I meant the CONCACAF teams from North and Central America in the Libertadores. Pretty soon a North American cup will emerge... you will see MLS teams in it. There's already a "Campeon de Campeones" cup.
Oh Roy Keane, He' s A Demon He Wears A Demon' s Hat Coz' When He Saw Old Trafford He Said "I Fancy That" The Rest All Tried To Sign Him But He Chose The Red And White Of World Famous Man United Coz' We' re Always Dynamite Glory, Glory Man united Glory, Glory Man united Glory, Glory Man united And The Reds Go Marching On!
CONCACAF already has a Champions League that includes MLS. If I'm not mistaken a Costa Rican club won this year. I don't know why they'd make a North American cup.
Roy Keane is an old, dirty player who is over the hill, and who got dominated by Effenberg when Bayern won the Champions League.
I'd like you to tell that to his face. While Keano is on the way down, in his prime he was the best midfielder in the world, no doubt about it. No one could take a match by the neck and completely control the midfield like Roy in the 90s.
They've built an incredible team out of EPL and La Liga castoffs. If they can keep up with the great signings, they'll be a Spanish powerhouse for years to come. Now, here's hoping that a similar thing happens with Kezman and Saviola at Athletico de Madrid
Group fixtures Not to derail the thread, but in case anyone was interested in things other than which soccer figure is a p.o.s. If I had to vote it would be a tie between Torsten Fringes,"Referee" Hugh Dallas and any Arsenal player with more red cards than goals.
Quarterfinals of the 2002 WC. USA vs. Germany. What I meant to say is I have a problem with Torsten Fringes left hand. Hugh Dallas is such a prima donna on the pitch it's not even funny.
http://worldcup.espnsoccernet.com/report?match=48865&lang=us In the 49th minute, a shot by American Gregg Berhalter bounced off German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn and hit the left arm of German defender Torsten Frings, who was standing on the goal line. Scottish referee Hugh Dallas did not call a hand-ball on Frings. While Dallas might not have seen Frings touch the ball, even if the referee had, he would not be obligated to issue the United States a penalty kick. According to Law 12 of the International Football Association Board's Laws of the Game, the rulebook for soccer: "A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player ... handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area). ... A penalty kick is awarded if the above offense is committed by a player inside his own penalty area, irrespective of the position of the ball, provided it is in play.'' However, if in the referee's opinion the ball hit Frings' arm inadvertently, then he need not make a call, as a later note explains: "If the ball strikes the defender accidentally, no offense is committed.''
I'm sorry for bringing this up. This thread was supposed to be about the CL and I'm helping with the derailing of this thread. Now if someone wants to start an offficial 2006 WC thread, even though it's not until next July, I will gadly reply to SJC post.
I'm making my first trip to Europe late-September/Early October...will the schedule start by that point and is it at all possible to get reasonably priced walk up tickets for any match? Seeing a game is very high on the list of things to do...just don't know if a backpacking american has any chance of setting foot in the stadium (i.e. are all tickets in the hands of season ticket holders?). Any advice would be huge.
I think you should be able to get a ticket. The schedule will have started by that point. Most tickets will be in the hands of season ticket holders, but there are some games which might have less attendance - as an example, I could have imagined that in Bayern's old stadium, something like Bayern vs. Brügge would not have been sold out (it probably will be in the new Allianz-Arena, though, they have already sold out almost every Bundesliga game until then). Which teams are you interested in?
