First off, you would never have to say "no Negro" if you are white or a non-brown skin person. Many people who are not African-American, will clearly tell you that they are not and where they are from if you assume that they are African-American, and no one gets offended. Even people that are considered African-American, but may be mixed with another or many other ethnicities will sometimes clarify to you what their racial makeup actually is if you call them African-American. Just because they identified that they are not African-American, either because they are not or don't want to be classified that way, their assertions is not offensive to African-American people. I have said it before and will continue to say it, being "gay" or "homosexual" or whatever term is politically correct for people who only want to date people of the same sex, is NOT equivalent to being a certain race. Not everyone has even accepted that being gay is NOT a choice and that people are born that way. Many people still consider it to be a choice, just like a person can also choose to be celibate, no matter if they like to have sex with both males and females. As a single straight male, it is very important for me that eligible women know that I am not gay. Many women do not like to date gay or bisexual men, that is a fact, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with their choice of who they want to date and have sex with. If I want to be in the population of possible choices for them, and I happen to make a statement that could be possibly considered one to be made by a male that is gay or bisexual, it is perfectly fine for me to say "but I'm not a homosexual", without it being offensive to "gay" or "homosexual" people. Everytime a "gay" or "homosexual" person comes out and says that they are such, it doesn't offend heterosexual people. So why does the equivalent of a person saying that I'm heterosexual offend non-heterosexual people? It shouldn't. So it is not being "insecure" in your masculinity or manhood to make it clear that you are not "gay" or "homosexual", especially in a society and media that is overblowing the situation larger than it is. Discriminating against gay people is not equivalent to identifying that you are not one of them. If gay people didn't feel the need to announce to the world that they are "gay" or "homosexual", maybe that would help some. When a straight man or woman goes around bragging that they are heterosexual, people look at them crazy like why are you telling me your sexual preferences? What if athletes started holding press conferences to announce that they are heterosexual? It would get pretty ridiculous. And please don't equate this to being black, you don't have to announce it, everyone can see it. You don't see different religious groups acting all offended if someone says that they are not them. For example, when the Sikhs had that terrible mass shooting and they pointed out that they are not Muslims, you didn't see muslims jumping up and down as if they were slandered because the Sikhs pointed out that they are not muslims because they look similar to muslims to some people. If you want to say this all stims around him saying "homo" vs "homosexual", I say that is petty and ridiculous. I think what Roy said was innocent and he was trying to be funny. I understand that the NBA is trying to be sensitive to their fan base and take things to levels that normal people in society wouldn't. That being said, I think that a $75,000 fine is excessive. A simple statement that they don't condone it and the apology by Roy should have been enough to be "politically correct". I think the fine is only so because of the over blown media hype that is totally unnecessary.
Um, it makes sense he got fined because the NBA is associated with the WNBA...and they're mostly lesbians
This is not a big deal! I'm more offended about the NBA stealing $75,000 from him than I am Roy Hibbert saying something stupid... Where has the 1st amendment gone? Yeah, He said something stupid. Guess what? He has the right to say stupid things! Not to mention, everyone is saying this is a bigger deal now that Jason Collins is out... Well what about the entire sports world constantly making fun of Tim Tebow because of his lifestyle? If youre gonna fine someone for saying "no homo" than you should fine people that mock tebows prayer. I realize that it's different sports, but there's not a chance that Stern would fine someone for that kind of thing! And he shouldn't, nor should he fine someone for saying "no homo"
I didn't watch the video, and haven't heard exactly what he said...but I guarantee you I don't give a crap! It's a saying. I used it when I was in high school. People need to stop being so damn sensitive and if they don't like something, CHANGE THE CHANNEL.
Also, why is "homo" offensive? It's short for "homosexual" which is the correct word to use when referring to gay people.... I get it when it's used as an insult, but saying "no homo" isn't really an insult... At least I don't think it is.
This has nothing to do with the 1st amendment as nobody is trying to take his right to say anything. I'm okay if the NBA didn't fine Hibbert, but it isn't like anyone's 1st amendment is danger because of a fine in this case.
How is this not taking away his first amendment? He used speech that a offends gay people, and he got fined $75,000 dollars... He got punished for his speech. Serious question... Do you think stern would fine a player that comes out and expresses his disagreement with Jason Collins' lifestyle? I'm not sure.
I just gave you an instance. I'm online. I type something. You have no way of knowing my ethnicity. I say "no negro" to eliminate any suggestion or idea that I might be black. That sound ok to you? If it does, you need to get your head examined. No r****d.
Added: Look, I'm Asian and if someone said "Man, I love egg rolls, no Asian." How the hell would I be offended? This is basically what Roy Hibbert did!
Good point, but what if someone said "Man, I love fried chicken, no negro" would have to be twice as offensive?
Pretty sure this isn't the reason he got fined. Referring to the press as "mother****ers" is probably the bigger reason.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." There is no law that says Roy Hibbert can't say "no homo", regardless of how moronic he sounds when doing it. That said, there is no law that says the NBA has to let Roy Hibbert say whatever the hell he wants if it feels the comments represent the image of the NBA poorly. The NBA is not congress. It can make rules that state its employees aren't allowed to say racist or homophobic things and can fine them if they do.
