Exclusive: B.J. Novak Takes 'Office' Leave Nov 12, 2008, 03:54 PM | by Michael Ausiello Further proof the U.S. economy is in the crapper: It appears layoffs are looming at Dunder Mifflin. Sources confirm to me exclusively that Office actor-writer B.J. Novak is taking a leave of absence from the show to appear in Quentin Tarantino's latest film, Inglourious Basterds. NBC declined to comment, but a Peacock insider says Novak asked producers for the time off and they obliged. But exactly how much time off he'll be getting is subject to some debate. According to one insider, Novak will be MIA for "several episodes" but will return later this season. Another source, however, says Novak may be done with The Office for good, at least as a performer. "He may write more episodes," whispers my mole, "but as far as playing Ryan, I think he's ready to move on." It's unclear how Novak's absence will be explained on screen, but making Ryan a victim of the current recession would be the logical way to go -- particularly if you-know-who returns to Scranton and decides she wants her old receptionist job back (hint, hint). That raises the question: Would Pam's return to Dunder Mifflin cushion the blow of losing Ryan? And what if Novak is gone for good -- can The Office weather the loss? http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2008/11/bj-novak-leavin.html
Ryan Howard was the most overrated character on that show, IMO. Boring! What did he add to the show, except for being the butt of Michael's homoerotic comments and Kelly's "How dare you!" comments. He was lame, and he won't be missed at all. Every other minor character besides the big 4 (Michael, Dwight, Jim, Pam) has something great or funny about them- Tobe, Stanley, Creed, Kelly, etc. as Kevin would say, "Ryan Howard? Two thumbs down!"
Wow...tonights show was a bit of a downer. Probably the closest it's ever come to being a drama. That said, it set up a lot of things to happen in the following episodes. Spoiler How many of you girlie boys got teary eyed when Pam made her return? C'mon...let me see some hands. "A man needs intercourse."
Even though there was more sex talk in this episode than usual, which makes it weirdly uncomfortable, it was a good episode overall. I had never seen that side of Andy before.
i'm glad they brought pam back. first of all, she needs to be on camera more, and secondly, unlike most people i like pam and jim together. i don't watch sitcoms to feel bad about the characters, and keeping pam and jim apart just makes you feel bad for them and it doesn't really seem to add anything. they still pretty much act the same and pull the same pranks as a couple. as for ryan leaving, i like his character but you're not really missing out on anything if he isn't there. and any sentence by andy that includes "beer me" is always hilarious.
The scenes with Andy and Oscar in the bar were tremendous. "You'll be thanking me when they are spankin' thee"
Andy Bernard is my favorite. So many great moments in last night's episode. I didn't really find it to be a downer at all.
I laughed more in this episode than I remember laughing in any other ones this season. Mainly because I like the Temp, I think. I would not like him leaving. The push-ups were one of the more hilarious things I've seen. "Do you want me to do more push-ups?"
That was one classic line right there good stuff all round. Michael getting to say his peace at the end kind of grounded everything which was kind of cool
