Somehow I forgot about this thread till reminded by bobrek. I think the team showed some promise. I am proud of the way they fought back after getting down by 14-0, within the first 5 minutes or whatever to wind up losing by only 8. The one penalty by Jeffcoat was the killer. Much better than quitting during the UCLA game. As far as Gilbert, I don't know. We are used to more mobile quarterbacks, so he is a disappointment there. The receivers certainly are not Quan Cosby or Shipley when it come to hanging on to the ball. I certainly agree that DJ Monroe not playing more was a mystery. I expect to win against Nebraska as I think we are on an uptick.
Well we might beat Baylor next week, if we get lucky. Very disappointing yesterday vs Iowa State. Iowa State gets beat 52-0 by Oklahoma and the next week beats UT at home. I don't know what to think as I am sort of a new football fan. Gilbert is a first year quarterback. Do guys look this bad and then get it together later? He is big and strong and throws very hard, but there is more than that to being a quarterback. Leadership etc. Gilbert is not very quick of foot, though his speed is ok once he gets going. This makes it tough on the offensive line, which does not seem very good anyway. We sure don't have Quan Cosby and Shipley, guys with great hands in the receiver corp. On another board some one said they are all great sprinters, but not quick in the first 10 steps so it makes it tough to do a short passing game. Perhaps they will rebound and crush Baylor convincingly. Who knows?
Both Line and QB are young and inexperienced, which means they won't play consistently most often. They make mistakes especially when under pressure (from sackers, score, etc). Longhorns have had issues with downfield runners it seems like. ISU uses a downfield RB, UCLA uses it in the pistol, and OU has the prostyle which runs to pass. Nebraska would have won if not for dropped passes, but woulda-coulda-shoudla, and the Horns really did a good job containing Martinez who is their offense. Baylor's Griffin is similar in many regards. He is bigger and is a better thrower, but UT should easily be able to contain him. However, they need to clean up the offensive mistakes, and some help on special teams would get them back to what they were just a few years ago there. Baylor's defense is not good though, so UT better be able to score some points.
