Debbie Downer...wa wa waaaaa. In all seriousness, I agree that opposing defenses will go nuts if we have the likes of Bush, Johnson, Mathis at the same time. All can catch and they're all elusive.
so do we pick up reggie mcneal w/ one of our later picks? this guy didn't have the O-line at A&M that vince had at UT, and yet he still managed to pick up yards. i say we draft him, and groom him to replace carr. any backers?
Your not impressed with 6.2 yd/carry? Not impressed with over 300 total yards? I'm not impressed with the fact that USC didn't use him more.
That says volumes that they went with their other running back during the clutch parts of the biggest game of the year. If Bush can't run on the Texas def how will he run on pro defenses?
I was listening to a caller. . . he said a coaching friend of his scouted bush . . . much earlier this year. . and the 1st thing the coach said was "That guy doesn't like to be hit" The question is: Can bush be PHYSICAL? Rocket River
you take out that one touchdown rush of 26 yards, he had 12 carries for 56 yards, that's 4.6 yards a carry....that's not impressive considering he really couldn't get anything going outside on the perimeter against texas, and that's where reggie likes to make his living. if he can't get yards on a consistent basis against a good college defense, how's he going to get it in the pros? he was used properly last night, lendale white was running hard and aggressive and was the best running back on the field last night. reggie bush has a ton of talent but i worry a lot about his mental toughness and poise. after that idiotic fumble last night he wasn't the same player the rest of the night. he let that one play effect his performance for the rest of the game. and i think last night's decision by pete carroll not to use him on that big 4th down play should be somewhat of a warning sign about bush....is he tough enough to get your team 2,3 yards when you need it running up the middle? and let's face it, that happens A LOT in in the NFL. i still think bush is a terriffic talent, but he isn't the greatest running back in the history of football or even college football. he has weaknesses and they were highlighted last night.
Yeah, but you can't take out that spectacular run because it's part of the game and it's what Reggie does best. Otherwise, we would take out the best play every game and then determine averages. And of course, every player does not want to be hit. I'm sure Reggie would rather run it 80 yards in the open field than be hit and stopped. But did you see the smack he laid on the Longhorn defenders at the sideline when he faced up and drove the defenders back about 5 yards before he was pushed out of bounds. Bush isn't afraid of contact. And remember Marcus Allen. Nobody hardly ever got a good lick on Marcus........because he had the ability to twist and turn and slide off those hard tackles. Bush has that ability. The point is, he had one hundred and seventy some yards of offense from the line of scrimmage and he had an off game and the whole defense was keyed up to stop him. The Longhorns even admitted as much. Translate those numbers to the NFL and you have a fella that rushes for 1200 and receives for around 1500 yards in a 16 game season. That's if he has 16 off games in the NFL. Not to mention, how many of White's yards do you think he would have gotten without Bush out there spreading and dividing the defense? Put White on the Texans and he's another Domanick Davis with teams keying on our run, jamming defenders in the box and closing it down. Yeah, he may still plow for 1000+ but we ain't winning many games. If the Texans draft Bush and put him in the backfield with Domanick, Domanicks' average yards per rush will go up to around 5 yards per carry because the defense will have to account for Bush every play. And if the defense commits to stopping Dominick, Bush is going to eat their lunch flaring out of the backfield. It's a pick your poison situation. We witnessed it in the Rose Bowl. The Longhorns focused on shutting down Reggie. Lendale and Leinart had a field day. One small adjustment of keeping Reggie on the field as a decoy and Lendale running for the first on 4th and 2 and we are all crying in our milk today because we lost and hoping Vince will come back to Austin next year because he will actually be able to dominate with Leinart and Bush graduating. Don't get me wrong. I'd love to have Young. I'd love to see the Texans be able to get that kid. He's amazing. But we can't afford to draft him and not get Bush. If we have to choose between them, we've got to take Bush. We already have a QB with a rifle arm, tremendous toughness, and the ability to call his own plays from the line of scrimmage and check off to the right plays, and scramble a little bit. Yeah, I'd be willing to trade him to New Orleans for their #2 pick. But it ain't happening. We gotta take Bush and win our 9 games next year. You heard it from me first. If we draft him, and he stays healthy, we will win at least 9 games next year.
i know you take EVERY single play into account, but as you know, sometimes AVERAGES are skewed by one play. a guy can be held to about 3 yards a carry then bust a 40 yarder then boost that average to 5 yards a carry and that doesn't accurately depict the entire game on the ground. lendale white's longest rush was 15 yards, and he STILL averaged over 6 yards a carry. that is extremely indicitive of how well he was running compared to bush. yes, bush still had a good game, i don't think any rational human being can deny that, but this guy was being touted as the greatest college running back EVER! the best running back EVER gets the ball on a 4th and 2 to seal the game....he didn't.
I know this board is a Texas lovefest, but it's not like they were the best defensive team in the nation. They ranked 33rd in rush defense. 33rd! Not that it changes anything...
^^^ i think that may fuel the fire a little bit more...texas has a very good defense, but still nowhere near the type of defense he will see in the pros. he couldn't have a great, heisman type of game against texas, the probablity of him putting up 400 total yards against a pro team looks less likely.
Bush did have a good game and didnt' get shut down. Like people have said he averaged over 6 yards a carry. What scares me is Pete Carroll prefering to go with White over Bush. That should never happen to the top pick in the NFL draft.
Of course we are talking about Coach Fredo. And for anybody that cares, see my breakdown of Bush vs. Young here: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?p=2139513#post2139513
Its the same thing the Chargers did with Drew Brees. The Texans can franchise him and if a team wants to match that offer they have to give up a first round pick for him since Carr went in the first round. This might be the best way to keep Carr since the tag is only for one season. If he sucks again in 06 you can let him walk in the offseason.
