I heard that the two top distributors, the ones that had agreements b/f the Wii was complete, were ToysRus and GameStop...I would assume they get the most, but I may be wrong...A friend of mine did some research and found this...
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4403662.html Nintendo to recall Wii straps after accident reports By HANS GREIMEL Associated Press TOKYO — Nintendo said today it will replace 3.2 million straps for its popular Wii computer game controllers after receiving a rash of reports that the devices flew out of the hands of overzealous players. The recall is a bittersweet development for Nintendo — a costly hitch in its three-way battle with Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, but also confirmation of the enthusiastic reception worldwide. The Wii's signature wand-like remote controller is used to mimic the motions of a tennis racket, golf club or sword, depending on the game. But soon after the Wii went on sale last month, people started reporting cases of the controller's strap breaking as they waved it about vigorously. Nintendo will allow customers to exchange the old straps, which have a 0.024 inch diameter, for a beefed up strap that has a diameter of 0.04 inch, company spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa said. The worldwide recall is expected to cost the company several several million dollars. "People tended to get a bit excited, especially while playing Wii sports and in some cases the control would come loose from their hands," Minagawa said. "The new strap will be almost twice as thick." The control wand is one of the unique features of the Wii, which Nintendo introduced as its counterchallenge in a fierce competition with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Nintendo is hoping the easy-to-control wand will appeal to a wider crowd of players — not just young men. Offbeat stories of Wii controllers crashing into television monitors still haven't hurt sales, however. The market research company NPD Group estimated that U.S. consumers bought 476,000 Wiis in the two weeks following its Nov. 17 launch. That beat Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 console, which sold just under 200,000 units amid widespread shortages. Nintendo has delivered more machines so far to consumers than Sony has, partly because of Sony's production problems. Nintendo has shipped about 400,000 Wii machines in Japan and more than 600,000 in North America. Sony readied just 100,000 PS3 machines for the Japanese launch and 400,000 consoles for its U.S. debut. Sony has promised 2 million PS3s worldwide by year's end, while Nintendo is targeting 4 million Wii units in the same period. Selling machines in high volumes is crucial in the gaming business because hot-selling formats attract software companies to make more games, which in turn boost console sales. Separately Friday, Nintendo also recalled 200,000 AC adapters for its DS and DS Lite consoles in Japan on Friday. Nintendo said the recall would not affect adapters overseas, and officials expected only a small impact on earnings. That recall will cost Nintendo about 100 million yen ($1 million).
its pretty cool how people are hacking the wiimote and using for other things like half life, drum sticks, ect... those of use that aren't lucky enough to getour hands on one can atleast get wii remotes and play around with those until next year...
Well, I went this morning at 4:45 AM to wait in line at Best Buy. When I got there at 5:00, there were already 20+ people in line, most with chairs and sleeping bags. A sign on Best Buy's door said they only had 18 units to sell. I called their bluff and waited for 2 hours (along with the 20 other people behind me), but alas, they weren't bluffing. So no Wii for me. Reports around the area were that Toys 'R Us had 12 units and Target had 18. (By comparison, the first time I waited at Best Buy, they had 40+ units.) Bravo, Nintendo. You're really coming through on your promise to ship 4 million Wiis by the end of the year. Eh. Screw this waiting s***. I've now done this three times with nothing to show for it. Guess I'll just pick up a Wii in January when stores are overflowing with them. Hope other people had better luck than I did. I'm going back to sleep now.
My TRU had 23. They told people they had 24. I was umm...number 8 in line. I was going to wait at CC, but they said they were only going to get 10 and I was number 11. Good thing I went to TRU instead
I went to Nintendo World at Rockefeller Center at 6:15. I was #120 in line, but got one at 9am. I am, however, completely frozen.
I just got home from CC at willowbrook. I got there last night at 12:30 and was number 6 in line. The only got 10. My kids are going to be happy come christmas morning. Now I have a week to find a second controller and nunchuck so they can beat their old man at boxing. Best part was a friend of the first person in line brought his Wii and a TV up to CC and we played Wii sports, excite truck and rayman from 1 am to about 6. This was my first experience playing or seeing the Wii in action in the flesh. Very cool. Very fun and addictive.
Sweet...6th in line? I was number 11 and left to TRU Who were you? I was the guy with the ARMY sweater.
I was the bearded guy in the funky hat. I was sitting there while you were talking about that one kid building gaming pc's. No one left the line so you are lucky you went to TRU. You would have barely missed out at CC. Nice to have almost have met you.
Just an FYI, I've been having real good luck at Targets lately on the Wii remotes and nunchucks. I've gotten all I need, but I've seen them on the rack probably 3 out of 4 times I've been to Target lately. (I go to Target a lot)
I got to Target (290@Hollister) at 5:50am and they had already handed out all 15 tickets. The Best Buy right next door had over 20 people too. I hit 3 other Targets, 1 TRU, and another Best Buy (all packed) before I went to a Gamestop (I-10@Blalock). I was #20 in line but the #19 guy said his wife was told by manager that they were getting 25. So I stayed in line for about 3 hours. But it turns out they only got 8. Not even close. Oh well. Guess I'm getting one in January.
Yeah, my friend called Gamestop this morning and they said some people camped out, but they only got 9...They weren't going to get anymore before the holidays...He did mention Walmart possibly getting some Wednesday...take it for what its worth...
