My brother was reading the economist and they said that less ps3 games were sold than systems purchased. I find that hard to believe, but I guess there must be thousands of ps3s waiting to be bought in auction right now overthere.
I haven't seen anything reporting that for the US launch, but in the first 48 hours (IIRC) after the PS3 went on sale in Japan, that appeared to be the case. 80+K systems were sold, while there were only like 60K-70K games sold (~30K for Gundam, ~30K for RR7, ~10K for Resistance, then the rest). The auctions don't help, but the library is pretty crappy too, at least for the average Japanese gamer. The best game is Resistance, an FPS which most Japanese gamers hate. The next best game is RR7, which has sold well (given the launch quantities). Gundam is a big name, but it sucks (as does Genji). The recent release of Mahjong PS3 might provide a bigger boost than most of the launch lineup in Japan. I believe the PS2 launch had similarly crappy numbers (for similar reasons basically), so they might be able to turn this around. In the US, I know that Resistance and Madden were the best-sellers. Depending on who was buying the PS3 to play, I would imagine software sales could be a little better than they were in Japan. If people w/o 360s were buying PS3s, they would probably like the lineup more than the Japanese (Madden, Tony Hawk, NBA 2K7, COD3, MUA, etc., along with Resistance). Otherwise, if most of the people who bought PS3s also had 360s, they probably wouldn't buy that many more games than the people in Japan (Resistance is probably the only game that would really justify a purchase, though the minor improvements in some of the other games might get some to double-dip). Again, the auctioning off of PS3s doesn't help software sales, and it is one reason why I don't particularly like it. We'll find out more in the next few weeks. FWIW, I think Sony shipped 40+K systems in Japan the week after launch. That seems pretty good, although I don't know if they can keep that up (as well as ship a similar, if not better, shipment here in the US every week).
I just finished hours of playing around with the PS3 Resistance is amazing, so much fun to play, but can be hard at times Marvel Ultimate Alliance is also great, fun to play with a couple of friends Ridge Racer blows Madden is same as 360 version call of duty is great, amazing graphics i didnt even bother touching NBA 07 ... i like skateboarding games and Tony Hawk 8 is not the best of em but a good one
I've only played an hour or so...but I like Resistance alot. Resistance starts out kinda meh/slow but it gets better. My brother who hates FPS games has been playing Resistance over Zelda TP. I'm holding back until my hdtv comes in next week. The graphics look good at 480i (to me anyways) and Im hoping I'll be awwwed by them @ 720p.
there's an overwhelming difference between playing a 360 on a regular tv vs. an hdtv so i'm assuming the ps3 should be no different. if you like the graphics now expect to be blown away later.
My bad, I forgot to say "in japan." The article was about Sony and their future, I haven't read it yet, I'll take a look later today.
Finally got some new pics of Resistance from some of the later levels. Note that these could contain some spoilers: Spoiler
I guess I should give some impressions of the system. Out of the box, set up is seemless. Internet was extremely easy to set up, although getting the type on web pages to a readable size took awhile. The predictive text is good, but theres no way I could use the ps3 for all my internet browsing without first getting a usb keyboard hooked up. I have two games, Resistance and NBA 2k7 Resistance: This game is incredible. The graphics are awesome, gameplay is fun, and the multiplayer is simply... outstanding. This is coming from a guy who formerly absolutely hated FPS on consoles. I am not a halo fan - I just never understood why everyone had such a boner for it. Resistance however has a different feel to it... hard to explain.. its just FUN! NBA 2k7: Graphics are crazy good. Gameplay is fun - I must also note that I stopped playing basketball games quite a few years ago - but nba 2k7 is a great time. Multiplayer is also a lot of fun. You shoot free throws by litereally taking the controller back and throwing it forward... just like you would shoot in real life. There is enough innovation and gameplay touches that make the replay value especially high. In conclusion, I bought two games that were both from genres I previously hated.. and both are extremely enjoyable. Sure there are great graphics and cool surround sound, but I cannot emphasize enough that the ps3 has given me nothing but good times. What more can you ask for than fun? If anyone has any questions on either of the games or the system, I would be happy to give informed answers.
