All I know is that in the games Beverly started, the primary PG that he usually guarded always scored over 15 points in all but one of the games.

    Westbrook: Game 2 = 29
    Jackson: Game 3 = 14, Game 4 = 18, Game 5 = 20, Game 6 = 17

Kid is good, normally he is better then Lin at staying with his guy but people hype up his skills to levels where truthfully they are not at. Maybe they will improve but for now, I'd say Beverly is a average defender that due to sample size of coming off the bench and his hustle plays which people confuse for being good defense rather actually stopping someone from scoring consistently.

    This one for Coachbadlee.

    -----------------------
And what did Lin do in Feb to April (34 games)? ~16pt, 6 assists in 32 min or approx 18/7 in 36min. He shot ~45% FG, ~39% 3pt, with about 2.8TOs per 36min.

Beverley in his 41 game sample (which is not much different to Lin's Feb to Apr sample of 34 games), averaged 11.6pts/6assists per 36min (and his assists were lower quality assists leading to less efficient shots than Lin), shooting 37.5% from 3s and 42% overall. All numbers worse than Lin's, while playing a higher % of his minutes without Harden and against back-ups.

For the 4 games when Harden was out with injury, Lin upped it to 22.6/7.4 in 36min with better shooting efficiency - 46% FG and 57% 3pt FG. For the 3 games with Harden out (after we signed him), Beverley averaged 10.7/4 per 36min and 33% overall FG and 43% 3ptFG.

11.8pts/2.8assists per 33 minutes as the PG in the playoffs wasn't too great either (although Lin didn't do too well either, very poor first game, a good 1st quarter in the second before injury)

Don't hype up Beverley as a starter, and we'll enjoy his production as a great change of pace, energy role playing back-up PG that plays above average defense and can fill in nicely for the starter at a great contract.

Same happened to people who criticized Lin. Remember the label LOH? When all is said and done, it is still just criticism.

Answer this for me Mike, was Lin consistent? No he wasn't. That is the only problem i have with Lin. I have said many times that Jeremy is still very valuable to this team, especially if he were to come off the bench. Jeremy wasn't hurt until close to the middle of game two. Why was Beverley put in to start? Why were the coaches all of a sudden in a playoff game, start to switch up? You can't say because Lin had a bad game because he has had them before in the season and there was never a change in the starting line up. Why is it that damn near the entire country saw what was going on and some fans of this team didn't. I guarantee you they were people sitting around waiting for Bev, a rookie, to screw up so they could jump on here and discredit him. As always, when a player does good or bad, i am going to say something about it. Just so happens that Lin being the starter has given us a lot to criticize.

Was Beverley consistent? Defensively yes, but then again, the foul trouble. Was he consistent on offense? Hell no. Did Beverley start game two? Yes. He played because Greg Smith got relegated to the bench, and we went small for variance. And your point is?

I still don't get it. Lin had a bad game 1. He was still playing PG in game 2 until his injury.

Unless you mean you're seeing things through your colored lens such that you think Greg Smith going to the bench and Patrick Beverley starting means Lin was the one demoted? You might as well blame Greg Smith's inability to defend or rotate on Ibaka on Lin.

Lin has been inconsistent, but pts/assists/FG%/3pt%,running a team, he was better than Beverley after he got through his injury. His last 41 game sample would easily be better than Beverley. And Beverley has had plenty of zero point, zero impact offensive games that were worse than anything Lin put up. This = inconsistency, right? So you mean inconsistency as a back-up => should get chance as starter to show consistency?

The fact is, Lin had one bad game in the playoffs. Beverley's bad games in the playoffs over a larger sample size was very average. Role-player back-up worthy.

But I like how you threw out Lin's Feb-Apr stats out the window (better than Beverley), focus on his inconsistency (Beverley even more inconsistent), and focus on Lin's game 1 small sample (Beverley was pretty average in a bigger sample), and think that Greg Smith going to the bench and the team going small was a demotion on Lin for the whole world to see except for certain fans on the team.

I'll repeat it again. I really like Beverley. As the back-up. Fills a role well. Makes up for the deficiency in Harden's defense. Bring energy and change of pace. One of Morey's best signing of the season (there were so many), and he's got potential to improve more. Could be one of the better back-up PGs in the league next year. And no one's looking for Beverley to fail. Shouldn't accuse people of that, just like you shouldn't be accused of wanting Lin to fail (hmm ...)

I find it amusing that you want to post something trashing Lin in a thread that isn't even about him. I find it more than amusing that you can say that with a straight face when you use a tag line score from the Rockets v Jazz game that Lin went for 14pts, 7 assists, 3 steals, 2 rbs and shot 100% from the field and the FT line and hit a three. The guy didnt miss a single shot the entire game! And he was a +25 for you believers of the +/- ratio for a single game sample.

