If you're one of those nerds with days to waste, better call Best Buy's or any other dept store's manager first....

As a one-time game retail employee, this is absolutely no shock at all. Never, NEVER trust the 'initial' allotments that the companies give to the retailers in these matters.

You're right, RC; what a mess.

That entire GAF post is such a whiny crock of ****. Nintendo and Microsoft have gotten the same crap for years. Of course people needlessly hate on Sony. They do it to everyone. Fanboys are everywhere.

Now that Sony is getting it's share, too, their fanboys have suddenly turned to the 'Oh my we're such victims' BS. They had no problem piling on Nintendo and Microsoft when the opportunity arises. What a joke.

TRU will have enough to meet their preorders, although that's it:

Also, IGN has just reviewed NBA 07
    http://ps3.ign.com/articles/745/745694p1.html
7.8 from IGN. Granted, it is IGN, but I guess this was somewhat surprising. The same reviewer gave Live for the 360 a 6.0...guess it wasn't competition from NBA 2K7 that got EA to cancel the game, but competition from NBA 07. Oh how the mighty have fallen. :)

Not sure if it was clear in the quote chow_yun_fat posted, but I think the poster was talking more about bias among the media more so than gamers (that's the way I read it anyway). He (or she) wrote that post in response to this post:
which was a response to this post:
which was...well, you can just read the whole thread here:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=128704 (about Resistance getting a 8.5 from 1UP if anyone wants to read it)

As you said, Sony fans gave Nintendo/Microsoft fans crap in the past, and it is only natural that Nintendo/Microsoft fans give it right back. Nothing unusual here. But I don't think that was the point that "Moderation Unlimited" was trying to make (although I'm guessing he'd wish all gamers would act a little more mature).

From what I could tell, he (or she) was trying to point out an unusual amount of bias against Sony by professionals within the industry, not the average gamers posting on message boards. Now that's something you can agree or disagree about, but obviously that's not something that should be happening (not sure if it happened with Nintendo/MS in the past, but even if it did, 2 wrongs don't equal a right). Now personally, I'm not really trying to get into this. There are some sites that I sometimes disagree with, but I just tend to ignore their opinion and move on (unless it is really bad or something). I suppose you could come to the conclusion that sites like 1UP are bias against Sony, perhaps without much reason to be. On the other hand, maybe their views differ from most other people, but that doesn't mean they're biased. In any case though, I would prefer it if the media stayed as unbiased as possible; there will always be fanboys and people with bias, but hopefully they won't get a job working at IGN/Gamespot/1UP/etc.

So is Gamestop alone having shortages (there own problem) or is there an overall shortage? Meaning no 400,000 units.

Don't know yet, but I hope for Gamestop's sake that it is an overall shortage. They already screwed up once last year when they tried guessing how many 360s they'd get. If they got ahead of themselves again this time....wow.

I suppose Sony could have also taken systems away from the EB/GS allotment and gave them to other stores too. Although IIRC, EB/GS sell just as many systems (if not more) than any of the other major stores...although those other stores will also be selling some nice Sony HDTVs and other equipment. Hmm...

It's happened all the time. MS was dismissed pretty frequently at the beginning. Nintendo's been ragged on by all sorts of media outlets for years.

It is not 'unusual'. It's just that the Sony fans aren't used to it.

The problem is there is a mix of fanboyism and real criticism. The lines get crossed. Whether Sony fanboys want to believe it or not (and this applied to Nintendo and their fanboys with the GC/N64, and MS and their fanboys) there are very real things to criticize.

It's all there, and it has always been there. For Sony fanboys to come out crying now is a joke. So is them thinking that, just because PSP Killzone might not actually be that good that clearly it is a media conspiracy and only a media conspiracy is laughable...

...and exactly the same sort of thing MS and Nintendo fans will tell you.

So if all three suffer from it (or have suffered from it) who exactly is the conspiracy against?

EB/GS waited so long to even do preorders so they could get a better confirmation on their allotments. I don't think you can necessarily hang this on them.

    Sony's PS3 has problems running PS, PS2 games-paper

    http://today.reuters.com/news/artic...2963_RTRIDST_0_TECH-SONY.XML&rpc=66&type=qcna

TOKYO, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Sony Corp.'s (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) new PlayStation 3 game console has problems when playing about 200 software games from previous versions of the machine, the Sankei daily reported on Tuesday. Sony started selling the latest version of its blockbuster game console in Japan on Saturday, and video game magazine publisher Enterbrain has said it sold 88,400 units of the console in the first two days after the launch, leaving most stores without any stock.

The PS3 should be able to load and run games designed for earlier PlayStation models, but the paper said some sound and screen problems have been reported when these games were played on the new console.

Officials at Sony's game division were not immediately available for comment.

Sony is going up against Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Xbox 360, on sale for the past year, and Nintendo Co.'s (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) Wii, which will hit U.S. stores next week.

Sony was able to ship only 100,000 units for the launch after a glitch in blue laser diode production disrupted its output plans. It plans to have the PS3 on shelves in North America on Nov. 17, followed by a European launch in March.

You'll have to tell that to Moderation Unlimited. I just wanted to make sure that you knew he was referring to the media and not just some abnormal amount of hatred for Sony shown in forums or something like that. I thought it might have been difficult to see that without knowing the context of the post.

As I said, what Moderation Unlimited mentioned about the media having some sort of "bandwagon hatred" for Sony is certainly debatable (and probably untrue...I hope). I don't really keep up with this stuff (nor do I really care), so I don't know if it is any different from when the media criticized MS and Nintendo in the past. As you said, just because 1UP gave KZL a 5.0 doesn't mean their biased against Sony; their review certainly differs from most reviews for KZ (average of 77 at Metacritic, including a 9.0 from IGN and a 8.3 from Gamespot), but that could simply be due to 1UP's new rating system (which I hate, but I don't think it means they're biased).

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that this is something Sony did, not GS/EB (which was why I made that one comment about the launch shipments probably being decreased). I was just saying that if this was a problem within GS/EB, they sure screwed up big time. As you said, they waited a long time to make sure that they could get as accurate a number as they could. If they waited that long, but then decided to make a conservative guess of how many they would get and were wrong, then that would be pretty bad.

If it is only 200 games from the PS1+PS2 that have problems on the PS3 (some of which may still be playable, just with audio problems or whatever), then that's actually better than I expected. I think there are something like 16,000 games that came out on the PS1 and PS2 (according to SCEI anyway). So 200/16,000 ~ 1.25% if I did my math right (BC with 98.75% PS games).

That number is probably not final though, unless they sat down and tested each of those 16,000 titles on the PS3. Even if they did, 98.75% of the games could be crap, while the 1.25% could include Final Fantasy games, Tekken, DMC, MGS, etc., which would suck big time (GH2 has already been confirmed to be one of these titles :(). I guess it is a good thing the PS3 had upgradeable firmware.

Guess this answers whose fault the shortage is...those damn greedy Japanese gamers, that's who! ;)

Considering it costs less to buy one over there and there seems to be pretty good demand here, I'm not quite sure why Sony is doing this.

Some more Blu-ray impressions that I forgot to post:
    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=748982 (from d3code and Rio)
Most, if not all, the impressions I've read about the PS3's Blu-ray movie playing capabilities have been pretty positive.

Not really PS3 related, but the two companies rumored to be making a combo disc player (HD-DVD and Blu-ray) have apparently abandoned such plans and are supporting Blu-ray exclusively:
