motown and this has some the same insanely catchy qualities of this music except with a lot of odd time changes and trippy instrumentation. Most of all it is really fun and intense and makes me remember why I love music so much in the first place. The Super Furry Animals are from Wales and are actually pretty well established in the UK. They recently released "Rings Around Saturn" here it is really great. The New Pornographers are a new American band who would be the biggest band in the world if there was any justice!

Good tip on The New Pornographers EC! One correction though. They aren't American. They're Canadian, from Steve's favourite town, Vancouver. ;)

    Princess,

First of all, don't feel bad for not getting into the whole "band" thing. It's funny that I'm in a band and I was never a "band" type of person until I actually joined my first band. I'm not really into specific bands, but I'm definitely a live music junkie and I regret that I don't get to see other local bands more often.

I like the tone of your e-mails that come across like you don't have a set opinion or attitude about people that try to like bands that people have never heard of so they can brag about how they liked "so and so" before they hit it big. That happens all of the time and I'm sure that I've been a little guilty of it.

You actually get that feeling from some of the posters in this thread of "Oh yeah, well I like 'this band' that you've never heard of, so that makes me cooler."

As far as the selling out thing goes, it's about a band changing all of the things that made them good in the first place in order to be more mainstream for radio play. Metallica might be a good example of this. I'm not very knowledgable about Metallica but I remember skateboarding to Master of the Puppets. They're music that's on the radio is much different from then, but it might be that they've grown and matured as a band.
You do hear often about punk bands selling out. That just means that when their music gets radio play on mainstream radio stations, their next album will be produced by some guy in the mainstream industry and the music will sound more canned. That's good for the band because they make lots more money and much more exposure. The original fans that were there in the garage feel a little betrayed by the success and the change in order to conform, so that makes that band a "Sell Out".

Personally, I'm all for selling out. That is to an extent. If I can focus my music to a broader and more mainstream audience, but keep the integrity of my own musical vision, then that's great because more people will hear my music and I'll make more money. I could probably go on and on about this, but I won't.

Back to why people like bands.

I've said that selling out is just going mainstream. People are drawn to see obscure bands because it's music that you can't find on the radio. It's not canned. It's raw and honest. This goes for all types of music. It's also nice to hear bands mess up and have fun with the audience. People want to see that the music is real. No matter your taste for music, there's a ton of bands (groups) out there that will definitely broaden your horizons.

Princess, I don't know what kind of music you like, but I would go out and see some live cover bands that throw in some originals, so you can get the experience of what it's like to experience music in the raw form.

Stevefrancis3, puedlfor, dylan, bgm, DoD and Runninraven are dastardly knaves! No such band exists! Methinks this is a vicious chat-room-geek conspiracy to deceive the rest of the board and see if anybody actually pretends to have heard them. Seems awfull strange that only people who frequent ccnet fantasy chats have ever heard of this band!

Ha! Couldn't put it past me... impudent fools.

Check out a real band: O.A.R. Download "Craziest Game of Poker," today :D

Why haven, whyever would you say such a thing?

    Quite frankly, I'm just shocked.

    And amazed.

    Shocked and amazed.

    butterfingers - a malaysian band.
they have an album and all but just distributed locally.
maybe some of you can find their single 'chemistry' on the net and decide if they're worth mentioning or not.

Yea, haven...I am disappointed that you forgot about me.

Oh well, if you don't want to believe us about SAB, then that's your loss.

I'm listening to their forgotten single, "Smells Like Plasmatic Anus" right now as I type this.

    Hmmm...nice and soothing.

Yeah, haven. That was a cheap shot. I mean, you can say what you want about me, but to bash Screaming Atomic Buffalo after all they have been through is a low blow. You realize, of course, that the whole band only has 6 appendages between them? Only 4 now that the lead singer died. He was the most talented one! You b*stard!

I want to run my fingers through your hair,
But love is more than the touch of my hand,
Love is more than a rubber band.

You lived your life to the fullest,
Till you were killed by that big bull.....est.
I hate this world, I've got the solution,
Rid this world of moose pollution.

dashboard confessional is getting played on mtv? which songs? I had no idea that he/they were breaking like that.

I don't have cable, and anyone would be doing me a big favor if they could tell me what song/s of DC were being played on mtv.

    thanks.

Thanks again firecat and kam. I know about people's taste and how they change. The people in question would like a band though for a while until they got popular. It wasn't the taste that changed necessarily, although I know it can, but it was either the band or music or something.

Firecat, your post was just what I was looking for I think. I've always have had friends that say "check out so-and-so band. You've never heard of them." Like they're cooler for knowing about this band. I think that mentality is a little dumb, but it's whatever makes them happy. I never felt stupid for not knowing them, or cooler because I did.

And like I said, I don't really have a particular taste. I like country and bluegrass and rock and alternative and some punk and some rap, blues, classical, soft rock/contemporary, metal, pop...so I'm pretty diverse. There's not really one particular band or group that stands out for me. I like a song because I like the song. Maybe I'm wrong for that, but that's who I am. I've had bands before that I just loved but that doesn't mean I buy all their albums or love all their songs. It makes it easier for me I guess.

    Anyway, thanks again.
