Quick question, all this swap thing kinda confuses me.

Let's say the Rockets end up with a worst record than the Knicks, do the Knicks have the option to swap with the Rockets for the higher pick, or are the Rockets the only one's who have the option to swap picks?

    Only our choice.

Th knicks could sneak into the playoffs in the lousy east, which would make the option meaningless.

We can swap after the lottery right? I would hate to switch with the Knicks only for them to end up with the 2nd or 3rd pick in the draft that we would have won.

If it's our option after the lottery then essentially it greatly increases our chances of landing in the top 2-3 since both of the teams will likely be in the lottery.

Yes. Since it is only #1 protected, that means we can take the Knicks pick if they end up #2 or #3, which are determined by the lottery, not just the records.

Yes. Which means that if both the Knicks and the Rockets are in the lottery, it's still a great thing for us because they might hit the #2 or #3 and we don't. In that situation, we can swap.

So in essence, it's not just about the Knicks having a better seed than us. There's also the added % of getting into the top 2-3 if both team sucks ass.
The swap is beneficial for us provided the Knicks don't backdoor into the playoffs. It may end up not matter if we end up with the higher pick. But every lottery ball helps.

If both teams don't get into the playoffs, then we won't know which pick is higher until after the lottery is drawn.

Do the Rockets have a certain number of years to exercise the swap, is that correct?

No - 2011 only. If it they get the #1 then we lose the swap option permanently. Otherwise our choice after the true lottery pick order is settled.

Knicks are up to 7th in the conference somehow, if they finish .500 they're probably in the playoffs.

Knicks: 7th seed (second place in division, 4 game win streak)
Rockets: 14th seed (third worst record in the entire NBA, 4 game losing streak)

Current value of draft pick swap: WORTHLESS

Analysis: Right now it looks like Donnie Walsh may get the last laugh. After a rough patch, the Knicks are surging and newly acquired franchise player Amare Stoudemire is a large part of that. He's posting excellent performance in all statistical categories, but of note are some new facets of his game that are emerging. First, his scorching 55.6% shooting from downtown places him among the league leaders, demonstrating excellent range for a power forward. Second, his career high assist numbers cast him in the light of a true team player adept at creating for others. You will all recall that our esteemed GM passed on trading for Amare because the price of Battier and others was too high.

BBS pundits are itching to call it a season after two months.

Let's remember a LOT can happen before April.

I have caught several Knick games this season. They are on a 4 game streak but they have been winning against some really crappy teams. It's not that the Knicks are better than the Rockets, it's just that the east has some really bad teams.

On Amare, he hasn't been really good, there was a streak where he was getting outplayed by other forwards on a nighly basis, he's still not a good rebounder or a good defender.

Yep like what the Pacers did last season, where their were in position for a top 5 pick then all of a sudden they went on a 7 game winning streak at the end of the season.

Not its cuz Phoenix wanted to do the trade with Amare NOT taking a physical. Or maybe the GM wanted to hold onto BRIAN COOK who was also part of the rumored deal.

That trade mighta made Phoenix better giving them Scola and our own draft picks. Rockets woulda been a little better with less draft picks, while also making the direct competition better. At least the Knicks are out East.

I don't know if it's really worth crying over spilt limk with Amare. I still think that David Lee is a better player (although injuries have hampered him thisseason so far).

The reason why the Knick are doing well isn't because of Amare, it's because of Raymond Felton. They actually made great moves for once. Felton is the best pure PG they've had in maybe 15 years. Starbury wasn't a pure PG , so I can't count him.

The knicks also made a great move in the GS trade. Now of course that nullifies the David Lee vs Amare argument because they needed to trade D Lee to get all those young assets.

The Knicks will be in lottery contention again after January. 4 game winning streak with 2 games against the Bobcats. meh. Let's see them stay above 0.450, when their schedule gets tougher from the middle of December to February. They have a tough stretch against teams with teams that are better than 0.500.

Rockets: 10th seed (4 game losing streak)

Analysis: Stoudemire continues to beast, anchoring the #1 ranked offense in the NBA. Many pundits are mentioning him as the early favorite to win the MVP award. This historic season could have occurred in Rocket red, but our esteemed GM wisely decided that Luis "no defense" Scola and Shane "expiring contract" Battier were too princely a sum for the best 4 in the NBA.
