The Official PlayStation 3 Launch Thread

So that's all accurate, but doesn't really mean much. Note again what I said:

The people posting all the crap you just mentioned aren't the same people that I put much trust in. Unless you can find posts of Bebpo saying stuff like "The 360 sucks," "Gears of War sucks," "Gundam is awesome," etc., that I might have missed/forgotten.

And of course, some of their members are people within the industry, so it is hard not to put much stock into what they say.

Exaggerate much? Find me all the posts from all the PS3 early adopters that were saying that. I believe only Bebpo said that, although a few other people agreed with his general impressions from the game. DCharlie, for example, usually only went as far to say it is a "great game," or "awesome," or something to that nature (not sure if he ever finished the game though).

In any case, I don't really care what most of them said. There were only a few people in the thread that I was paying attention to, at least as far as opinions go. Bebpo was one of them, and he apparently had some really nice things to say about it.

Again, I don't know whether or not I'd agree with it. And I doubt anyone here can honestly say for sure whether he was over-exaggerating or not. Even if he was over-exaggerating, he's pretty much entitled to give his opinion on the game since he has actually played it quite extensively, which is more than I can say about anyone here (except for maybe Ziggy).

 

If you were talking about me, I haven't been defending the game. If anything, I might have been defending Bebpo, but that's about it.

I think I've said numerous times that I'll reserve any judgements involving how great I think the game is until I actually play it myself. However, I am interested to see people who share my interests give rave reviews about the game, but until I play the game myself, I won't know for sure whether it sucks, is an average game, or whether it is completely awesome (perhaps even GOTY-worthy).

As I said, only Bebpo (AFAIK) flat out said it was GOTY. You stated that all the PS3 early adopters were singing GOTY praises for Resistance in that thread, when in fact, only Bebpo stated it (again, AFAIK). The rest of the PS3 early adopters described Resistance in other terms (usually positive), but not GOTY. I think you exaggerated things just a bit in that regard (not that is matters much since most of this is about Bebpo's impressions).

Just thought I'd give some extra impressions from a professional reviewer who just finished the game. His descriptions of the game provided details that I don't believe were mentioned by any other reviewers, and of course his opinion on the game was something I found interesting (partly due how I view his opinions on games).

I think I've noted several times already that even I find his statements regarding Resistance a little hard to believe (at least the ones about best FPS/GOTY). Still, I do respect his opinion, and if the past is any indication, I may very well be sharing it whenever I get to play Resistance (although I'm not expecting that to happen).

You're trying to make it sounds like I find it perfectly normal that he called it GOTY. I'm probably about as skeptical about it as you guys, but I still found his overall impressions interesting.

I'm not even sure why you even brought up the state of GAF in the first place. I do agree with you that there is a lot of crap in the forums over there, just like there is a lot of crap in any forum (just check out the GARM right after a loss). That I agree with. Your statement about finding objectivity (or a lack their of) at GAF is something I don't agree with (and I explained why earlier).

Geez...what's with throwing in the PS3 early adopters again? I only posted Bebpo's final thoughts about the game (well, I added others too, but those were for illustrating another point).

As I said earlier though, I might tend to trust his opinion on a game over what most reviewers say just due past history. I might liken this to taking the side of some Rockets fan in the GARM instead of all the professional ESPN analysts (in this case, it usually pertains to the ability of Yao Ming, or something like that). It doesn't mean I'll end up liking the game just as much as he did, but I might end up sharing much of the same opinions about the game that he had versus the "popular opinion" given by most reviews.

Just to add more impressions for anything PS3-related. It isn't the first time I did so in this thread (or any thread really). The fact that Bebpo does review games professionally, and that he actually wrote out a detailed post concerning the gameplay of Resistance, I thought it would be a nice addition to the thread (especially since only one person on this BBS is actually playing the game, and he seems pretty busy playing it at the moment ). Plus, IIRC, some of the things he said (outside his GOTY/best FPS comments) were not mentioned in most reviews AFAIK (loading times for example), so I thought that would be a good thing to post for anyone curious about the game. Whether he said the game was a 0/10 or a 10/10, he did provide some details about the game that I think are useful for anyone wanting to play the game.

 

2M by X-mas in the states would be a pretty big bump up over what they said in the past. They've set a target of shipping a little over 2M WW by the end of 2006, and I doubt 2+M of that will be going to the US (Japan will get some love too, as will Canada to a lesser degree). I'd love to see that happen, but I doubt it will (especially since I'm having doubts they even hit their launch targets).

Not all TVs will accept HDMI. It is not really necessary. If you have component cables, or, for some reason, want to hook up your PS3 with composite cables, that will work fine. HDMI will offer the best quality though, and it will also allow you to play games and watch movies in 1080p (unless your TV is rare in that it accepts 1080p over component).

 

His post also contained the most info out of all the impressions I could find in that thread. I think only a few people have even beaten the game so far, so there wasn't much to pick from (especially from reliable posters, and someone who does reviews for a somewhat major game site is about as reliable as you can get). Unless you wanted me to post something as informative as this:

It just so happened that the most detailed impressions (practically a review) in the thread also pegged the game as GOTY. Sorry, I guess I should have waited a week for a similar one that just called it the 3rd best FPS ever.

I've been more or less agreeing with you since the first post, at least as far as Bebpo's comments on Resistance being GOTY. Not sure how you thought otherwise.

Didn't really think I was trying to defend it, at least the GOTY/Best FPS parts. I sort of defended Bebpo to a degree, although only in expressing how he's been right in the past (at least IMO). Since I haven't played Resistance, I don't really have any way of defending what he said about the game.

I have no idea what we're discussing either. I never really disagreed with you regarding your criticisms of his impressions, but you kept bringing it up over and over again, and I kept restating my opinion on it.
