Oh, wow, you actually did it. You picked Mike freaking Sherman. Sorry, but this has failure and "settling" written all over it. Besides the fact that the guy has no college head coaching experience (um, recruiting?), he hasn't even been in the college scene for 11 years (when he coached at UCLA). Plus, although he was okay with Green Bay, he hasn't exactly lit the world on fire with the Texans. If I were an Aggie, I'd be pissed right about now. There are much better options available, so why not take the time to explore them? Sherman should have been the "safety school" choice, not the front runner. "Bop ba, this is the sound of settling..." - Death Cab for Cutie
After all the fuss about wanting Fran gone, this is a pretty lackluster result. Good luck running that pro-style offense in College!
i have no idea how this will turn out. i have no idea if he'll be a good coach. but i do think this was really quick. i guess if you KNOW who you want, you just hire them. nothing wrong with that necessarily. but i'm surprised they were so locked in when it seemed there were other choices. maybe they were made aware that others they hoped would be interested actually were not?
Remember how upset USC partisans were when Pete Carroll was hired? His hiring was blasted by former players and media alike. I think it turned out OK. Give Sherman a chance. If he has a couple of guys on his staff that can recruit, A&M will take a big step in the right direction because he can coach.
If Sherman doesn't leave ASAP and sure up recruiting I am going to be pissed. I say "if". I know he wont.
This reminds me of Rudy T always saying, no matter who was drafted, that "these are the guys we had targetted from the start - we are thrilled!" It means one of two things: (1) you're lying or (2) those guys were always available because you had them rated too high. This is bizarre. ALL of those would have been fantastic possibilities. To not even contact them is absurd. Two of them have had undefeated seasons in the last few years, one is likely on their way to the national title game this year, and one has turned a morbid program into a top 25 team. All are proven at the college level. Why would you not even pursue any of them?? I guess Sherman might be the next Pete Carroll. Or the next Bill Callahan. Who knows.
The one benefit that Sherman brings is that from what I understand, he is going to bring in a tremendous staff and that could make a difference. I've heard Sumlin is likely on his way to College Station. That would be HUGE.
Well, I don't follow A&M, but I got to think they jumped the gun a little... I will say that I think this will be a better choice than Fran, but only time will tell...
I thought the same thing, the guy was a good NFL coach but has nothing lately and to overlook some many other candidates is just too strange. I would have liked Tommy Tuberville especially what he has done in the last few years in the toughest conference. Wouldn't mind having him around an recruit some kids that would normally go for an SEC team. Oh well I hope this guy can turn things around and bring some respect back to the Aggies.
Ziggy- So whats the consensus from Aggie fans regarding the Sherman hiring? Sounds like most think y'all jumped the gun a little, not contacting Tuberville at a minimum seemed a little strange. I think it's a good hiring for the Ags, Sherman has credibility. But college hasn't been too kind to NFL coaches as of late. Texas has enough talent for A&M to get their share so I wouldn't be too worried about recruiting.
The average Ag seems pretty damn upset. But what else is new in sports? Its already assumed that Sherman can't recruit, doesn't know the college game, is too old, doesn't have flair, etc... At least expectations aren't so high. The majority wanted some young upcoming blood like; Peterson or Rodriguez while the others wouldn't settle for less than Spurrier or Cowher(ya I said Cowher- LOL right). So overall... Not ecstatic. His press conference turned a few frowns though.
