Resistance has been reviewed by IGN: Another take: And the score... Spoiler 9.1 from IGN, here are the scores for it so far: OPM: 9 / 10 Famitsu: 9 / 8 / 8 / 8 Dengeki-PS: 90 / 90 / 100 / 100 IGN: 9.1 Apparently, you can use 3.5" SATA HDDs with the PS3...but there is one small problem:
Yep. Sony promises that not all HDDs will work, but I'm hoping that's just them saving their butt in case something doesn't work for some reason. As the pic shows, 3.5" HDDs seem to work too...it just won't be very practical (at least in the current implementation...maybe some adapters can change things). Could be interesting if they can get that working though (3.5" HDDs are much cheaper, 300+ GB for ~$100 at Newegg).
Good thing you posted that pic. I was this [ -- ] close to purchasing a 3.5 sata 250 gig off newegg for my soon to be ps3. I would have been really mad if I found out the hard way the 3.5 had to sit outside the ps3. Hmm...I guess I'll have to stick with the 60 gig. On newegg, the largest 2.5 sata 7200 rpm hd is only 100 gigs. I am cry
I've kind of got the next generation fever after reading this thread, but I just remembered that there is no way in hell my wife would let me drop the $1000 it would take to get up and running with one of these. I am tempted to snag an XBox360, or PS3 at the end of the development cycle before the next big thing comes out in four, or five years.
By making it ugly as possible, maybe they want to make money off of external drive kits. I'm leaning towards the PS3 for the console I buy next year. They have a lot of kinks, but they're set in terms of performance and content, especially with more time.
Do you need it to be 7200 rpm? If you're fine with 5400 rpm, the HDDs go up to about 160GB (for ~$160). They might be slightly slower, although I don't know if it would be all that noticeable. What all do you want to put on the HDD? If you have some media (music/video/pictures/etc.) that take up a lot of space, I think you could stick those on a USB HDD (or a regular HDD in a USB enclosure I guess), leaving just PS3-related stuff on the PS3 HDD (game saves, installed games, demos, etc). Not quite the best solution, but until larger HDDs start coming out, that might be the best one available. On another note... Seems like there are still some bugs with the browser though (it will crash occasionally on Youtube).
26 is a pretty relieving number actually. Any idea if any Houston stores will be getting larger allotments for sure? Ive called around here in College Station and Best Buy simply says they wont know until launch day. Im more than prepared to make the drive home if neccisary.
And also... Anyone know if a HDMI cable will make a difference for a 1080i TV? Or is it strictly at 1080p thing? Also, I believe HDMI carries audio/video. What cable would be needed to split the sound out to a receiver/surround sound? Next gen. So confusing... I totally understand all you Wii heads.
HDMI should make a difference in any resolution AFAIK (720p/1080i/1080p). I guess how much better would depend on the type of cables you have connected right now. HDMI carries a digital signal, so pretty much all cables get you the same results, while component cables carry an analog signal, which can vary depending on the cable. It does handle both audio and video, but that's about all I know in that regard. Someone with actual experience with this might be able to explain it. Regarding your other question, I don't know if Houston will get more for sure, but I would guess so. Also, I read somewhere that BB would probably receive more than 26 per store, at least if their marketshare is any indication (could receive 3-4 times that number and that would be about right).
Anyone know any possible way to get your hands on a PS3 without being able to wait in a line. I reserved one but they are saying its going ot be 2nd shipment and i reallyn eed one by friday....
Here's a post from GAF member. I wanted to say the exact same thing but my vocabulary and engrish skills are not up to par. "There is a strong bandwagon hatred for Sony in the specialist media industry right now, and I'm not really sure why. The hatred is rather extreme and seems rather unfounded. I mean, has Sony really killed your dog or slept with your wife? Some of the hate mongering is border-line ridiculous and annoying. While I fight for every consoles'/platforms' strengths to be heralded, rather than focusing on their respective shortcomings, doom and gloom scenarios, and artificial media wars, I can identify with many of the complaints against Sony and criticism is warranted to some extent, but not the extent to which it has manifested. I can see why Sony fans are pissed at sites like 1up, who are technically good at what they do but outwardly show a bias along the lines of what I just said. It's that overarching doubt and cynicism that going to overshadow all of their reviews and their general perspective on the console. I think Sony fans have a concern that the media/interweb is going to have a negative effect on the install base of their platform of choice, translating into fewer games and less people to play those games with--which is a legitamate concern. At the same time, I think Xbox and Nintendo fans should have access to many IPs that they didn't have in previous generations. But to want without compromise and rationality is more like reaching. To all the Xbox fans who want every PS3 exclusive to come to Xbox, but would never want an Xbox exclusive to go the other way...that is an example of hypocrisy the Sony fans would be quick to point out. The whole thing stinks of political smear campaigns, and is rather pathetic for an industry that, like any other, is supposed to be professional. At least, the people who always question why videogames as a genre of art, media, and expression aren't taken seriously should have there answer. Videogaming is a rather immature endeavor, even by the grown men and women players and professionals taking part. I've been doing a lot of observing on this board over the past year or so. I used to be a passionately hardcore gamer, but with time constraints of adult life, I find myself transforming into a casual one. And with that, I think I'm losing my connection with the ardent furvor displayed by each "side". To me, the videogame industry is in the worst state it has ever been in. Not because of the games or the technology, but because of the gamers, the media, the escalation of mob-mentality and taking sides, and the game companies that instigate the situation. Taking sides has been around since the 16-bit era, as everyone knows, but at that time the industry was much smaller and the problem had not escalated into an overwhelming paradigm. Enjoying games was still the focus of most discussion. That, apparently, is no longer the case."
Uh oh...Gamestop/Ebgames received their allotment and it's half what they predicted for launch. In other news, PS3 prices soar on ebay.
http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/content/nov2006/gb20061112_045318_page_2.htm Buying a PS3 isn't likely to get any easier for some time. Over the past year, production problems with the Blu-ray DVD players inside the PS3 had prompted Sony to repeatedly delay the release of the consoles and hold off announcing how many machines would be available worldwide. It's also forced the company to warn investors that the games business alone could lose as much as $1.68 billion in the fiscal year through March, 2007 (see BusinessWeek.com, 10/26/06, "Sony Accentuates the Positive").
Ahaha, I knew this would happen. Just like it did in 2000 with my PS2 preorder. I was going to go pay my PS3 preorder today off at Gamestop, good thing I didn't just yet. I'll be calling them later tonight for an update and to see if I fall under the first allotment.
