again, you guys are picking out a single line and ignoring the big picture. the international concern for human rights only arose after WW2 and was primarily a response to the Holocaust and other WW2 atrocities. he's merely alluding to this fact. just WHERE do you see him advocating persecution of jews? are you guys "reading between the lines" again? right now, israel IS the enemy of the world. one U.N. vote and condemnation after another reaffirms this fact. america is the ONLY country supporting its policies (we actually sponsor it as well). mahathir is merely alluding to this fact. and when he fails to distinguish between jews worldwide and israel as a nation, he is not just making common mistake (one i see many of you making between muslims worldwide and certain extremist islamic states), but he is also influenced by the lack of any effective jewish voices and efforts to change israeli policies. why does he call us mercenaries for israel (besides the fact that sharon himself said so)? maybe it's because we consistently fail to support the most mundane resolutions condemning israel's most egregious violations? i personally find it sad that you guys are blowing mahathir off like he's some raving lunatic. do you even know you who he is and what he has done to win so much respect? And as an advocate of the Muslim community, i find what he says to be extremely mild and rational. he's not advocating violence, he's not supporting terrorism, he's not a fundamentalist cleric, but what he says does i believe reflect the views of many moderate muslims out there. and if we as americans find deep, unreconciliable differences with him, then i think america is going to be on a unavoidable collision course with the arab states and the islamic world at large. right now, our only possible rival superpower, china, is also in islam's bad books (for their treatment of muslim uighurs). but if one day, China reverses her policies, herein lies the basis for an alliance which can cause america much mischief. our other potential rivals russia and the european union have long been supportive of the arab states, and if they ever get their act together... can you say oil embargo? energy crisis? right now, we are the world's lone superpower. we have the power to change things almost any way we see fit in the middle east. if we do not take this golden opportunity to implement a viable long-term solution to the palestinian issue, amicable to all parties and promoting the ideals of democracy, human rights, prosperity, and harmony, then in 20 years time, someone else will kick us out of there and impose their own, probably considerably more violent, solution. and i see some incredibly prejudiced comments in here against arabs and muslims too, to which i don't care to respond. have you guys ever met muslims? how many arabs do you know? again, i implore you as responsible americans to be more reflective, forward-looking, tolerant, understanding, and cosmopolitan in your worldviews. the concerns of the global muslim community may be hard to stomach (with us depicted as villains and lackeys, rather then our traditional role as heros), but as evidenced in 9-11 and iraq, in our present day and age, their concerns all too soon becomes our concerns as well.

What is that if not blatant anti-semitism? What's hard to stomch is vicious anti-semitism. Plenty of people criticize plenty of Israel's actions, especially under Sharon. And plenty of people can and do differentiate between peaceful followers of Islam, and the fanatics who blow themselves up and call for the end of Israel. I don't believe that Islam is a "religion of violence"; that doesn't mean I don't absolutely condemn the targeting of civilians by suicide bombers or murder in the name of God/Allah. It's pretty condescending to call for tolerance, understanding, and respect, and at the same tacitly accept the anti-semitism inherent in the speech....
Yes, Israel is every bit a rogue state like North Korea and Hussein Iraq, if not worse. You may don't see it, but 100 other non-muslim nations see it just like the 50 muslim states. North Korea is guilty of Human Rights Violations, as is Israel. Of course Israel is only guilty if you consider that they do it to a second class group of citizens, which they don't consider equal anyway. Who is better? North Korea tries to spy on the US. The US has convicted Israeli spies in prison. The US Gives Israel secret technology, then we pay them not to sell it to China. What Great friends of the US!! We have international boycotts based on our relationship with them that adversely affects our economy. HEY! At least North Korea doesn't cost us BILLIONS OF DOLLARS of support annually as well as free weapons and other support. I'm sick of my tax dollars going to those that don't support the system in the US, without us giving Israel billions to subsidize their military control over settlements in which they use Apartheid policies.
