Good stuff, thanks windandsea If everyone seems to agree that China is way behind the rest of the world when it comes to sports, then why don't they do something about it?
It also sheds some light on why Yao is still so "timid" in his playing style. It's at least partly because he absoultely lacks the street mentality. Yes, too much of it is a detriment to the game. But you need some of it to be competitive in the NBA.
After reading this (and thanks again, windandsea), perhaps the reason the Clippers waived Wang has become clear? I'll be wondering if this game will be broadcast in China, now that Wang has been "shown the door". I hope our Chinese friends let us know if it is. I don't think I've read a better explanation of the differences between Chinese and American basketball. And it made me sad to read about Hawkins. I wish there had been room for him on the team. (Morris and Braggs as well, for that matter) That's the breaks, I guess.
Thanks for a great read W&S. Seems like Yao's gonna need a BIG shoulders to carry the weight. The more we get to know him, the more I'll give him the respect that he deserves. I will be more patient with his development since we know it will be all good in the end.
Thanks windandsea for the great article. I didn't know that Peter Hessler knows so much about Basketball. He is the author of "River Town", a great book about 2 years that he spent living in a remote Chinese town in Sichuan working as a peace corp volunteer. He definitely has very good insights about China and Chinese society in general.
Yeah I've just read a couple interviews on Peter Hessler and he is a fine person. These travel writers are great individual and very open minded and understand the world better then most people out there. Prop to Peter Hessler for a great articles here and once again thanks W&S for finding this article.
man, a great article ruined by a cliched title, who's sick of hearing ming dynasty in every single headline? for the new yorker, you would think they would have more creativity in their office...
That was a joke from the show Seinfeld. I figured some would get it (and they did ) and some wouldn't.
