Canada only has that expensive to refine oil sands. Why would we want to invade them.

    Sincerely,

Sishir, don't you realize that Bush and gang have as one of their major foreign policy goals to discredit the UN so that it is no obstacle to US goals of whatever type. Don't forget Bolton; threats to defund and all the statements they make about the uselessness of the UN, especially when they can't get their way.

You are not engaging in your usual clear thinking. I suspect you have a bias against the UN.

If you look at the recent history of the UN though its already proved that its ineffectual. Consider the situations with Rwanda where the UN was paralyzed and undercut their own peacekeeping efforts or Bosnia and Kosovo where a UNSC resolution couldn't get passed so the Clinton Admin and NATO just went ahead and acted without going through the UN. The UN is a great idea in principle but has proven terrible in execution many times and for the most part is a discussion forum.

The problems with it are many fold but one is that the permanent UNSC members each get a veto so any one of them on their own can kill a resolution even if 99% of the UN as a whole supports it. For instance resolutions on Israel. At the same time as Iraq, Kosovo, Chechnya, Lebanon and countless other examples have shown that the UN is largely powerless to stop aggressive invasions or wars what the UN was meant to do in the first place. This is still not forgetting the long record of waste and mismanagement in the UN bureacracy.

While the Bush Admin made the UN look bad the the UN already looked weak even without the Bush Admin. Going to the UN though just made things look worse for all parties included.

Clear thinking is in the eye of the beholder and you can judge for yourself whether the UN's record is deserving of my criticism as far as biases though I've never denied that I do have biases. In the case of the UN I will admit a critical bias but I don't think it is unfounded.
