Read the second Lincoln quote in post #48. Bush acted as... and maybe convinced himself... that he was privy to Divine will. Once you start thinking and doing for God, only disaster can follow because we are not God... and that particularly applies to all who seek power over others.

bigtexxx, why am I not surprised, Barrack Hussein not

going to church, is consistent with him sitting in front of

reverend Wright for 20+years, and never heard the

phrase"God damn America" coming out of the Holy

    Reverend's mouth.

if thats the biggest lie he ever tells, then the next 4 years should be great.

maybe he had more imporant things to do....like getting ready to become president.

This makes it sound as though going to church is not important. For a lot of people, it is.

I think it would be better to say that he had other important things to do.

Privy to Divine will? Thinking and doing for God?

Those are the utmost unflattering characterizations of Bush's spiritual life that could be gotten. Are you saying he is a megalomaniac? I am mainly impressed that Bush admitted to seeking God's will not defining it as you imply. Nor do I see a Jim Jones candidate in his so-called "privileged" communication with God. I think you were a little harsh here...

I particularly love Lincoln's last conceding line about how complex the matters are; I guess you would disagree with that when it comes to Bush's tenure though, huh? ;)

Perhaps they've never been more complex.

President George Bush has claimed he was told by God to invade Iraq and attack Osama bin Laden's stronghold of Afghanistan as part of a divine mission to bring peace to the Middle East, security for Israel, and a state for the Palestinians.

    ...

And "now again", Mr Bush is quoted as telling the two, "I feel God's words coming to me: 'Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East.' And by God, I'm gonna do it."

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2005/oct/07/iraq.usa

One of the delegates, Nabil Shaath, who was Palestinian foreign minister at the time, said: "President Bush said to all of us: 'I am driven with a mission from God'. God would tell me, 'George go and fight these terrorists in Afghanistan'. And I did. And then God would tell me 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq'. And I did."

Mr Bush went on: "And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, 'Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East'. And, by God, I'm gonna do it."

Clearly, going to Church and not going to Church are perfectly consistent!

Why are these non-practicing "Christians" concerned with why someone they have never met did or did not attend service on Christmas?

Aside from the AIDS thing (which I don't blame him for believing because of the Tuskegee experiments), Wright's speech was dead on

Maybe he was home, dancing with his girls, to the tasteful song, popularized by Rush Limbaugh and a leading candidate for the new chair of the RNC, that is set to Puff the Magic Dragon. Maybe?

I see Major beat me to the response. I'm certain more anecdotes will come out in the next year or so and I don't see how one can look objectively at the actions of this administration and not reach the conclusion that God's will as revealed to W and probably manipulated by Cheney (and aligned with current Republican leadership thinking) became more important than the Constitution and the national interest of the United States..

No, I very much agree, which is why I find the simplistic approach exhibited by the current administration so appalling. We would be in much better shape if W. had thought about a few things instead of reacting from his gut.

Hard to say they've never been more complex... I don't think our well being is as threatened as during the Civil War, the Revolution or the Great Depression/WWII, but it's safe to say that they are significantly more complex than they would be if we had a half-way capable President who understood he was President for all Americans and the leader of the free world.

I didn't attend church on Christmas.

Neither did about 70% of Americans (I would guess).

There goes Obama, siding with the majority again.

Good for you...this is the kind of stupidity that the people in charge of this country are absolutely counting on.

I think you would guess wrong.

Rassmussen poll shows 58% planned on going to church on Christmas

I am not a weekly church attendee. I did go on Christmas Eve.

The Rassmussen poll is the only one I could find. Gallup did not take a poll on the topic.

What do the "youngsters" say? Meh.

I'm sure lots of people have felt that leading. He just happens to be the president of the US and he just happened to have to go through the US congress to get money for the fight.... or he could have declared Martial Law I suppose....
