Not really. It was part of a trade package, just like Jordan Hill, Kevin Martin, or the Knicks' 2012 first round pick was. The Knicks didn't kick that in out of the goodness of their hearts. I don't blame Morey for making a creative move, that had very high potential upside. At the end of the day, it's just like purchasing an option that ultimately goes unexercised. With the power of hindsight, maybe we would have done it differently (e.g., asked for a 2nd round pick instead), but it doesn't mean it was a bad decision at the time.
Quoted for truth. Because they're in the LEast they won't miss the playoffs, but if we make the playoffs I'd be almost certain that we'll have a better record than them. An injury to Stoudemire early in the season probably sent them to the lottery
How? It's possible we'll have a better record than them - true. But they'll make the playoffs. We probably won't. In which case, we'll be in the lottery and they won't.
He's saying if the Rockets make the playoffs, then they would have a lower pick than the Knicks, so the swap could work then.
Knicks are about to lose again for a 35-34(0.507) record. Rockets have a 36-34(0.514) record for a 1/2 game lead. Rockets' pick is still higher and they are still 2 games behind Memphis and a 1/2 game behind Utah for the 8th seed.
It's kind of ironic that in order for there to be a chance for a swap, we need to pray for NY to beat the Grizzlies next game.
This pretty much explains it. Here are the possible scenarios, assuming the Knicks make the playoffs, which is, in my opinion, set in stone: Rockets make the playoffs - Rockets use the swap Rockets miss the playoffs - Rockets don't/can't use the swap It's pretty much that simple. If we make the playoffs our record is almost guaranteed to be better than theirs and there is no way Indiana catches NY. The way things are going, if we make the playoffs, it looks like we would end up with the 18th pick. So...by swapping we could move up 2 spots. 1-14 are lottery picks. 15) Indiana 16) NY 17) Philadelphia 18) Houston 19) New Orleans 20) Portland/Atlanta The only way this changes is if someone passes NY, which has basically no chance of happening. Man, what I'd give for that to happen though. To make the playoffs and be in the lottery, I'd definitely call this a super successful season. Who would have ever thought this when Yao went down? Even still, I'm not going to complain if we make the playoffs and are able to move up at all, even if it turns out to be just 1 pick (that means we made the 7th seed! Of course, it also means we play the Lakers instead of the Spurs). Pugs
The swap is almost certain right now. NY record likely would be 40-42 or 41-41, and the rockets would be a record of 44-38. The worst record for the rockets could be 42-40, but I do not think NY can even get this. The swap of the draft with NY would be the best thing I would like to see in this year NBA.
Except for that pesky part about the Rockets currently being 2 games out of the 8-seed in the West. Also, there is no guarantee that the Knicks don't win all of their remaining games, or at least enough of them to finish with a better record than the Rockets. Hell, I'd be fine NOT getting the swap picks with New York. I'd be satisfied just making the damn playoffs! (But swapping up in the draft would be nice.)
It's far from almost certain. The Rockets have to make the playoffs for the switch to be a viable option.
We'll probably finish with a better record than New York, but that doesn't necessarily mean we can for sure swap picks with them. In a perfect world (for us), we and the Suns (as the 8th seed) make it in the playoffs, we swap picks with the Knicks for the 16th pick and get the Suns pick which would probably be the 19th pick.
BimaThug, Niaperzly, Convictedstupid: I do not know the damn rule that the Rockets have to make the playoffs to make the swap, which must be a agreement between the Rockets and Knicks. I thought that it is up to the Rockets to make a swap if NY has a bad record. As for a better record for NY, BimaThug, they have a much tough schedule, and they do not like play the damn defense, it is very hard for them to win more than seven games in the next 12 if you look at the teams they are going to play, but still NY will be in the playoffs in the East. Unfortunately I am not very confident that the rockets can make the playoffs in the West.
This is why it's so grossly unfair. Crappy teams make the playoffs in the East while good teams in the West miss out. If NY was in the West, they'd be a lottery team. If the Rockets were in the East, they'd be a 5th seed.
