I get up at seven, YEAH! And go to work at nine Ain't no time for living, yeah I'm working all the time Well, they're Canadian, so I guess we have to give them credit for putting together complete sentences.
I'm not saying their music doesn't sell...I'm not saying it isn't popular. I'm saying that their career was all but over without the help of MTV. They capitalized big time on the music video. I just don't find their music to be particularly appealing or unique...
you certainly know more about writing music than I do!!! But why do you say DMB is overrated as songwriters?? By the way...been listening to a good deal of Ben Folds lately...his stuff gets better every time I listen to it.
Creed is awesome. I never really understood all the Creed hating. Just don't get it. DMB is probably my favorite band of all time. Jeff, how are they overrated as songwriters? My pick for most overrated is Radiohead. Never have I seen a more mediocre band get the respect they do.
To me, it is a combination of two things that demonstrate credibility as a songwriter. 1. Critical & peer respect. Generally within the industry, DMB is considered a great BAND and great musicians, but not really great as songwriters. They don't generate albums full of great compositions as much as they create albums of great music. There is a significant difference. 2. Long-term success. This doesn't mean popularity. Robert Earl Keen is considered a great songwriter and has never had a #1 hit. It is mostly about being consistent and somewhat prolific. You don't have to meet both of these requirements to be a great songwriter, but you have to nail at least one. DMB is a throwback to AOR radio. They put together really good CD's full of music, but there aren't really single-quality releases on every record. There are lots of songwriters I don't care for who I still recognize as great writers. I like listening to DMB and they are tremendous musicians but they don't rank terribly high on the great songwriter list.
Typical Situation is a well written song. Many others too. I'd say most of the songs on Under The Table and Dreaming are all well composed, but that's the only album I've ever heard by them. All those bands have good songs and they all have bad ones, too. If you call them over-rated you're probably under-rating them and vice-versa. It's all opinion anyhow. Although I don't listen to a lot of these bands, I can appreciate each style and their creative work. I like all kinds of music, though, except if it has a bad message for the kids.
I guess I could say New Kids On The Block were overrated, but then again, if I was a 10 year-old girl I'd probably think they were the best thing since beach-wear Barbie.
When I was 10 years old I listened to Quiet Riot, Michael Jackson, The Eagles and Hank Williams Jr. and Madonna. Heck, I guess I still like some of that stuff. Then again I like Bob Marley, Willie Nelson, Rage Against The Machine and Shakira. I guess there's just nothing I don't like. What's my problem? I like Barry Manilow, Nirvana, Jewel, Steel Pulse, Neil Diamond, Pearl Jam and Miles Davis. I like Ricky Martin, Sinead O'Conner, Rush, Elvis, Bing Crosby, Brother Iz, Los Tigres Del Norte, Soundgarden and Robert Earl Keen. I like Tears For Fears, Krokus, Pink Floyd and Janis Joplin. Merle Haggard, Shania Twain, Dream Theater and Dave Matthews. Aeromsith, U2, Police, Big Daddy Kane, Skid Rowe, and Frank Sinatra. Beethoven, Bach and Led Zeppelin.
THE BEATLES I don't care how influential or popular they were, to be as highly rated as they are, everyone should like them. As I don't like them, and I know others who don't as well, they MUST be overrated.
Good examle to use. DMB's best songs, without question, were on Under the Table and Dreaming. I got the sense that, song-wise, they kinda shot their wad with that record. I feel like it may not be their best album, musically, but it is definitely the best one when it comes to composition.
U2 may be overplayed, but I wouldn't say they are overrated. I would definitely say that Bono is one of the greatest rock vocalists ever. The Edge's guitar-playing is...well, it's not the greatest ever, but I wouldn't say it's terrible either. But, you can't be blamed for simply not liking someone's music. Overrated is totally based on personal bias. I don't particularly like Creed, Blink 182, etc..., but I definitely do not hate them. The whole "I hate them because they are popular among teens/young adults, but won't say it" is very prevalent on this board.
Wait....were one of you saying Neil Peart is overrated as a songwriter? . Unbelievable. I hope I misread that.
