Really? Have you watched this show? Yeah, I agree that lately he seems to be a little pansy when it comes to the Holly situation, but royally sucks? When did it become the cool thing to hate on The Office?
Exactly. His character has been developed as supremely idiotic and awkward since the very first season. Specifically: Season 1 + Diversity Day with the nationalities taped on their foreheads; + The basketball one where he sucks and calls the game over a foul; Season 2 + The Dundees- need I say more? + His birthday and being upset that Kevin was getting more attention due to the possible skin cancer thing + The Booze Cruise Season 3 + The new employees episode + Many others I can't even think of Season 4 + The one with kidnapping the pizza kid + Several episodes with Jan They set him up this way so that the few times he actually does the right thing, makes a smart decision, or feels genuine remorse (e.g. getting the govt. contract at the Chili's with Tim Meadows, upset over having to fire that guy on Halloween), it really stands out. This is the same thing they did with Archie Bunker's character- they made him so unlikeable that the few times he showed understanding/compassion, it made you really sit up and take notice. Again, no offense against 30 Rock because it is genuinely funny, but it's almost that they're more like cartoon characters, like Scrubs. You laugh at them immediately but there's not much substance. Hey, I could be wrong, but that's why The Office is real. Steve Carrell does such a good job that you almost can see him as the high school-turned-workplace geek- and believe me, I've worked with managers who are not too far off from some of his traits. If you've ever seen him in other movies, specifically Little Miss Sunshine where he's a morose, suicidal character, you know that he does a great job on this show and the only reason he hasn't won an Emmy is that Alec Baldwin is just outstanding in that 30 Rock role (although Carrell did win a Golden Globe). Haven't you all ever had a manager like this?
I don't hate on the office, just steve carrell. Take Stanleys character for instance. He is ALWAYS great. Dwight is over the top, but yet he can still remain funny. The only one consistently not funny is Micheals. The only time he brings a laugh is when he is the butt of the joke. Sadly, that is no often compared to how much time he gets. He reminds me of Jim Carrey. Both are one dimensional actors. Movies like Dumb and Dumber revolve around that particular acting style, and its great. The Office is not geared towards silly-stupid.
Its funny how people who hate the Office are the ones that consistently watch it... STOP WATCHING IF YOU HATE IT SO MUCH...
I thought the previous episodes were alright. I think waiting a week for another new episode sets expectations very high that are unrealistic to match all the time. I prefer to watch a whole season in sitting if my ass can muster it. It adds better synergy to all the episodes that makes a better experience in my opinion.
Them haters can get the heck out. The Office is still my favorite show on t.v. I said this in the Season 4 thread before, but I'll say it again. What is so great about the show is that you really identify with it's characters. I see a little bit of myself in Jim, a little in Dwight, and a little in Andy. Andy has become one of my fave characters lately.
So I guess thousands of Clutchfans must be females for b****ing at the Rockets? Last I checked, this was a discussion thread for the Office. Who says we hate the Office? I'm sure anyone who has voiced their displeasure of the Office were at one point, very big fans. Hell, I still watch the Office every week but I don't have to be a sheep and enjoy every episode. Not every one can be a hit. Anyways, I guess you can't say anything negative at all about the show without being a hater. How familiar . It's just a freaking show. Stop getting all hell bent just because some people happened to voice negative opinions about the Office.
QFT. calm down. 30 rock has been more consistent this season, I dont think anyone can argue with that.
considering our troubles, our position in west isn't as bad as it could be but lets be civil and not drag the abomination known as the GARM into the hangout like i said, a lot of you guys come in week after week and just trash the office for what it's not.... instead of giving praise to what it is, if you dislike the show so much, please head for the exit, otherwise, keep your mouth shut... just like mama said "if ya aint got nuttin nice to say, dont say nuttin, ya digg?"
Standard Internet Procedure. Must get in the dissenting opinion on things that are popular. You get used to it.
Im probably one of the biggest office fans on here. I dont trash the office on a weekly basis. you gotta recognize. i dont have blind admiration for the show. I watch it every week religiously, but that doesn't mean its automatically good. this is a discussion board, not a praise-only board. Its also not the "Office Season 5 approval thread." We are being civil, some people are just too sensitive about the show.
One-dimensional actors? Obviously you haven't seen Little Miss Sunshine or Man in the Moon. Just because they happen to do well in the goofball roles doesn't mean they are one-dimensional. Even within The Office, Michael's character is far from 1-dimensional. In The Client, Halloween, The Dinner Party, the Booze Cruise, and several others, his character exhibits various different emotions. Go watch those again and you'll see what I'm talking about. And he is funny, as well- if you don't think his "Never do anything to anyone, ever, at any time, at any place..." speech to CFO Wallace isn't funny, well, then, that's your prerogative. Respectfully disagree- great actor and character. And the Office is absolutely partially geared towards silly-stupid. How do you explain Jim's pranks on Dwight? Or Andy, for that matter? Almost all of the humor on Dwight is that he's a big-time butt of jokes. So, I mean, you can dislike the Michael Scott character, but you can't use the argument that you don't like him because "he's the butt of all jokes" and say you like Dwight's character- doesn't make any sense. Hey, it's all personal preference. A lot of people couldn't stand Archie Bunker, Costanza, Kramer, Latka, Norm, JJ Dynomite, and Ralph Furley, either. Way more than that liked em, though- same with Michael Scott.
Completely agree. Last season we saw the serious side of Michael when Stanley yelled at him ("Did I stutter?!") and Michael sat him down at the end of the episode and told him that he couldn't talk to him like that. It was completely out of his normal character and added depth (in my opinion) and kept him from being that one-dimensional idiot boss. It happened again this season in the episode where Michael, Andy, and Oscar went to Canada. When Michael hung up on David Wallace after telling him that it was really crappy that he transferred Holly, that was a very real moment that I am sure many viewers could relate to. The heart of Michael came out there, and I damn sure felt his pain. I also find it ironic that Space Ghost calls Michael one-dimensional, yet praises Stanley. If there is any character that is one-dimensional on the show, it is Stanley. He is fantastic as the bored, unhappy, older salesman... but there isn't much depth to him. I'm sure I'm coming off as someone who is blindly supporting the show, but you know what... it's my favorite show so I'm going to stick up for it when I feel it is being unfairly criticized.
Its 30 rock. if you've give the show a shot, then you'd know its not crap. Theres a reason why 30 Rock keeps winning emmys.
