BTW, Tekken 6 is now strongly rumored to be releasing on the 360 after the PS3 in Winter 2007, and it will include support for XBL. Don't know if this is just regular rumors (Tekken 5 was also strongly rumored to be coming to the Xbox), or something a little more concrete. I think the person who started the VF5 360 rumor is stating this rumor too, so who knows.

on my tv, GTHD looks great...It should, i downloaded that bad boy and it was 625MB!!! for a freaking demo...

btw, has anyone had any problems with regular DVD's...I've noticed in the beginning, like previews and the opening menu, a line across the screen, kinda like a scanning...i haven't played a Blu-Ray Disc yet, so i don't know if its just old DVD formats...Also, when playing the Incredibles, right in the middle of the movie, the screen went blank for about a second, losing no sound...I rewound it and it was fine, but just weird...

I have played some PS2 games and I had to create an internal memory card...This is only done, I believe, for someone that is playing PS2 games for the first time, meaning not from a game in progress...

I have yet to put a SD-DVD in my PS3. It's supposed to be a pretty mediocre DVD player. I've used it only for Blu-ray discs. All my SD-DVDs go in my Toshiba HD-A1 which is a great upconverting player.

I did have a problem with some of the extras on the Blu-ray Pearl Harbor disc. When I played the trailers, they were stretched horizontally. Anyone know if there's a way to fix that?

I don't know too much about the demos offered by the PSN or XBL Marketplace, but I think most of the PC demos I've downloaded lately were 500MB or more. I've seen several that were ever 1GB (BF2142 and Company of Heroes come to mind...think COH is even close to 2GB). I'd get used to demos being around that size...maybe even more on the PS3 (thanks to Blu-ray).

I hope they offer broadband in my area before I get a PS3 (or any next-gen console for that matter). :(

I think you'll need to create an internal memory card regardless, or at least that would be the smart thing to do. I don't think you can save data to a memory card via the PS3 (for some dumb reason). I'd guess that when you are using the PS1/PS2 memory card adapter, you'd have to create an internal memory card to transfer that data to.

    Or maybe not.

I gladly set up everything on my PS3 last week but I was too excited to look into the online stuff.

Does anyone know how expensive it is to sign up? I can't imagine there is much support for online gaming or at least, not that many players.

It would be neat to create a database of Reviews from people on the board for all the different games. A new thread maybe? I have Fall of Man, Need for Speed and NBA 07. What games does everyone else have?

The online services are free (except for the stuff available for purchase in the PS Store of course).

I haven't really looked into it, but I think you're right about there not being much support for online gaming. I think most PS3 owners bought Resistance, so they're might be a decent number of players for that, but it might be harder to find players for other games (especially in a niche title such as Full Auto 2 or something like that).

I thought so too, but I bought my kid Cars on PS2 and played it on my PS3 and I didn't have to do the internal memory thing...Only for Spiderman, an older game...

I played Ricky Bobby today and it looked good, but I don't have a 1080P Tv yet...Anyone else play SD-DVD's yet? I only ask as I just assumed that the PS3 would be an upconvert DVD player, but apparently not...I have one, but its in my bedroom...

So where are you saving the progress that is made when you're playing on the PS3? Can you save it to the PS2 memory card via the adapter?

You're sure it didn't save to the internal memory card you created earlier (for Spiderman or whatever)? Once that is created, the PS2 games can treat it like a normal PS2 memory card (hitting save in-game would save to the memory card in slot 1 or whatever).

Maybe Cars for the PS2 supports the PS2 HDD (allowing you to save on it instead of a PS2 memory card). In this case, it wouldn't know the difference between the PS2 HDD or the PS3 HDD, and would allow you to save it to the PS3 HDD (assuming both "look" the same to the game). In that case, you wouldn't need to trick the game into saving the data on the PS3 HDD by making it think it was saving to a memory card.

BTW, there are plans to enable the PS3 to upscale DVDs in a future firmware update. You were probably right to assume the PS3 would upscale DVDs. It is somewhat inexcusable that it doesn't considering the media capabilities of the PS3. They apparently had a team working on getting it ready for launch, but the algorithm still had some bugs.

I wanna get a PS3 this month, but I don't know what I should get. I got a couple of questions I hope some of the current ps3 owners can answer.

-Is there a big difference between the 20 and 60 gb systems? Is the 60 worth the extra money?

-I got an HDTV, and I heard/read something about having to buy extra cables for it. Is this true and if so what cables do you recommend I buy?

-How does the PS3 connect to the internet? Does it work wireless straight out the box, or do I have to buy something?

-Any other useful accessories I should think about getting?

-And finally, what are the best games out right now?

Thanks to everyone who helps me out.

RC, you may be right, I'll check tomorrow...i did save an internal memory card, but I assumed it was for spiderman only, but that doesn't make sense...

    JuLiO-R-,

I would spend the extra $100 for the 60GB...You get 40GB's more and Wifi...It was easy to set up to my Wireless network...I bought the HDMI cable, assuming your TV has that...it was like $15 at Fry's...

The only accessories I bought were the Remote Control and extra controller...I didn't have any PS2 games of my own so I didn't need the adapter for previous game saves...

