I don't have a problem with Tetris or games like it. Mostly just games that teach you "common sense."

I probably am overreacting a bit. My main concern with this trend is that if these games continue to sell at an crazy rate (while big games like Zelda and FF start to see declining sales), then some studios might not continue pouring $30M into a project like Final Fantasy or Zelda when they could pour that same money into 10+ smaller projects that will earn them a greater profit (Square-Enix cancels FFXIII and announces "Emo Training" or something). That wouldn't make me very happy (yeah, I'm selfish).

Obviously, if both types of games can coexist, then great. If Wii Sports (or whatever) gets "non-gamers" to buy a Wii and eventually try out Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc., then that would be awesome. Even though I seem critical of these "non-games" (don't really like that term either, but can't think of another), I'd love to play at least a few of them. Sort of like sports/licensed games in a way I guess (seeing Madden outsell MGS3 makes me sad, but I'd still enjoy playing Madden).

The thing with those games is that they're not especially deep, so no matter how fun and addicting they are, you'll always find me going back to the Zeldas and Marios and Metroids of the world. You can have your cake and eat it too!

Well, if you're a publisher for these types of games, that's why you release a new one every 6 months or so. ;)

Yeah, I'm guessing most "gamers" like us would end up playing both types of games. I'm just worried that some of the people being brought into gaming won't actually do that. They might get enough enjoyment out of gaming w/o giving those other games a chance (or so they think). Kind of like the people that just buy Madden every year and nothing else...though, to be fair, Madden does provide a lot of replayability.

    It's kind of funny.

We went to do some Christmas shopping tonight, and decided to stop by EB games. Being that I live in a town of about 30,000, they naturally had about 20! Wiis available.

What sucks is that I am poor and had no money to buy one. This student life sucks.

The local Wal-Mart told my wife that they would start selling their shipment of Wiis tomorrow morning at 8, so I'm going to wake up early and see if I can snag one. Wish me luck...I'll post how it goes tomorrow when I get to work. :)

Yeah. I read that too. Minimum of 3 per store. Not sure if you wait at Eletronics department or what since most stores are 24/7 so you'd look stupid standing outside.
If you miss out on that then most stores are supposed to get a shipment this Sunday. That goes for Target, Best Buy, Toys R Us, etc.

If somebody wants one bad enough, send money for two to me, and I'll keep one and send you the other one. :D

    It's cheaper than EBAY!

What makes you think they'd play other games if Madden wasn't around?

If the Wii does expand the number of gamers, then there'll be new companies to fit that need. Older companies htat didn't want to spend big budgets on a single game would probably crap out anyways.

Perhaps I worded it wrong. I wasn't trying to suggest that. I was trying to suggest the opposite actually.

I don't know. 8am is pretty early on Wednesday....

I was thinking of hitting a Walmart in the morning.

I understand what you were trying to say. The big thing with the 'nongames' is that I don't really see 'gamers' suddenly deciding they don't want to play the Zeldas and FFs anymore. If the other types of games pull in big numbers, more than likely they were people who weren't playing much anyway.

I am a firm believer in some of the developers' theory that on how important it is to expand the userbase.

True, although it is possible that there won't be any new Zelda or FF games to play as I alluded to earlier (or the quality might suffer in those games). With sales staying about the same, but budgets increasing significantly, would Square-Enix continue making Final Fantasy games? Or will they make several low-budget games to attract "non-gamers," which would be much more profitable for them? It is much to early to predict any of this I admit. I don't even think it is all that likely at the moment (or at least, I hope it isn't), but it is something I've thought about at times.

I'm a firm believer in expanding the userbase as well. I actually think the industry could be in trouble if the userbase stays roughly the same, but development costs (and game prices) skyrocket. A bigger userbase would be "healthier" for the industry in times like this. It takes way more sales now to break even then in did maybe 6 years ago. If the userbase is roughly the same, a lot of developers/publishers won't be seeing any profits.

If the industry does grow, and games like FF and Zelda see franchise record sales (and new franchises like Brain Training sell well too), then I can't really complain. That would be great for the industry and gamers (including the newly "converted").

I think that's probably worst-worst case scenario (the first one you are talking about). The chances that the Final Fantasy and Zelda games just 'going away' are probably pretty slim. Again, I don't really see FF and Zelda players simply stopping and playing the other types of games; in which case, their market is still there, but now if the userbase is expanded that there is room for both; as you alluded to in your second example.

I woke up at 6:45 and called Wal-Mart. They said they had 10, but there was already a line of more than 10 people, so I didn't bother. Next shipment to a big chain like Wal-Mart or Target, I will get up earlier. I refuse to be forced into buying three extra games in one of the bundles, so I will avoid the game stores and electronics chains.

Any info on future shipments would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone having trouble connecting to wireless??? I thought it was just my wireless router but I took it to a friends that works perfect for everything else wireless and it still didnt work well. I was able to get it to connect after a while but my friend had to hold it up in the air and I eventually lost connection. No matter where I am it doesnt work right. Any suggestions? Any certain kind of router that is supposed to work well?? It connects to the router but doesnt pick up the internet from it.

I have a linksys wireless G router. It picks it up fine on the Wii but just no signal will go through long enough for it to connect. It says it has a good connection though...

I had connection problems when I initially set mine up. I had to go into my router settings and make sure it was on channel 1. I have no idea why this is a problem but it is a fix Nintendo suggested. I could always talk between the Wii and the router but could never connect to get updates. Once I went from channel 6 to channel 1 it connected with no problems.

I got to Walmart at 7:45. There were about 25 people in line. There were 29 Wii's. Good news right? Wrong. The m-f-ers who work at Walmart started handing out tickets last night at 11pm. So out of everyone who was lining up only about 5 were from the group who already had tickets. The other 20 people thought they had gotten there early enough but had to wait around until 8:15 to be told otherwise.
I hate Walmart. I guess I'll be hitting one of the other stores early Sunday.
