I would prefer somebody who is not presently serving on City Council. What made Bill White great is his business savvy. I lament that there isn't anybody of his ilk this go around.
My personal opinion of her is lower than her track record as a public servant. Don't take my comments to reflect anything on how you should vote. Locke has a solid chance at my vote if Parker slips, though. Brown is a no go.
I've started to look more at the mayoral election, and, on the chance that someone else has as well, I thought I'd revive the thread. After reading a bit on everyone, I'm feeling rather disappointed. I don't think any of them are likely to maintain the level of leadership we got from Bill White. No one is inspirational, so I'm trying to choose which one will best keep the boat steady until someone else can show up on the scene. Not an ideal place to be.
My $0.02 after seeing the candidates for the first time in tonight's TV debate: Parker - kinda sounded like a bragger Brown - name dropped Bill White too much, too old Locke - didn't wow me, ok I guess Morales - said "liberals in Washington"...NEXT
I am totally unimpressed with this crop. I suppose by default I'd vote for Parker, but her ads where she says she won't fund "stadiums" we don't need pissed me off. The Dynamo Stadium is the best deal out of all the stadium deals so far. It'll beautify a part of downtown that needs some work. I want that stadium.
Please do. California had washed up p*rn stars run for governor, why can't Houston have a washed up "country singer" run for mayor? Maybe BatmanJones could start the "Vote for Fatty" facebook group?
This crop is so unimpressive, I may even vote for you. Actually, this is a great reason to vote for Brown. Incumbents usually win, so we may well be picking the mayor for the next 6 years. I don't want any of these guys for the next 6 years, so picking one that will die in 2 gives us another chance to vote without an incumbent in the race.
The hilarious thing was the moderator said it took her network's cameraman 45 minutes to find 5 people who were interested in asking a question. So how do you get more people interested? I have a bigger Facebook page than my opponents combined...great answer
Mis-Quote: "Voting for her [Parker] because she is gay makes as much sense as not voting for her because she graduated from the Rice Country Club."
I haven't lived in Houston since 1980, although I've spent weeks at a stretch there a few times, for family reasons. Still kept our Austin address. Despite that, Bill White stands out. Having seen numerous Houston mayors come and go (and glad to see most of them go!), White is unique in my experience. I can't tell you just how many times I've had friends and relatives who are Republicans, Democrats, and "in between" praise the guy without my asking for their opinion. He's going to be hard to replace.
Peter Brown, and Gene Locke are basically the same candidate, but I am voting for Brown. I think Brown is more detailed when it comes to decentralizing the police department and getting some of these building projects that are already approved started quicker.. I don't think I could go wrong with either.
results coming in with 12% reporting parker is winning over locke followed by brown... and they're all separated by a couple thousand votes a piece.
parker up by more than 3,200 votes with 36% in. parker 30% locke 26% brown 24% morales 19% i wonder how brown's and morales' supporters would vote in a runoff?
