Not trying to pick on you or anything but TAMU out recruited Texas and LSU multiple times during Fran's tenure. Were definitely not at their caliber recruiting wise but still a force. We need someone who can utilize our talent first before we get more recruits. With Goodson, Lane, Bennett (maybe), and senior QB, there is plenty of potential for success.
I don't know of the official rankings of anything, but my understanding is that TAMU's "base" in east & south Texas is encroached on by LSU in east Texas and UT more in the Houston area and has struggled recently with all three programs (UT/OU/LSU) kind of peaking at the same time. According to this article: http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedconte.../stories/083007dnspocfbaggielede.51a19bb.html Here are the A&M Rivals.com rankings: That's why Franchione hit the recruiting trail so hard after being hired in late 2002. His first three recruiting classes ranked 10th, 13th and eighth, according to Rivals.com. Those classes produced multiple starters. A&M's recruiting class ranked 27th in 2006 and 43rd this year. But those classes yielded running back Mike Goodson and quarterback Jerrod Johnson. Freshmen Billy Chavis, a safety, and defensive lineman Von Miller could also be future mainstays. If that's the case, that's a definite downtrend that fits with excitement at the time of Franchione's hiring and then a lull as expections weren't reached.
I don't think anyone can say who the A&M coach will be until the bigger dominoes fall. 1. Michigan 2. LSU if Miles goes to Michigan 3. The Nebraska job is still probably more prestigious. 4. Auburn ... if the alumni get pissed about the rumors then Tuberville is sloppy seconds. I know who would put the fun back in College Station and has beaten Oklahoma to boot. In the history of college football, only one coach since 1900 has won 13 games in his first season at the helm of a Division I football team. That coach is Chris Petersen. Petersen, moving into his second season at the helm of the Bronco program, led Boise State to an undefeated 13-0 season, including a 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl last season. Petersen also became the first Boise State coach to earn national coach of the year honors winning the 2006 Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year award. The award was only one of a number of honors Petersen received. He was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award, a semifinalist for the George Munger Coach of the Year Award and was the Region 4 Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association. The perfect season ended with Boise State ranked fifth in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and sixth in the USA Today Coaches Poll, the highest rankings for the Broncos in school history. As Boise State’s ninth head coach in the 39-year history of Bronco football, Petersen not only led Boise State to an undefeated 13-0 season and its first ever BCS bowl game, but he also led the Broncos to their fifth straight Western Athletic Conference title.[/ http://www.broncosports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=9900&ATCLID=578844
I'd be happy with Tuberville or Peterson. If Sherman gets the job, I think I'll vomit. Although, I also thought Fran would bring us to a BCS game...I apparently am not a good judge of coaches.
I'm told that A&M will have a press conference tomorrow to introduce Mike Sherman as the next Head Coach.
nope just bein as obnoxious as everyone else seems to be in other threads...no need to mention names or topics... again who cares
Wow. Not even going to talk to Tuberville or Petersen, even though I'm pretty sure I just misspelled both of those names?
Good, his contrasting offensive philosophies were hurting the Texans. We can now become a WCO and not a WCO/Power running hybrid. This also means no more washed up Packers.
Not sure whether this is worthy of a new thread, but Arkansas and A&M are closing in on a multi-year deal to play an annual football game at the Cowboys new stadium once it is finished: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/112607dnspotamuark.3b62e4e4.html this is obviously going to make a lot of money for both schools, but I think it is huge for Arkansas as it could potentially open up a lot of recruiting in Texas that it lost when it left the SWC.
I'm puzzled but not surprised by the hire. Has the Texans offense been, uh, impressive to anyone? Is Sherman some kind of TX recruiting champ? Maybe he promised to have a partial blood transfusion with a border collie or something. Slightly vertical move for Sherman, slightly downward move for the Aggots. Time may prove me wrong.
Like I said in another thread, this is terrible news for Aggies everywhere. Sherman, IMO, is going to be an atrocious college HC. I hope I am wrong.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5328187.html Nov. 26, 2007, 12:48AM A&M taps Texans' Sherman as head coach Texans assistant the top choice from beginning By TERRANCE HARRIS Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M has scheduled a news conference for 11 a.m. today to introduce Mike Sherman as the school's new head football coach, replacing Dennis Franchione, who resigned after the Aggies beat archrival Texas on Friday. The Chronicle reported in Sunday's editions that Sherman, 52, had emerged as A&M's leading candidate and that an announcement could come as early as today. Sherman, who served as head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2000-05, has the head coaching experience A&M athletic director Billy Byrne has been seeking. Sherman was 59-43 during his time in Green Bay. He also served two stints at A&M as an assistant under former head coach R.C. Slocum, from 1989-93 and 1995-96. Sherman declined to discuss the opening Sunday with reporters following the Texans' loss at Cleveland, and his agent, Bob LaMonte, did not return repeated phone calls seeking comment. But people familiar with the situation from both sides said Sherman is the Aggies' choice. Sherman, who has been with the Texans the past two seasons, comes with the support of several big-time A&M boosters as well as former players such as Texans coach Gary Kubiak. Auburn's Tommy Tuberville, California's Jeff Tedford, Boise State's Chris Petersen and West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez were mentioned in connection with the A&M job, but indications are Sherman was A&M's top choice and really the only coach pursued. But Sherman is not expected to begin his job immediately. He likely will remain with the Texans until the NFL season is complete before returning to campus full-time. In the meantime, A&M announced Saturday that defensive coordinator Gary Darnell will serve as interim head coach and will coach the Aggies in their bowl.
Watch the last 23 seconds of this to think about how I feel about the signing. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RdNX7R1wvzE&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RdNX7R1wvzE&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
Funny thing is... If we hired Kubiak College Station would erupt with glee. But oh wait... He coaches the same #@#@#$ offense...
Sherman?!?!? Not a good selection....... Of course that means many more years of Tech dominance, so its actually a good selection for us. Sorry Aggies..... ya'll should have done an actual "national" search for a solid COLLEGE football coach.... Surprising that a decision has been made so quickly, especially since Fran was such a bust - doesnt make sense to me....