Yes, you've convinced me that he can't play in the NBA.

Exactly. Hustle defense is appreciated and looks good on camera but if you don't stop people from scoring or give up plenty of open shots for every good steal or block you get, it's not good D.

Rarely do rookies play good defense. Rubio and Rondo are exception to the rule. In no way Bev is in their class. That's just the way it is.

How can you be a good defender when you are going up against at least 30 different PGs night on and night out? It takes at least a year or two to develop defensive skills. It takes time to know who you are guarding against, their tendencies, weaknesses, and their moves.

Opposition PGs have no respect for any rookie whom they are going up against. They love to demostrate their signature moves and make a fool out of rookies. It's their way of welcoming you to NBA.

Lin had a target on his back (Rondo and Felton) and now you can see most of PG's respect his defense. He earned his spot.

Bev hasn't earned his respect yet. Other PG's will expose his weakness in his defense. It's part of growing pain if you have rookies in your lineup.

Cstyle42 is the prime example out there of posters that believe Rockets Fan and Jeremy Lin Fan MUST BE MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVELY, even when the data doesn't suggest so.

    Good pick up

My bad... he said Lin shouldn't be starting for any NBA team. That being said, his own tag line discredits him.

Jeremy Lin should be groomed to be a sixth man. I want to see the rockets win a championship not just be good entertaining team. There has been lots of players that have had a good game or good group of great games. The one positive thing is Lin is young, has room to grow and has a future. I don't like that he is easily injury prone and looks out of place on the basketball court against elite defenses. The playoffs really slapped him in the face and raises red flags. So at this point I look at Lin as a great sixth man as he develops his game more. Saying Beverley is suspect on D affects Jeremy Lin automatically as far as conversation goes because so many people inwardly want him to start on this garm when Beverley has clearly proven he should be starting.

Firstly... why are we talking about Lin in a thread about Beverley's defense? Can't we evaluate/discuss his defense on its own merits?

Secondly - As per Mike_lu's post in another thread : 18/7 per 36 min over a 2.5 mths stretch after injury healed, going 44/39 is not good to be a starting NBA PG?

And that's with Lin playing as SG half the time next to a very ball dominant Harden.

As for Beverly - It's the Toney Douglas syndrome all over again. All most any NBA bench player can go out there and dance around like a hyperactive chicken for twenty minutes and people who have never played a full basketball game in their lives will think he is a good defender. We've saw what happens time and time again when he tries that for longer stretches.

It's not sustainable, it causes fouls and from what I've seen this season he's been regularly lit up by opposition point guards, ESPECIALLY starting PG's when he's been put on them for his 'defensive prowess.'

I think he's a decent defender and he's a good spark of the bench and a great find by Morey to fill a need for the Rockets. I don't mind his minutes being upped somewhat next season to see what he can do with them, but the ignorance and trollery about this subject is just baffling.

Imo rockets fans should be rockets fans and want what's best for the team as a whole. If somebody is a Lin only fan then okay... if you disagree with any of Lin's criticism then we'll have to agree to disagree. Nobody is perfect on this team i just feel if Lin would have played with half the heart, toughness and confidence beverley did Lin would be a top point guard in this league.

Consistency? Beverley's defense has been anything but consistent. Guy plays good D for a few minutes and then gives up huge shots that hurt us. Guy gets a steal and then lets Jackson blow by him repeatedly the next few times down the court. Guy commits crazy dumb fouls and can't stay on the floor, forcing an injured Lin to have to come into the game. But you seem to not be bothered by Bev's inconsistent play.

Lin's first full season was inconsistent to an extent but then again, so were Rondo and Parkers. In fact, Rondo and Parker were still inconsistent into their full second season. Heck, Rondo was still inconsistent in his third season. It's part of being a young PG in the NBA.

Correct and Lin was a big part of why we blew out the Jazz and didn't miss a shot the entire game. Yet you said he shouldn't start for any NBA team? That's proving that your statement isn't even close to being true.

Once again, I guess people can't discuss Beverley without bringing in Lin. Playing in a game when you can't even lift up your arm without excruciating pain? Having to bite down on a mouthguard the entire time your sitting on the bench due to pain? That sounds like heart and toughness there.

Confidence... that's another story. Lin needs to build up more confidence and even Harden said he doesn't want Lin deferring so much.

However, confidence is also what Beverley probably has too much of and why he thinks he can make every steal and every block every time instead of playing solid D. End result much of the time- he gets burned or picks up stupid fouls.