RC, those are some badass pics. it just confirms everything I've heard that Resistance gets a LOT better past the 10 hour mark or so. I don't really trust all of the guys who say they just played it at Best Buy or a friend's house for a couple of hours (or less), that's not the good parts of the game imagine what Insomniac could have done if they didn't have to rush the game for launch! I'm waiting for downloadable updates/extras or the sequel
ps, rccola, what are some cool websites that have info on the ps3 and have a community? I want to see what other cool stuff I can do with it and find out what I am missing out on.
You will be awwwed at 720p, I just hooked up the HDMI cord and it makes a HUGE difference IMO. I was a little disappointed when I first played Resistance but you can see what everyone was talking about after hooking up the HDMI.
How easy is this? It seems like a good idea, but I think some reviewers noted that it was near-impossible to actually make FTs (taking the fun out of this feature). Maybe it gets easier the more you play with it. Also, what resolution did you play the game in? The game supports up to 1080p, but I think I read that some people were saying the framerate took a big hit in 1080p. If you played it in 1080p, did you notice anything like that? Here's a product wiki for the PS3: http://www.productwiki.com/sony_pla...laystation_3_everything_you_want_to_know.html It is a little outdated though I think. Plus, not much of a community. Insomniac recently set up a "myresistance" page which I guess can provide some sort of community: http://www.myresistance.net/index4.php It is still in Beta, so there might be some issues. Other than that, I just check out NeoGAF for most of the info on PS3. I guess there is a PS3 community there too, although I haven't really paid much attention to it since I don't have one. They've been toying with the idea of doing both things; I actually wonder how the game would have ended up if they designed the game from day one to support 720p @ 30 FPS (or, of course, 1080p @ 30/60 FPS had they been able to get that working). I guess online co-op (instead of just offline) could have been added, as well as vehicle support in multiplayer. I don't really care too much about co-op, but I know a lot of people were saying how awesome it was in Gears of War. I think Insomniac said both things would be difficult to implement due to some design issues though.
Is it that big of deal to not have the memory reader /flash reader thing thats on the 60GB. Can i live without it?
Do you have any Memory Stick Pro Duo, Compact Flash, or Standard Digital memory cards that you might want to use with the PS3? If you have pictures/videos/music/etc. on them that you want the PS3 to have easy access to, I suppose it could be useful. You can still use USB storage devices (hard drives, memory sticks, USB device that reads MS/CF/SD memory cards like the PSP, etc) to store and transfer data AFAIK. Personally, I don't really think much of it. It might be nice to have in some cases, but I don't think I'd be missing much without it. And even if I was, I should be able to easily get that functionality with the $500 PS3 through a USB adapter or something.
thanks for all the links and stuff. Regarding the free throws - you are supposed to push forward the controller once the ball gets to the top of each individual players shot... This is difficult because each player has a different shooting motion, some harder to measure than others and also its just plain... hard. I wouldnt believe most of the reviewers though... my friend hits all of his free throws consistently when I play him. You either have the natural talent to do it or put some practice into it.. but it can be done. I play everything on 1080i (I have a 65 inch widescreen at both school and at home, but both are about 4 or 5 years old) . I dont notice any slow down in the frame rate on 2k7, all I can say is that it looks amazing. One interesting note: Whenever I play resistance and have it on 1080i the game suggests that I change it to 720p... whenever I try to go back and change it to 720p, the screen looks real jacked up.... but when I change it back to 1080i and play the game, the game automatically uses 720p. I dont know if this is just my tv, but its interesting to note.
I think the official Linux operating system should now be available. Any news or sites of people toying with it yet?
Yellow Dog Linux 5.0, which appears to be the first Linux distro to be optimized for the PS3, will launch tomorrow, though you can't get it free from their public severs until about a month later.