As for games, I have NBA2K7 and Resistance, both recommended here...Unfortunatley, I haven't played either yet, as I've been cleaning up all day...good luck...

If you plan on watching a lot of movies on the PS3, you might want the Blu-ray remote. It costs about $25, but it seems to be in limited supply at the moment. Some of these other guys might be able to help you find one (assuming you live in Houston).

If you plan on playing PS1 and PS2 games on your PS3, you might also want to get the PS1/PS2 memory card adapter for the PS3. This is only assuming you have PS1 or PS2 memory cards with save data that you would like to use on the PS3. The adapter will allow you to copy that data to your PS3 hard drive. The adapter costs about $15, although I'm not 100% sure if it is in stores now or not (might be in limited supply as well). Note that you don't need this to play and save PS1/PS2 games on your PS3; you only need it if you want to use saves that you created on your PS1 or PS2.

Not really an accessory, but if you get the 20GB PS3, you might want to replace the HDD with something bigger. You can get a 100GB-120GB HDD for about $80-$110 at Newegg.com.
The only game that I've really seen everyone praise is Resistance by Insomniac (guys who made the Ratchet & Clank series). It is a FPS set in Europe during the 1940s in an alternate timeline involving an alien invasion (a time line where WW2 never occurred). Very solid game based on everything I've read, and the online features sound really nice. I would also recommend NBA 2K7 as rrj_gamz said, although only if you didn't already play the 360 version (not much different between the 2).

Everything else seems to be hit or miss. Call of Duty 3, Madden 07, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and Fight Night Round 3 might be good choices if you like those games. Maybe Tony Hawk Project 8 as well, but it has some performance issues. Again, I'm assuming you didn't already play those on the 360.

I happen to like the Ridge Racer series, so Ridge Racer 7 looks fun to me. I don't think anyone else here happens to like it though. Maybe give it a rental and check it out. It is an arcade racer that uses a driving model that exaggerates drifting.

To be honest, the best games beside Resistance might be the demos for MotorStorm and Gran Turismo HD. By the time you get a PS3, Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection might be out on the PS Store; some people have already bought and tried out the game since it was recently released for the PS Stores in Asia and Japan (you can do that too if you are willing to take a few chances). Those versions cost ~$16, so hopefully it will be around that price when/if it is released in the US. It sounds pretty good, assuming you're a fan of the Tekken series.

Yeah, you shouldn't have to make a new one for every game. You're just setting aside space on the PS3 HDD to use for PS2 saves.

My ps3 froze on me for the first time this morning. I think it probally had more to do with the game (resistance) than the ps3. The person hosting the server left, thus crashing the game. Im not sure if thats normal, but thats a first out of the little I've played.

Resistance could be great from above average (7 in my book) if they fixed or added a few things.

    More variety of enemies.
    More detail/destroyable objects.
Smaller maps, less people for multiplayer. 32 is a good number.

Fix the save bug. Im not sure how many times I've lost my saved game in campaign mode...I've quit playing it because of the game deleting my save file (happened 3 times). Only multi for me. I played a game with shotguns only in a small map and that was pretty fun.

If they were able to shrink the maps half the size or even a 1/3, they could do so much more. I ran around over 30 seconds in a full game (40 ppl) and there's no enemy or ally in sight. I think Insomniac was too ambitious. They should've taken a cut from Counter Strike, king of all fps's.

Hard to believe, but I'd say this game was a little rushed. They could've added more online multi maps and other misc stuff.

I've had Need for Speed Carbon for two weeks now and this game is awesome. I would rate it a 8.5. Single player mode is a little easy/short but the online multiplayer is soooo fun. I was playing the game on a sdtv and finally took my hdtv from my bro (maybe thats why he doesn't want to keep his ps3 anymore) and the game looks gorgeous.

I enjoy playing all the online modes. Circuit, Persuit Knockout, Persuit Tag, Canyon, Speed Trap and there's another 1-2 I'm missing. I've been playing this game for hours every night :(.

For the first time I decided to plant my ps3 vertically while playing NFS and it locked up on me 5 times in a roll in under a hour. I returned the ps3 back to it's horizontal stance and all is well.

I tried Marvel Ultimate Alliance for roughly 10 minutes. I didn't like it.

I played the NBA 07 demo and in short the game is CRAP. I would rate it a 3.5-4.0. The AI is horrible. The computer plays the same plays over and over again. After you get scored on, all the cpu players are already down the floor at the other end. This means you can't sneak any easy baskets after they score on you. Everytime I try to block shots with SHaq, it never works. You have to be right in front of their face to block ANY shots.

Some reason Shaq has a half a second to one second delay when I press the block button when an opponent is making a move/shot. Im sure there were more things that irritated me about this game but I can't remember it at the moment. Maybe I was spoiled by the 2k series and was expecting something simliar. Of course this was just the demo and the retail game could be better. I rather take my chances on a proven product (nba2k7) vs risking it on nba 07.

GripShift is up on the PSN. It costs $10, is ~300MB, and there's also a free demo available. I really liked the PSP version, so I'd recommend PS3 owners give the demo a try. It is basically Super Monkey Ball but with cars (not a racing game, but a "driving platformer").
