Wish I could give more details and info, but Im waiting to purchase an HDTV before I open mines up and start playing.
Is getting a 60GB PS3 that much more crucial than getting a 20GB? Obviously 40GBs is a HUGE difference but how much space are you going to need with this thing? Is the 20GB enough to save most of your games? What will I not be able to do with the 20GB?
If you are going to install a lot of games on the HDD, then the 20GB HDD won't last you long (some games will take up 4-5GB after installation). Rather than going from 20 to 60GB though, I'd rather get a 100+GB HDD off of Newegg for ~$100 and just use that (especially one with 16MB of cache, so even faster load times). And if someone gets 3.5" HDDs working (well better than it is working now), then... If that isn't a big deal, you can probably stick with the 20GB HDD. The demos and PSN downloads might get kind of big, but you might be able to manage that (360 owners have been able to ). The save files don't take up that much space AFAIK. And if you want to use the PS3 to play your media, you can always use a USB HDD or something to store you music, videos, images, etc.
In any case 20GB is probably too small. And if you plan on using the system to store other media then it can really fill up quick. But that is probably not the biggest worry, like RC said you can EASILY upgrade that HD. The biggest factors for me were the wireless internet connection built in and silver trim. Wireless means less cables and for 99 extra its really worth it. The silver trim seems like a cheesy reason. Probably is... But it looks so slick! The extra card ports are intriguing too but that just depends on the users plans for their system.
I've been pondering that as well. Not necessarily as a MythTV recorder (there's no tuner obviously), but as a MythTV front end, while the actual recorder sits in a different room. That would be ****ing awesome. Since I've been pondering for about 18 months now on building a mythTV box (been really waiting until someone decides to come up with a Tuner Card with CableCard inputs.), once I have it built, have a PS3, and if this actually gets done (and I don't see why not), then I will so get rid of my DVR
Anyone know of any cheap bluetooth keyboards? Gonna be awesome sitting on the couch, pulling a keyboard from under the coffee table and checking out clutchfans without having to move! Hell even the system turns on by remote. That whole PS3 to record thing is nuts too. Hope it gets done. Unlimited HD space to record Rockets games...
It wouldn't be the PS3 recording, you'd have a PC set up somewhere else set up as your recorder/server. PS3 would just be pulling the video off that server (which would still be awesome)
There are USB TV tuners out there, so I would think the PS3 could be used as a recorder as well. I don't have any experience with MythTV or USB TV tuners, so your method might be better. It should be still be possible though (AFAIK).
I've got to say I'm a little surprised at some of the negative reviews the PS3 is getting. Who would have thought it would be Microsoft that is the one with the edge in making things user-friendly and Sony is the one delivering slapped-together stuff in desperate need of patches? http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/20/arts/20game.html
why? because many including myself were not impressed with the ps3 remember my previous thread i was giving my honest oppinion and i got flamed by rc cola (sony rep) .
I didn't flame you for your opinion. I just said that you probably shouldn't base you overall opinion on the PS3 based on NBA 07. That would be like saying the 360 is unimpressive ("Xbox 1.5" perhaps) after playing King Kong, Quake IV NBA Live (either one), Amped 3, THAW, Blazing Angels, etc., without even touching Gears of War, Ghost Recon, Oblivion, Dead Rising, PGR3, etc. It certainly does appear as though the PS3 was rushed to launch as evident by the numerous software issues (which will hopefully be fixed in a firmware upgrade, similar to some of the updates the 360 had after launch). I don't really think they're that big of a deal, but combined with some other small things (lack of HD cables in the box, inability to download in the background, etc.), I can't say the launch has been all that great. It wouldn't have come close to meeting the hype regardless since most of the hype was centered on the processing power of the PS3, and as I said in the other thread, it will probably take a year or so for that advantage to be clearly shown. That said, the PS3 launch could have gone a lot better (the scaling issues are just plain stupid). Of course, there were some positives from the launch, which includes things that the PS3 can do that the 360 can't (and probably won't ever do, unlike some of the things the PS3 can't do that the 360 can). Within hours after the launch, a fully functional Linux OS was running on the PS3, and NES/MAME emulators were shown shortly thereafter. Installation of HDDs has apparently been a breeze, and no major issues have arisen. USB devices such as headsets, cameras, iPods, M+KBs, Eyetoy cameras, and even Logitech controllers have all provided functionality on the PS3 (the last one surprises me). The web browser seems to work fine with sites like Youtube, which is awesome (on the downside, the browser does seem really buggy). And the PS3 is BC with 95+% of the titles released on the PS1 and PS2 (of course, there are some notable games with big issues). I don't know...the PS2 launch was somewhat disappointing too IIRC (at least the games were, in comparison to what was out on the DC). The media is a little less lenient of them this time around though, especially with a much bigger competitor in Microsoft. At least Sony knows the pressure is on them now (in case they were too arrogant to realize it before hand).
here's a story for you Craiglisters the 1 am meet should have given him a clue. link to story Local Man Pepper-Sprayed Over PS3s Last Edited: Monday, 20 Nov 2006, 7:38 AM PST Created: Monday, 20 Nov 2006, 7:38 AM PST LA PALMA, Calif. -- An LA man is out two PlayStations and recovering from a pepper spray attack after a late night attempt to sell the game consoles went sour. Police say the victim advertised on Craigslist that he had two PS3’s to sell together for $5,000. But when he went to meet two potential buyers outside a fast food restaurant in La Palma this morning at 1:00, the men pepper sprayed him and stole the game consoles. Police say the victim, a man in his 20’s, was treated by paramedics at the scene
that sucks good thing he didnt get shot or even killed , i had made mutiple tranactions on craigslist before and i always had 2 friends loaded around me while making the tranactions one friend would be 10 feet away while the other would be on his truck with engine running if the deal goes sour.
Looks like the newest PSP firmware that allows for connectivity with the PS3 will be released soon. Here are some details: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/psp/current/index.html So I guess I have to get a PS3 before I can play PS1 games on the PSP...kind of expected, but I was hoping they'd let you do it via the PSP or the PC (maybe that will be added later down the line). About time...can't believe we got a web browser, RSS feeds, LocationFree player support, etc., before this was addressed. They better add it to the PS3 soon too (AFAIK, it does the same thing). I hope Sony adds as much stuff to the PS3 via firmware updates as they have with the PSP...they kind of need it.
